Passenger trains serving Fort Dix, NJ in 1960s
Posted by ripvanwnkl on Saturday, February 28, 2009 10:15 AM

I'm interested modeling the above but have not yet been successful in finding a particular class 1 or equivalent railroad of that era which served the Ft Dix area.  Any suggestions?

Thanks,

IIRC, Fort Dix was served by the New York and Long Branch, a joint PRR - CNJ operation that hosted passenger trains from both railroads.

The NY&LB was a 'last stand of the K-4' railfanning destination when I was a high schooler, about a decade earlier than the time you asked about.

I did basic & advanced there in '64-'65, but I'll be darned if I ever saw a loco or caboose - just box cars.  Loaded tanks and PC's on flats at Ft Riles KS - UP flats.  Sorry I can't help more.Blush

IIRC, both the PRR and the CNJ served Fort Dix.  The 'New York & Long Branch' as a joint PRR-CNJ operation down the sea shore to Bay Head Jct.  There used to be a line from Bay Head to the Englishtown area, but it was gone by 1970 when I was at Fort Monmouth for a year.

When I was sent to Ft. Monmouth in '67 we were told to leave the train at Red Bank and call for transportation to Ft. Monnouth from there.

That line was the Pemberton & Hightstown aka Union Transportation Co. The P&H was eventually taken over by the PRR but was not part of the New York & Long Branch line. The NY&LB terminated and still actually does under the NJ transit system in Bayhead. Which is on he other side of the state (east side).
Conrail serviced the line until 1981, using the old PRR trackage rights. The line was completely abandoned in 1984

If your modeling the 1960's I would say the power most likely would have been FA units as the last of the K4's stopped running in I believe 1959.  I drive past what used to be the P&H line almost everyday there are loads of people here including the ones who live next to the old ROW that don't even know a railroad once thundered right pass their front yard.I have memories of RS 2 or 3' and F units pulling up to one of our family business when I was a kid. I'll rummage through some of the old photo albums if I find pics I'll be sure to post them.

Just my 2 cents worth, I spent the rest on trains. If you choked a Smurf what color would he turn?

Thanks to all for replies and info.  My dad was career Army infantry and Fort Dix was his last duty station from 1965 to 1968 when he retired with 30 years service as a veteran of WW II, Korean War, and Vietnam War.  I was a college student and new Air Force lieutenant then and remember a lot of trains in the Fort Dix environs when I visited Mom and Dad there.
