Mornin' everyone!

A rather dull dreary day here in the Finger lakes.  Currently 36°F with a high around 40°.  Cloudy and gray with a chance of some precipitation and white stuff.  Good thing is today will clear off the ice building up at the eaves of the roof.  I won't have to turn on the electric deicers.....

I will be spending most of the day cleaning house getting everything ready for Turkey Day and having the family over.  My son from Chicago called last night but I didn't hear the phone (probably working in the basement shop - no phone there) but he didn't leave a message.  I am going to throw him an e-mail this morning to make sure he is OK.

Tom your kitties will soon be best of friends I'm sure.  When I inherited my Mom's little old kitty, I did much the same MO with her and my "boys".  Manet (the 20 lb. sweety) and Sheila soon became buddies.  Manet still climbs up by the computer sniffs around and looks at me like "Where is she?".  For those of you that don't know, I had to have Sheila put to sleep last summer at the age of 21.

This was Sheila just a few months before I lost her.  She was a very sweet old girl!

Rob glad to hear that Sandy is holding her own.  Tough for all us to get old..........

I best get to work so I'll just finish my morning coffee and be out of here.

Howdy Podnas!

Looks like a busy weekend was had by all and the diner stayed busy too!

Happy Birthday to Sawyer and Jerry! Happy B-Day BBQ dinner sounds like a real hit!

Nothing going on around these parts with the model railroad, but on Friday we are going to ride the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad from Dillsboro, NC. Looking forward to that trip and will post a report upon our return.

Thoughts and prayers to all in need and recovery!  Angel

In addition to Jerry's BBQ leftovers, here is some Split Pea Soup for lunch today....Dinner

I found it at Hare's Art & Hobby in Alexandria. That's the closest LHS to me. Still a 120 mile round trip.

Morning Zoe - no, the shades are 'cause my opthalmologist dialated my eyes this morning. Not hardly am I famous.Cool I'll have some of Jerry's BBQ on a bun, with some cheesey fries and a Dr. Pepper, please and thank you, ma'am.

My every six months checkup with the eye doctor this morning. They did the annoying eye pressure check (seemed like two times that I could tell) and took the picture of the back of my retina for the Dr. (Don't look for it just yet on my Photobucket account). Dr. said my eye pressure was up some (wouldn't be as much of a problem for the average person),. That might have to do with my getting annoyed about having to buy two kinds of eye drops that only maintain my current level of glaucoma. Sure doesn't make sense to me that my health insurance balks at paying for my non-generic drops (Dr. said there may be a generic version on one this next year), sort of "We'll let you go blind until you qualify for disability, and then they'll pay for your meds". Sorry for the rant, but today's been a struggle to keep my internal attitude above sea level. Don't feel (outside of the Diner) like I'm getting the support that everyone else gets from me. Also kinda peeved that my daughter and son-in-law can't quite manage manage to alternate seeing me and their other parents on holidays. (Stepping down from the SoapBox now...

Last night I cooked the roast I got on Saturday, which I'll warm back up for Thanksgiving Day. Didn't find out if our local grocery store's deli was offering the individual (or double) portions of a Thanksgiving dinner 'plate', so this is my alternate plan. Already have some of the other fixin's (cranberry sauce, (instant) mashed potatoes, fruit, etc.). Since I'll be the backup for the on-call, I didn't want to have the roast started cooking (for 3 hours or so) and then get called out.

Robby, hope your heating guy gives you a good quote (and payment arrangements) - being cold is no fun during the winter. Only so much can be done in the way of adding layers of clothing... Stay warm as you can.

Sawyer, sounded like you were learning painting at the school my Dad used to tell me about - the "School of Hard Knocks" (aka trial and error, with a lot of the latter). Hope you were able to get the maroon coat off fairly well and re-do it without too much fuss. The photos look like it turned out all right. Thumbs Up

Tom, we will add your next couple of weeks with your house guest to our AngelAngel list. So are Spooky and Remington exchanging "Hi, you new to this area?" chirps, or "Who the heck do you think you are, invading MY space?" chirps? Or can you tell Maine Coon cat chirps apart on the friendly vs. curious vs. hostile kinds?

Johnboy, you rascal, you - are you sure that gas station story isn't autobiographical? WinkLaugh

Burnout Cylinder, good thing that Spring isn't any heavier, huh? Do you have to avoid putting fragile ornaments on the side of the tree that Spring uses to come down off the shelves? (Like no glass balls or delicate ornaments)

Jeff, with the various gremlins you have from time to time, it's good that you have that good electrical background (and no, Garry, I'm not talking about any new backdrop that Jeff got ]:-^])

Rob, that was neat about seeing the Screetch Owl up close and personal (more or less). On your painters, it could be that the painter is color blind, or the one who got the paint for them was. At least you're getting closer now. Good to hear Sandy's holding her own, and I hope your 'doctoring' will help her improve soon.

Jerry, that's a good passle of grandkids you have there - probably a better deal than having them all at your place! Might've been hard pressed for breathing room if they were all in an apartment, huh?

Ryan, your trip on Friday sounds like much more fun than going to a mall in the wee hours for a sale, but then again, maybe that's just my take on things. Smile,Wink, & GrinWhistling

I'll slip into the corner booth for now and work on my lunch.

Blessings and Prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please & thank you.

***Jerry, that is a LOT of kids there.

***Ray, Sheila certainly had a wonderful home with you to reach the grand old age of 21.

***Ryan, look forward to seeing lots of pics from the trip. Cool!

***Jim, sending healing thoughts your way. You need your eyes for MRRing.

Went to HD today & picked up a can of the right paint for that door.

Also picked up the bulbs for the train room. Will take pics of it to share soon.

Off to do some touch-up on outside (my part of the build). Then might tackle repainting that door myself.

Most of the time that's a real blessing but at other times it can be like a curse. There are times I overlook something simple because I've already convinced myself that it's something more complex.

Thanks for the happy b-day Ryan!

Jim, actually, I just painted over the maroon, took about 3 coats. Now that I've seen it do that, I think I can salvage my GP9 and get it painted, if the Maroon can still cover the bits of paint left over, lol.

 Afternoon all!

Flo, some nice hot mulled cider would hit the spot!

I, too, would like Ryan to post photos of the Smokey Mountain trip.

I'll make that 3 (or more).

Rob I actually only had Sheila for a little over 3 years.  My Father got her as a pet for my Mother after their dog died.  Found at the local Humane Society.  She was supposed to be 4 years old but turned out she was 14 instead.  My mom had her for 5 years and when she died, I inherited the old girl.  She was a very gentle and sweet old thing.  She never ever weighed more than 7.5 lbs.  At the time I lost her she weighed 4.25 lbs.  The boys now weigh in at 19 and 20 lbs. respectively.  All my cats are inside kitties (declawed) and I might have lost Manet at about 1 1/2 years old if he had been an outside cat.  He has Feline Urinary Tract Syndrome.  Their other brother was an outside kitty and died at about 1.5 years old mysteriously.  I figure he had FUTS as well as there is a genetic link.

We are currently having a nice little snowstorm here.  Lucky I got back from shopping just as it started.

Back to work!

MMMMM mulled cider sounds good.  Add me to the clamor for Ryans' photos.

Rob - sounds like you are having an adventure with the interior painters. Could you really be colorblind and a painter? You can just see it now "looks fine to me maam, what do you mean it's red instead of brown?"

Love those KC135's Colby. Got a free ride in one from Kadena AFB to Beale AFB when i got leave on short notice and couldn't book a flight. Only problem was all the seats were taken so i ended up riding on the boxes of cargo. I was the only one able to lay down and sleep as the seats were webbing and less than comfy. Stopped at Hickam(sp) Field enroute which is the only time I've set foot on Hawaii.

Jerry - what a nice group for your party. Glad you enjoyed it.

Jim - don't be too hard on the kids, some parents really apply the guilt trip and pressure so it ends up shorting you. Leave the door open and hopefully they'll realize what's up and try to make up for it.

As for the CFO and I we're going to our oldest sons for Thanksgiving as having dinner at the rental house just didn't feel right. They've just moved in so it's also a good excuse for them to pick up. Time to get back to it. CUL, J.R.

Ah - Top Of The page and nearly dinner time. Line up gents (and Sue if you wander in) the credit card is on file. I'll stop in later for a bite.   Big Smile

Evening Gang: Thanks for all the kind thoughts on the calf. Unfortunately it's a fact of ranching.

Sue the prices are down here.

Not much going on today. My doc visit checked out good. Mary Ann is going ot have another test and see a kidney doc. I lost 3 lbs so I'm on the right track. I just found out that the VA sent me the wrong drugs the last time they refilled. I didn't notice and have been taking a drug for itching that I was given a couple of years ago. Fortunately it is not a problem. Tomorrow I have to figure out what I'm supposed to have.

Well I think that I'll head for bed.

Good evening Diners:  I began this yesterday afternoon, and have only now been able to finish it, Monday night! So, I’ll have a black tea and a toasted oatmeal bagel with cream cheese please, and join whoever’s in the corner booth, if you don’t mind.

Garry:  That Bowser looks great.  My train room was a little dark so I turned on a desk lamp, hope you don’t mind. Sure shows the details Wink

Sawyer: The maroon going purple with the flash is a surprise! Just shows what colour differences there are in the various spectra given off by light sources. Does you camera have a setting that allows you to switch between types of light sources, like incandescent , fluorescent, photo-flash, etc? My first digital did, but I haven’t found it on later ones. Maybe I should Shockread the manual!

RobbyP: tomorrow! Hope it’s a good one for you.

CapeJim: How were you planning on re-heating that roast?  Recommended safe practice (at any rate one that I’d recommend), is to slice what you need, and heat the slices in the gravy. That gravy needs to be about boiling, BTW before you pop in the slices. I know it lacks the “Ta Da” of a whole bird being carved at the table, but pretty much ensures the survival of the guests rather than the bacteria that grow while the large cold roast slowly re-heats in the oven.  They may get killed by the final heat, but the slow warm up gives them time to produce toxins that are heat resistant. For similar reasons any stuffing inside the bird needs to be got out of there before the thing cools down…are we too late for that one? My 2 cents

Sue: The “progress” on the layout may be smoke and mirrors.  Don’t forget that some of the photos I’ve show recently are from 1980s and 1990s era layouts! However, I do have a “Ta Da” about the container crane today…the power cable is assembled onto the boom and attached to both the control cabin and the spreader.  The machinery and hoist buildings are pretty much finished, and apart from touch up paint over the excess super glue, the boom is on the frame. The spreader, control cabin and the power cable are all independently position-able along the length of the boom, but I doubt I’ll actually do that often.

There’s some more support braces, and the boom hoist cables to do, then all the stairs and walks. You know all about that from the coaling tower!  I’m having a go at making my own railings and some of the stairs. I’m experimenting with etching brass sheet for the railings. Don’t know if it will work, but I think it’s worth a try.  I figure I can make a jig for producing stairs in quantity.  Depends on my ability to either cut slots in an aluminium bar accurately with a jeweller’s saw, or (idea came as I was typing) adapt a couple of hair combs to hold the treads equi-distant while the stringers are applied.  Should keep me busy!

Paul: Sorry too about the calf, and I know it's not the finacial loss that's the real bother, just why it happened, and what could be done to prevent a repeat.      Now it’s bed time yet again. Tomorrow there’s only a slight chance of doing anything on the layout as it’s back to the dentist.  A 20 minute appointment for a minor matter, but it’s “kiss the day goodbye” because of the travel time and the shopping that one has to do, making the most of the opportunity. Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.Angel

Good evening ..

A pie fight, eh.

Der John ... Glad you like that old Bowser Northern Pacific 4-8-4.... My other two Bowsers are a 4-8-2 (lettered ATSF) and a Pennsy 4-4-4-4.  The NP model does not have added detail, but the others do have extra details.

I was running the Pennsy 4-4-4-4 today. It has two motors and weighs five pounds. It can haul any train I put behind it and go up any grade. It will climb the walls if needed. The prototype 4-4-4-4's were quite something. They could haul 25 heavyweight passenger cars at 100 mph with ease. Amazing machines!
