Posted by Ngoody on Saturday, January 24, 2009 11:00 AM

How many feet of N scale track will a shaker bottle of fine ballast (Woodland Scenic) do approx?  Also how does this compare to real rock ballast. ie how many feet can one expect froma pound of ballast.

thanks

you'll get a lot of track ballasted with one bottle of the woodland scenics ballast but i cannot give you an exact amount. i've ballasted about 20' on my layout and still have more than 3/4 bottle left. i believe the ballast is cheaper if you buy it by the bag instead of the shaker. real ballast is about 1' to 2' under the ties for tamping and drainage. this area is taken up by the cork roadbed on our layouts and just a thin layer of ballast is needed to cover the cork..
