Train Decorations?
Posted by trainfan1221 on Thursday, December 18, 2008 7:16 PM

I am guessing the modeling boards are a better place to post this.   I have been wandering around looking at holiday displays, and I seem to notice a lot more with a train theme this year.  I might just be noticing this many for the first time, but with the new blow up lawn displays and all it seems that many more houses have one.  Whether Santa is riding one or not, it seems to be a popular thing these days.  I would probably have one myself if I owned a house.  Anyone else notice this or am I just picking out these certain ones due to my hobby here?

No you are correct as I too see the trains within the many yard displays.

Probably because the train running around the Christmas tree has not become "politically incorrect" yet!!!  Cool

TA462

Your probably noticing it more because of the hobby.  Have you ever bought a new car, say a red Pontiac G6 and once you own it you realize just how many you see just like yours that you never noticed before?

Exactly! Take an interest in anything and you will indeed suddenly start seeing similarities or association with it in just about everything.

Trains as a decorative Christmas lawn ornament or something similar are a definite example of this. Christmas and toy trains have gone together for over a century (ever count the number of Christmas songs that include a mention of toy trains, or children's Christmas storybooks that show them?) so you've always seen them linked. Certainly, it's no indication of some sudden new interest in trains or model railroading! Smile,Wink, & Grin

I have noticed that there are a number of trains on display here on base that were not here last year.

The base comissary has a Bachmann G gauge set running around on a pedestal in the fresh (not really) produce section.

There is a christmas tree with a plastic G gauge holiday tree running around it.

Light up trains near the base gym, and the list goes on.

There is definitely more decorations out on and around base this year.

The more trains, the merrier!

So many scales, so many trains, so little time.....

I think Ivanhen is correct.   Trains don't offend anybody, even green activist have to admit trains are "carbon friendly" or something, trains have no political affiliation, no secular devotions.  So of course during the CHRISTmas season non religious decorations will be in abundance.  Don't want to under represent any group during CHRISTmas.Oddly, I've seen a lot of helicopter decorations.  I'm not into helicopters as such, but there are lots of them in lights.  Too bad you can't find CHRIST during CHRISTmas anymore.

Our local VFC has a large Christmas train garden they display every year.  A long running east coast tradition...
