Buying A Digital Camera for Layout Photography

Because of the greater depth of field than a 35mm cam, Digi cams are a good choice for model photography. Go for as many megapixals as you can afford. Telephoto feature is not important for model photography. Go for a camera that can be operated manually. At least go for one that you can operate in aperture priority mode so that you can close the lens down to min aperture for good depth of field. Generally built in flash is inadaequate for model photography so photofloods are good.Camera models are constantly changing ( I read somewhere that Sony bring a new model out every 24 days), so good value can be often obtained by buying a recently superceded model.

Looking in my favorite bookstore today, it also looks like several 8MP ZLR cameras are coming out. Sony-Nokon-Canon shootout at about $900. Watch the price of 5MP units crash! One of them might get your feet wet as a point & shoot. Should be plenty good enough for webshots!
Another subject is the speed of writing the picture to the chip. Some cameras have shutter delay & take a long time to store the photo. This will be important if you try any action photos. The train may be around the bend before you can get in a shot!
For depth of field questions don't forget that Nscale models tend to be business card size. Yes, you can get clear photos of the boxcar ends!
