Folks,It's time once again for the South Shore Model Railway Club's Annual Spring Train Show and Open House this coming weekend! www.ssmrc.org
Our club, est. 1938, is one of the largest & oldest HO train clubs around, with one of the finest club buildings in the USA. The club is located in Bare Cove Park in Hingham, MA, which is a retired U.S. Navy Ammuntion Depot. It occupies a 50' x 200' above-ground bunker. The layout is approx. 1/3rd completed, and will eventually be over 6300 sq. ft. The rest of the building is an office, library, meeting room, 2 bathrooms, a wood shop, a model shop and storage rooms. We have almost 70 members, and we're always on the lookout for more.
In the Spring, we rent the nearby South Shore Country Club which is diagonally across the street from the park entrance. We have dealer tables set up in the Country Club, and we usually have around 80 dealer tables for the last several years.
We are also located across the street from the new West Hingham Commuter Rail Station on the MBTA. Be advised it's about a 3/4 to 1 mile walk from the Station to the railroad club.
We will be selling soda, coffee, candy and snacks at the club.

If you want to find me, look for the guy with the full black beard (as seen on the website). I'll probably be up in the dispatcher's tower or walking around. This is also the club of MR Forum member "bogp40", so if you see a B&O passenger train or a Chessie coal drag, it's probably Bob. If you see any New Haven RR stuff, it's probably mine!

I won't be able to come this time, but I did go in October. I managed to hitch a ride into Boston with my parents, then took the train to West Hingham Station. The walk was all on paved roads and very easy to follow. It's basically the last building; stop where you see all the cars parked!
I saw both of you (although I didn't get a chance to say hello) at the show. If you saw a teenager taking video of the trains (one of the members asked if I was doing a school project!) that was me...

I will be there in the country club with my sand and gravel modules. I have a new module with a scale house on it and small yard this year.
Is it my understanding that all the dealers will be in the country club this year? That's probably a good idea. It was really congested sometimes at the club house.

Pete, Not all the dealers. Some of the regulars just like to be situated in the club itself. Eventualy, as the layout grows, we will need all dealers elsewhere. Still have a good chunk of real estate within the building to use.

Um, actually Bob, all the dealers will be in the Country Club this year. I think there's supposed to be a modular layout or two in the club, but all model railroading retail stuff (other than our White Elephant Table) will be at the golf club.
There's two reasons: 1). Because the dealers like to be all in one place if possible. 2). So there's no excuse not to expand the layout.
See? This is what happens when you aren't at the meetings...

I'm still skiing this time of year, but I encourage anyone else that can make it to attend. This is a great example of a large club layout, with great scenery and long runs. It's still growing and improving, so I'm sure that my next trip will be just as interesting as the last.

Mr B, was great to see you last time. Too bad you can't make it. Quite a bit of new trackwork up and running. Not as much in the scenery dept. Well there's always the fall open house Oct 24-25.
Pete,I think the South Shore Hi-Railers are setting up in the club itself. These are tinplaters that have the large Hell Gate Bridge set up as several modules. I just hope I can deal with the noise...

Had a good time! Didnt get a chance to see you Paul. Club layout looks good. Seems to run great. Our layout had some radio issues and could have had a more stable floor under it but other than that it was a great show.

Thanks to some fancy footwork on the part of moi, I managed to dredge up an ol' buddy of mine to go to the show of yours---and he's coming back to visit me and give me a wack of N scale stuff he fell over-----------------------------now, when are your next shows? That way I MIGHT be able to SEE your clubs layouts!! Mumble grumble---

Was an excellent show. The layout performed great with only minor glitches and power troubles. The majority of the power issues are always too many sound decoders w/ the inrush at power up. Most yards and staging can have about a dozen sound equiped locos during a show. The typical dirty track popped up but a few passes w/ a track cleaning car solves that.
No crashes, just a couple minor OOPs here and there.
The viewing public enjoyed seeing the layout and the trains run. Love to see all those wide eyed little ones waiting for the next train to come into view. Of course "Thomas", Percy and all their friends are always a big hit.
The "O" guage "High Railers" layout was a great attraction for the little guys also. The low benchwork allows them great viewing. The noise of these things screaming around in circles at 200MPH wasn't that bad and we don't allow smoke units in the club. That smoke casts a film of slim on everything.
The dealers and 2 portalble HO layouts were across the street in the So.Shore country club, The MBTA commuter seemed like part of the show also, It runs just adjacent to the entrance. You had to cross the tracks to get between the ywo sites. Some 1:1 scale sounds and sights.
So far all seemed to have a great time, I know I did.
Maybe Paul3 can post pics, saw him w/ a camera throughout the day. When not dispatching of coarse!!! We always try to work him like a dog ROL.
