Chrome...No more slow forum!
Posted by loathar on Saturday, January 10, 2009 12:27 AM
I've been using IE 7 with the new forum software and it's been, well...um...It sucked to blunt. Took forever for pages to load. Lots of crashes and yellow "timed out" screens. I downloaded Google CHROME browser tonight after reading glowing reviews about it. All I can say is THIS ROCKS!!! The forum is 10 times faster. Everything loads in a flash! Even pic intense WPF loads in no time flat! Youtube and flash movies play and look like DivX videos. No more video stuttering. (had to download an Adobe plug in when prompted for the video) It even has a built in spell check as you type feature. If your having problems like I was, you might want to check it out. It has a lot of really cool features. Makes surfing MUCH more enjoyable! Good job Google!

I've been using IE 7

Yup, that would have been your problem alright.

Firefox works well too.

Well I gave it a try, and WOW!!! It is alot faster. The only thing it can't figure out is, where is the menu for my websites? I have to type in the webpage I want. Is there not a way to not have to keep typing it in?

I have IE7, and the forum bit by bit has gotten faster.  About 3 weeks ago I went from Verizon HS DSL to IO cable modem - the forum is now as fast as any other sites I visit - not 1/2 speed as the DSL. Smile

Yeah, fast is nice, but some very basic features are missing in Chrome, i.e. being able to autofill credit card information when shopping, send link via email, etc.

Hi
Are you saying that there is no favorites option on crome? I downloaded it but have not installed it yet.

Robby P.
Is there not a way to not have to keep typing it in?
Thanks.

Look under bookmarks---it is all there----it's just another learning curve I think the browser just compacted favorites with bookmarks hence the confusion---all I do is on upper right hand is the icon for bookmarks click that it should open up a list with all the stuff---MIND if you did not import any of your things from IE7 then there may be issues---if you haven't done this then you could open it back up and import the items you want---

I downloaded the Firefox a month ago and am very pleased with the way it operates. I had IE7 and downloaded the IE8 Beta version, it was slow as a snail with the same crashes and problem I had with IE7.

I really prefer the Firefox browser. I tried the Google Chrome and didn't like it. The only bookmark settings I could find either splatter the bookmarks all over the top of the page or I'd have to go hunting for the bookmark bar. I couldn't get my scroll lock to work with Chrome either.

I also use Firefox and am very pleased with it.

IE sucks and has more problems than Bayer has aspirin .
Firefox is also much more secure than IE.

One other problem most of you probably don't even know about or consider is
how much unwanted software that you don't even know about is wrapped up in
in the Chrome broswer that will eventually do harm to your operating system or
allow spy software to invade your system?

I use firefox 3 with some additional add ons. I right click and block ad images, ad block and scripts. I can "Fly" through the forum pages flipping bothways around as fast as I can think. With just posts to look at, nothing else.

Now with the explorer. Well it's really bad. But when there is nothing pressing for time, I suck it up and grind through it.

If I really wanted to gut the forums down to nothing, I find the source IP networks of the advertising servers and block em at the firewall by subnet. Sometimes that really helps to stop the choking crap that slows the system down. I find myself with a ever increasing amount of advertising, even from my own Yahoo's Lithium Blue Ad Servers embedded within my own internet service servers. I think even Kalmbach has a server that is stopped at the firewall as well without disrupting the forum Ive accumulated so many rules on it now.

I have yet to pay for automatic software to block ads however that is always a possibiltiy.

When things get too bad with advertising and flash macromedia, I have a "Killbit" set up to kill off all flash bloat and just get text based content. I still miss the old forums but have made do with this one by making adjustments to stop the bloat at the wire.

But the Mozilla Firefox is one of the best ways with the add ons to stop and knock the internet down.

The Bloat is the biggest enemy. They always require more bandwidth, faster systems, bigger internet connections, more servers to feed more.. always more. Im actually pushing back and saying enough is enough and cutting down the fat to get to beef. Im afraid that I will have to slice the whole bull up before ever seeing any content that is actually useful from another human.

Oh, I forgot one other item. I subscribe through the hobby shop for MR and trains classic I dont do it here where I can be served up additional bloat.

Robby P Wrote-Ahhh... I will just have to play with it more. Yep. It's "other bookmarks" in the top right corner of my screen. The wrench icon above that is where you change your font size/style and other options. So far the only problems I've seen are hitting the quote button doesn't work and no smiley list. I can live without those for the increase in speed. The copy/paste works the same as IE. That's the big thing I hated about Firefox. The video speed and quality is what impressed me most. I didn't know a different browser could make such a difference in that.

I tried the Google Chrome, and I was very dissapointed. It was very boring & slow. So I tried IE 8 its good, but I like IE7 better. So I'm heading back to microsoft to get IE7.

It seems to me that there is no ONE solution to the forum's or other sites internet problems.  I have gone from W95 to W98 to Pro, and from dial-up to HS DSL and now IO Cable, as well as a bunch or upgrades to my computer - each step bringing improvements.  With all the operating systems, computer brands, Internet explorers, connection options, computer board upgrades, etc., it is possible that no two of us are using the EXACT same equipment!!  Something like WPF can load almost instantly (mine now takes no more than 10 sec per page & often only 4 or 5), to many minutes for someone in Wyoming or Idaho or Alaska, who only can get dial-up.  Soon, we may all have instant service - beam me up Scotty!!  AlienBig Smile

I used to use Firefox and went back to IE. When I click on the Firefox icon, nothing happens for 10-15 seconds. No indication whether the click "took"; no action at all -- and then it opens. Very frustrating, and this is on a fairly fast DSL line. Is there a solution to this?

My wife has a friend who works for Microsoft.  She never has any problems with IE or vista...or any other Microsoft software for that matter. Laugh

Yeah the copy/cut/paste issue in Firefox is a huge pain.  I have to use Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V and Ctrl+X in order to get anything done! Wink

I haven't had any with copy/cut/paste in Firefox since they started the new forum. On the old forum I had to use ctrl-c/ctrl-x/ctrl-v.

As regards security issues---click the wrench icon on upper right corner---box comes up scroll down to options --click that---another box appears---under the under the hood tag will show security section---default on mine was that all pop ups et al were blocked---very picky system this---you can set it too.

I haven't tried Chrome yet.   I use Firefox with Ad Block, and my current version has the right click feature.  I never really liked any of IE's offerings.  Of the rare website that doesn't like Firefox, I have the IE extension, that makes the site think it's running in IE.

I found the same thing too Jeff. I use Firefox 3.0.17 at the present and I've been happy with it.
