In all fairness we should specify our price parameters.

In my case, being cost effective, conservative and getting"the best bang for the buck" thanks Gordon, I own four A-B sets, P1K F3s. Cheapest power on my layout and in
a heart beat, I would buy a set again.

There's different opinions on what are the "best" locomotives.
I myself have a lot of Athearn "Blue Box" locomotives. While they are not quiet nor as detailed as Kato, Atlas, Proto or even Athearn RTR, I still find they are the best bang for the buck.

I favor the Atlas, it's a first class -professional-creditable company all the way.

Steamers, depends on $$$.$$ You can pay up to $600.00

If you want the best of the best locomotives in HO or N then the only choice is Atlas. The second best is theP2K line of locomotives..

In HO, it's Kato, with new Atlas releases being a close second. But my experience has all been with diesels.

Proto2000 locos look great, run okay when new, but seem to develop power pickup issues with age. Also, P2K units tend to have some slop in the worm gears which will cause them to buck going downhill. A few brass washer shims will fix that, though.

Modern Athearn locos actually run pretty well, too, in my experience. Older brass locos run very poorly, with the newer stuff (with can motors) running much better.

Hope that helps!
