Broadway Limited Union Pacific Mt-73 4-8-2 7011
Posted by Trainman11 on Tuesday, December 23, 2008 9:21 AM

I just recently brought this steam locomotive to add to my railroad. However, I am trying to find out the service dates from when to when this locomotive ran for Union Pacific. I need to know this so I can start adding rolling stock to fit the period that the locomotive was in service. Anyone have any ideas on how to find this infomation.

Thanks, Trainman11

From the Broadway Limited website:

  • Magnetic knuckle coupler on locomotive front and tender rear
  • RP-25 contour on drivers and wheels
  • Will operate on Code 70, 83 and 100 rail
  • 22" Radius recommended for best results
  • When the passenger trains became faster and longer, and the Pacifics' were having difficulties maintaining the schedules, the UP decided on the 4-8-2 "Mountain" type to take up the load. They were built with high drivers and plenty of power and served the UP well until 1956.

BLI's model will be patterned after the rebuilt version with a disc main driver, Walschaerts valve gear and "Sweeney" stack, and will use a 12,000 gallon Semi-Vanderbilt tender. We will also offer our Mountains in their black attire as well as in the two-tone gray and white passenger scheme.

It appears they were retired from service in 1956, so your rolling stock would need to be from the 1920-1950 timeframe.

UP #7011 was built 12/22 and was "vacated" March 17, 1954. I note that Broadway's 7011 comes in two-tone. One of the photos of this engine that I'm looking at shows the two-tone scheme--photo date is June 12, 1947. I do not know when or if this loco was repainted to black. The two-tone scheme with yellow striping (as on your model) started in late '46 or early '47. This scheme was assigned to passenger locomotives. You could certainly argue that in "later" years (say '52 to '54) it was demoted to occasional freight service. Ed
