Average price for a set like that. I've seen them higher.

Its a el cheapo Life like train set with double levels. I have built a double level layout out of books and crossword puzzles and it was better than that train set. BTW, the Life Like train set doesn't have DCC.

No doubt, but as has been pointed out, this is not an unusual retail price for such a set.

El cheapo or not it's still two trains, two tracks, two power packs, assorted scenery items. Consider it as two sets for $100 each. And yes, there are suckers out there who will shell out the dough for it.

I use to have something like that, but one was just a circle, and the other was a figure 8. I forget how much it cost, I was probably 5 or 6 when we got it. And yes, people will shell out for that. What's funny is there's much better quality out there for a lot less.

If you don't like the price, why are you posting about it? Do you think Internet Hobbies will suddenly change their price because you think it's too high? Don't you have a better way to spend your time...such as working to improve your layout?

Yes, people will pay for such a set. I was just amazed that  Life Like produced such a expensive set. You would get a better set with the Bachmann DCC sets that are in the same price range.

I've seen a lot less from Bachmann and AHM that cost more. I don't know what AHM is like now but back in the late 80's, early 90's they were Tyco quality and weren't even worthy of a 'kid toy' rating.

Yah, I know, LOL, darn it!  It's just that the train-set looked like it was from the period when they were still running them. Big Smile

I dream of paying a price like this. If Atlas ever ships my O scale GP-7, I will be paying $200 for one engine, and it's not even powered. I will be repowering myself.

The part that infuriates me with this set is the wrong paint job on the geep! Big Smile

I'm not sure if the name "Life-Like" is the most applicable.

My lovely wife,  a retired brain surgeon Whistling bought the exact set from Home Shopping over 2 years ago, for about $100 (she remembers something I said 10 years ago, but doesn't recall the exact price!).  It even comes with the genuine steel track!!  This year I started seeing the UPS truck at the house every day when I came home!!  Thank God she wasn't buying from Home Shopping again, just having an affair with the UPS driverBig Smile

The MSRP of $249.95 is what's listed for this set at Walthers, though.  From that perspective, it's a bargain.  As Casey Stengal used to say, "You could look it up."

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

LaughLaughLaugh - Sign - Oops  What am I laughing about?

My wife has been buying QVC on the installment plan!Sigh

One of the things she bought, the Christmas after we moved into our final home, was this exact set.Shock  IIRC, the price was about $100 -- $120.Pirate

It has served a useful purpose.  A modified loop, made from most of the sectional track, gave the first train run on the premises a place to turn its wheels.Cool  (The train itself was a brass 0-8-0T pulling a string of 4-wheel gondolas with appropriate JNR reporting marks.Approve)  Right of way was a bunch of moving-box cardboard flopped on the joists of a raw L-girder table.Whistling

I still haven't figured out what to do with the rolling stock.Confused  As for the power packs, they'll power accessory lighting in a couple of on-line hamlets - not enough oomph to handle Tomikawa.Grumpy

And cabooses is correct for the "era" in that train set.

BTW, the set my dear wife bought was for our grandsons - but my XXX son-in-law has yet to clear a space in the basement for the boys to have even a 4x8 - the basement is only about 40'x60'!!!!!   Angry

The thing to keep in mind is, how many new model railroaders will come out of buying something like this? Granted it may be cheap and cheezie to those of use who been in the hobby for awhile. But for the beginner it might be the coolist thing they ever recieved or purchased. The dollars don't figure in when you consider that it could be a start of a life long hobby. How many of use started out as full fledged model railroaders? Not Me! My first train set was a gift from Mom, A AHM set with a Soo C-Liner and UP caboose. Cheesy? YES! But it was a start that I'm thankful for.

I think his point was for us all to get a good laugh out of a $200 life-like set.

Since a couple of you have had this set, What are the engines like? Are they crappy old power truck style or do they have 8 wheel drive/pickup? (just curious)

Just what would you think this should sell for $4.95???? But I guess to all you guys who buy $60.00 boxcars, this is trash. Sorry guys, not everyone can spend vast amounts of money on this hobby.

That is the going price, I have seen them in alot of stores at that price. If it gets another person in the hobby then it is worth it.

I'm thinking of buying a Life-Like loco just to see how many laps it'll do before it falls apart.
