Speaking of chowhounds...I'll go for some of those chocolate chip cookies...Audrey made up a batch of chocolate chunk cookies to take to a neighbourhood potluck tonight with some of her friends---missed out on 'em dangnab it!DinnerWhistling

Jeff, Jim;After you were talking about using furnace filters for the hedges I got to thinking about the granery behind the purina mill itself. Being of a coarse grained corrugated metal siding and me not being able to find PITA styrene in quite that form I went down to the local dollar store and picked up a bunch of aluminum cookie sheets---there is my metal granery---heeheeheeMischiefWhistling and all for a dollar(6 11"x16" in a pack).

Jeff, good hedges there - as you said, the weirdest stuff works in MRR'ing. Yeah!!Thumbs Up

I've made 4 more to go with those and still have plenty of that furnace filter left.

Afternoon, Zoe, about time for a root beer float, please. Thank you, Ma'am.

Mark, I never recall having the weather work that well for me when I was in school. You lucky fella! Just remember that in July when you're making up all the snow and ice days you were off...Whistling - Love your fire alarm photo, too.Laugh

Jeff, if I take my glasses off to see where the decal is, I may have it on the next car over!Blindfold I need 'em for anything at reading distance (or closer). Guess I'll have to do my best, or else hire someone to do my decaling for me. Sigh

Yeah!!, Garry - don't ya just love technology? Banged Head Especially when it ain't working too well! Oops On your dancing pic question, I'd say follow PC's directions. I can edit one of those animated gif files on my Mac, but that won't help you much, I'm guessing.

Ray, we Midwesterners believe in sharing our weather, don'tcha know? I hear that when Mark and Sue are done with their snowy weather, they're gonna send theirs along to you, also. Smile,Wink, & Grin Oh, on what Garry said about passing customs here in the Midwest, it gets even more fun in Iowa, because they have these curbs up there that - if you start to go off the road - will bounce you across into the left lane! Great stuff, no? Shock

Ray, you'd better have Zoe and Chloe start taking cookie orders - you may be busy baking all day! That does sound yummy, though... Make mine either chocolate chip (Toll House kind is good) and/or oatmeal raisin, please. Dinner Sheesh, you start talking food around here and all the chowhound genes sure come out!

Jeff, good hedges there - as you said, the weirdest stuff works in MRR'ing. Yeah!!Thumbs Up

Sue, you have me drooling with your layout pics there. Those ones do look like cattle - maybe it was just the one figure that (sort of) resembled a cougar. Don't you have any cougars up in the mountains of the Northwest?Wink I do like your trees (and that gorgeous trestle)!

I'll be finishing up my RBF for now... Oops Well, lookee who has the dinner tab - okay Chloe, start the tab for me.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good afternoon,  I would like a hot cider for this chilly day.  It snowed most of yesterday, and until a hour ago.  Since the sun is out, we might not get any more snow until Saturday.

Mark, You lucked out being in the rain(snow) shadow of the Olympics.  By the way, I love your fire alarm.

Jim,  This is a test.  I am working on allowing you to enlarge this photo.  Please hang in there.  It make take a few edits to get it right.

Here she comes!!!  The National Weather Service has just changed the Winter Storm Watch they put up for the Finger Lakes to a Winter Storm Warning.

A SIGNIFICANT WINTER STORM WILL SPREAD SNOW ACROSS THE AREA STARTING AROUND 9 AM FRIDAY MORNING... THEN THE SNOW WILL BECOME STEADIER DURING THE REST OF FRIDAY MORNING AND AFTERNOON. THE SNOW WILL BE HEAVY AT TIMES FROM LATE MORNING THROUGH MUCH OF THE AFTERNOON... WHEN SNOW COULD FALL AT A RATE OF 1 TO 2 INCHES PER HOUR. THE SNOW WILL TAPER OFF FRIDAY NIGHT.

STORM TOTAL SNOWFALL AMOUNTS ARE LIKELY TO RANGE FROM 6 TO 9 INCHES DURING THE DAY FRIDAY WITH ADDITIONAL MINOR ACCUMULATIONS POSSIBLE FRIDAY EVENING.

TRAVEL CONDITIONS WILL DETERIORATE SIGNIFICANTLY FRIDAY. MOTORISTS SHOULD ANTICIPATE SNOW COVERED ROADS AND VERY DIFFICULT DRIVING CONDITIONS... ESPECIALLY ON UNTREATED AND SECONDARY ROADS. NORTHEAST WINDS OF 15 TO 25 MPH WILL CREATE SOME BLOWING AND DRIFTING PROBLEMS... ESPECIALLY IN MORE OPEN AREAS. VISIBILITIES COULD BE DRASTICALLY REDUCED AT TIMES.

Looks like a fun day.  Hopefully they will close the roads and my son won't have to drive through it tomorrow afternoon to go to work.....  I think tomorrow will be a great day to work on trains, maybe bake some cookies to share..... ApproveSmile

Jeffrey, I like that hedge!

Looks good Jeff.  I read in a mag awhile back, that using yarn makes good rows for gardens or what nots.  You do it the same way as you did your hedges.

I guess they will look like rows of greens or add some white for cotton.

Now that the rain has let up I've been working on the first two strips of hedgerow for the edge of the park. These are nothing more than pieces of dark blue fiber furnace filters with plenty of green spray paint laid on with some generous applications of green blended turf between paint applications and a final layer of blended turf on top.

We have more than our share of crazy drivers here in the backwoods of Georgia. Double yellow on a hill doesn't slow 'em down a bit. I've had to hit the shoulder while driving the pickup truck a couple times when a small car would come roaring into my lane on the windy road here near home.

Contractor thinks he's done today. Will take a serious walk through with the wife Saturday and see if he is or not. We will be glad when this particular chapter of our life is behind us. I think I found a dead plug...nice!Mischief

I ordered all the polarizing filters I need for shooting artwork again. A circular/adjustable lens for the camera and 2 large sheets that I will frame (to place infront of lights). Was hoping I still had them here in the studio. Apparently they went in the fire. This year has been practically dead for selling original oil paintings, so the more prints offered, the better. Wife wants me to do some train paintings. IMO, that would be a very small market and take considerable research to do it right.

Nothing on the train front. Anxious to see the wife's HO buildings when they arrive. Any I don't have to spend time on building is a big plus.

Ever notice that there is never a cop around when people do those kind of things........???ConfusedGrumpy  Yeah, we have our share of those right here in the "backwoods" of NYS.

Ray ...Funny you should say that. One time, I went over a hill and coming the other way was a big 18 wheeler being passed on the double yellow by a State Trooper. Yikes!  Good thing I was going slow enough and there there was a palce to pull off the road.

I’ll take some pictures of the team track.  I’m using scale lumber from Plastistruct to build it.  Scale I think its 15’ x 50’.  The trick will be to adjust the height to match the rolling stock.

We had a fire here in the Federal Building where I work yesterday and earlier that morning a 42” water main burst just down the road.  I have been in early for the past month to get some reports out so the LT let me takeoff last night 20 minutes early.  As I drove out of the parking lot I saw the Fire strobes and then 6 fire trucks blew past me.

Today is get everything done that should have gotten done several days ago and didn't.  Already drove to Seneca Falls and got my hair cut.  Well actually I got all of them cut.  On the way home an idiot roared past me doing about 60 in a 45MPH zone so he could pass the car ahead of me almost running into the car ahead of him in his lane so he could cut right in front of the car he just passed and pull over 3 lanes to turn right at the intersection.  When I got the the intersection he was sitting at the red light waiting to turn..........  Duh?!

Ray ...Here in Rednecksville, drivers will do that, but they do not have multiple lanes to play with. Instead, they pass on double yellow lines, and you have no idea abou approach cars coming over the hills or around the curves. It gets exciting, too, if you are driving uophill, and suddenly you see an oncoming care being passed by a fast car approaching in your lane. No shoulders; just ditches.

Mornin' everyone!

Already had breakfast on the ru7n Flo, but another cup of dark roast would do nicely!

Duh?!

Spent some time working on the layout last night,  Finished (except for some light weathering) 2 boxcars decaled for the SLOW, did a small section of ballasting and got some wires tucked into wire clips so they are a bit neater.

You guys getting the Midwest storm today I hear are planning to send it my way by tomorrow.  We are under a Winter storm watch today and tomorrow.  predicting 4 to 6 inches of "partly cloudy" by tomorrow night.  Lucky for me I can lay low tomorrow if i get all the errands done today.  I also have the last of the concerts tonight that I do Live sound for at school.

Have a great day and prayers to all who are in need!

in a SOUTHERN mug, please & thanks.

***Lee, any chance of posting a pic of Moose? Sounds like a pretty darn lucky dog with a big heart (both literally & figuratively).

***Philip, that no-loss pump is a great idea. Never knew that bikes air shocks were so sensative.

The last of the porch screens went up this morning. Sounds like they are doing mostly clean-up now. As soon as the contractor is done, we'll have the tile & carpet guys come finish it the way we want it done and can move into the new build. Perhaps just a week or so away...I hope.

It's still drizzling out. Every drop helps the water table. Sure am glad it isn't ice, snow or sleet. Some of you are sure are getting more than your share of that stuff.

Slept in this morning, since sleep only arrived after 4:00am. Can't do that again. Late to do morning critter rounds so gotta go. Have a good day all. Cowboy Rob

Jeff, what do you do to keep the lettering decals straight when you're putting them on? When I have tried to line individual letters up in the past, it seems okay - until the decal dries.Shock Maybe my head's off level?

I wet both the surface and the decal, position it and slide it into place and make sure it's straight before I blot it. I blot it again to get up as much moisture as I can as I've had decals drift slightly while drying in the past. You don't by chance wear glasses do you? That can throw it off a little too. I take my glasses off while doing decal work as my bifocals made me see a slight curve that wasn't actually there.

I don't remember rain being in the forecast this morning but guess what? It be raining here!

PC, your post has a picture of a monkey with its head moving.  I would like to post a picture I jsut received in an email that also moves. I do not know how to do that.  I tried copying into my picture folder, and the picture was saved. It, however, does not move. How do I do it?

Go ahead and copy it to your "My Pictures" folder, but it won't move in there.  Now upload it to your host site, like photobucket or whatever, and it should start moving again.  It's just that your "My Pictures" folder isn't configured to recognize the programing that animates it.  Photobucket does.  Just don't change anything in the process.  I don't even rename it.  And you can't doctor the pic up either, or it stopps moving.  As to adding animation to a .gif, someone better at this then me will have to help you there.

 Morning all...

Well, seeing as today's news responds to Jim... I'll just start with that.

Jim: You kiddin' me? It dumped 4" on saturday, and that stuck around until yesterday. The sun was out, but it never got hotter than 30 *F outside... I had school off yesterday, then all of the snow melted and it proceeded to rain, lol... Then I thought I'd have school today, and wake up to half a foot of the fluff outside... Thank god for four wheel drive, eh?

I just looked outside, and I can't see my backyard fence... it's snowing rather hard, lol... I guess I will have winter break 3 days early. Yay for me... Maybe I'll actually get some MRRing done now.

Funny pic time... lets see what I can get... Ok, so most of the funnier ones on the website at this time weren't appropriate for the forum, so I'll settle for this...

Good morning everybody!

Robby .... Too bad about the "No" from one bank.  You did not say if you tried more than once. We have found that when one person at a company (bank or otherwise) says "no", we simply hag up call again, and a different person says "yes". If that does not work, we aske to speak the manager or supervisor, and then we get a "yes". Often, careful phrasing of our question gets better results.

Shelley's car had its "check engine light" on. (Computers drive me crazy.) I kept checking the engine the old fashioned way with a dipstick until the problem was solved. The mechanic told us that a sensor was bad. The computer said half of the cylinders were misfiring. If that were a case, the cars performance would have been significantlt impacted, but the car was driving as good as new.

Philip....  (or any of you computer whizzards) ........ PC, your post has a picture of a monkey with its head moving.  I would like to post a picture I jsut received in an email that also moves. I do not know how to do that.  I tried copying into my picture folder, and the picture was saved. It, however, does not move. How do I do it?

JR ... That is a really neat looking car. .......Plus a lot of other neat pictures.

Good Morning, Zoe - I'll have couple of scrambled eggs, toast with blackberry jam, two strips of bacon, cup of the TH in a Santa Fe mug, and a glass of Ed's OJ, please 'n' thank you, Ma'am. Dinner

Tom - I'm sure Remington will thank you for that trip to the vet, with a suitably large hairball on your feet, eh? Good to hear he had something easy to treat, and good that you're allowing him to get some attention at the vet's office. We all know how neglected your cats are... Laugh

Sue, I guess I should re-think my delaying getting new glasses, huh? Cattle - you sure one of them doesn't slightly resemble a cougar? Sigh

Hope you Great Northwest & Northern California Diners (TrainsRMe, Sue, Mark, Tom, and all) don't get hit too badly with that predicted storm. I think we're supposed to warm up in SE Missouri a little today or tomorrow, and then a day or two later, get another cold front coming through. Hey, nothing like the 'variety' of Missouri weather, is there?Laugh Had some 'fog frost' on the car's windshield this morning that was mostly a nuisance to scrape off, nothing bad at all today.

BC, when will you be ready for that mini-seminar on DCC that Chloe posted a note about? Wink Yeah, sometimes it feels about like learning a foreign language.Banged Head When you guys get a Winter Storm watch up there with those kinda temps, I hate to think what Tom's weatherguessers would call that (but I doubt that they'd say it was 'mild'...Whistling)

Rob - Chloe was playing 'Midnight Train to Georgia' last night? Gee, I miss all the fun when I'm Zzz It'd be nice if your body could get used to sleeping, wouldn't it?

Paul, do you get to nap alongside Mary Ann when she's napping at the dialysis center? That might give you a chance to catch up a little for having to get up at that unpleasant hour of the morning. How far away is the center from you?

JR, that's a nice little car there! Thumbs Up What kind of shape was it in when you got it to work on?

Jeff, what do you do to keep the lettering decals straight when you're putting them on? When I have tried to line individual letters up in the past, it seems okay - until the decal dries.Shock Maybe my head's off level?

Lee, will you be having pictures of your team track and progress? I have one spot on my current layout that I'm debating between having a small junkyard, or a team track. It may depend on what will fit - it's a fairly narrow and small area (not sure a truck could turn around in there, even).

PC, hope your area dodges the worst of that weather - but if not, will the pizza people deliver to your office in bad weather? Smile,Wink, & Grin

I'll settle into the corner booth, if I can do that without waking up Duke. Prayers for healing and comfort (and a warm place to be today) on the way.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

I will tell you whats up with me!!!!  Check engine light Banged Head.

The oil hasn't been changed in awhile, since I don't drive the car (05' Neon).  I thought that might be it.  Nope.  Later today I might go back out and undo the battery and see if that resets it.  I hope so.

I will try to get back in the basement in a minute and try to finish up my hills, backdrop, etc.

The wife did call the two banks we have the cars and see if we can skip this month since I had my ours cut.  One did, they said thats fine (the one with the engine light on).  The other bank could care less.  They said sorry Angry.  So at least the one will help out.

Sucks about the ice storm.  Thats all we had back in NC.  They are calling for somthing Sat-Sun, but not sure yet.  You know they will change it.  One minute rain, next minute snow.

Well I guess I will go see what I need to do, layout wise.  I will pop in and out today.

Morning all!

Time to grab that first cup and hit it for today!

It's been a long week so far!  Lots of problems in the phone world!

Well, New England got hit pretty hard last week with the ice, and now it looks like it's the Midwest's turn.  We're supposed to get anywhere from 1/4" to up to 3/4" of ice here in Indiana tonight.  I hear that Illinois might be getting it worse.  We have a winter storm warning in effect from 7pm till 9am that should bring some nasty stuff, but they say tomorrow should be around 40 degrees, so maybe it won't be too bad?  Oh well, should make for a fun evening tonight at the phone company!

I got a call yesterday from the local motorcycle shop saying that a part I ordered was in.  See, my bike has air adjustable shocks in the rear, but they take very little air to pump them up.  A couple of pumps from a bicycle pump would take them from empty to maxed out, so a compressor is no good.  Not only that, but pecause they hold so little air, that little pfft of air that you get when you take that filler hose off can radically change the pressure inside the shocks.  Now remember, the two shocks on each side have to be the same pressure or the bike handles funny.  Using an air pressure guage also allows air to escape, thereby changing the pressure.  So what is one to do?  I talked to a company that specializes in bike suspentions and they sell a pump that has a built in guage on it thats made for bike shocks.  It's a "no loss" pump, meaning that there is no air pressure lost when you remove the hose, and since there's a guage built in, you're all set!  They also make a kit to connect both shocks to one filler pointso that the shocks are automatically balanced from side to side, and I'll probably go snag that kit after Christmas.  Thats like, more then you really wanted to know about motorcycles, huh?  It's just my winter project, thats all.  I'm trying to get it in tip top shape for next summer as it'll likely be my main transport for the season.  I'm trying to get tires on it, fluids changed, brakes done, and so on before the spring.

So anyways, it's the calm before the storm, literally, around here.  Whats up with you?

Good morning all,

I finished installing the people for my passenger station last night, I even took pictures to share those will be posted tonight after work.  I also started building a team track from scratch.  I have the deck and framing completed and one coat of rail tie brown on it.  I need to install the legs and a final coat of paint.

Tom my birthday was the 11th I think yours was the 10th.

Dorothy is busy foster caring for a bull mastiff puppy that was rescued from a house explosion 4 months ago.  The dog I have named MOOSE spent 4 months going through surgery and rehab but is doing well and other than a few scars you could never tell he almost bought the farm.  Dorothy is a registered AKC judge and dog trainer and I think she named the dog : “No No Bad Dog”.  At 75 pounds the puppy really tries to be careful in the house, but manages to knock over almost everything.

 Good morning.

It's 56, foggy and very wet here by the lake. The high should be in the low 70's and it will be mostly cloudy.

I didn't much of any one thing done yesterday. I got caught up on some wiring work and did a bit of work on some scenery. When the weather and my health allows I'll cut up a furnace filter to make some hedgerows to hide the gap between the liftout (park) portion of the layout and the area around it. I have some green lichen there now but that's just a stop-gap measure until I can make something more permanent. The problem with lichen is that it tends to get hard and brittle and must be replaced more often than I would like to. The furnace filter cuttings will be painted a base green color (probably Kelly green) and will be treated to a heavy application of green blended turf and some clump foliage. Once this is set in place and secured I shouldn't have to replace it for at least a couple of years.

Good thing I missed the 'midnight train to georgia' bit last night...otherwise my poor little head would have been on it all night.---wonderful song though...Smile,Wink, & Grin
