Mornin' everyone. hopefully gonna get a N/Z Walthers catalog today, and maybe a little something else. I've also decided to model fall on my next layout, just too good of time of year to pass up. I think I can do, anyone have any tricks for it? I was wondering if I could soak the woodland scenics ground foam in dyed water, then let the water dry off to sorta tone them down for a few trees. 

well, no catalog, but i do have a new boxcar and some fall foliage. No pics now b/c of lack of camera.

Fine here not sure how but I posted befor wanted to anyway told you all i would try and drop in and let you all know whats been going on.

It seems that I never really needed the Difibrilator ( more test to come but pointing that way) the doctor went from a to z with out stopping in the middle to see why things were happening. If he would of tried a monitor on my side say for a week and asked about my diet he would have found some things out and did some other test that should have been done to determaine If I needed one or not things would have probally been different but now that its over 2 years its to late to file a suit for malpratice as it has to be done with in 2 years of the wrong ful pratic can be filed and I've had this 2 1/2 years so again I find out to late. So life goes on. I'm doing well other wise and once I find out for sure I want to either have it turned off or removed which ever they recommend and see If I can get my CDL back for one. Not that I would go get a job driving truck but I could Get it if I ever needed to. I lost it because of this.

Well not to much else is happening hope all are doing well and prayers to those who need them.

Evening Gang:

RT I feel the same way about my commerical pilots license. I won't use it but I want to know that I have it. I need to pass a flight physical.

Mary Ann and I went to the parade and then out to the National Viet Nam war museum site for the unvailing of the Camp Holloway wall. A Huey flew over the parade twice and then came in and landed at the museum site durning the  ceramonies. This Huey is the one that was at the air show in Ft. Worth last year. The folks that own it let me sign my name to the padding on the aft trans mission bulk head. My name is still there. Very neat.

After we got home I got back to work on the flat cars. I put one coat of paint on the one that is yellow. I'll letter it for the C&NW. While that was drying I started to put the deck on the KL&SCF flat. I only got the stringers installed before it was time to quit.

Well I've got a head ach and am tired so I'll head for bed.

Good Evening Diners:  I’m at least 11 pages behind in replies, but wanted to drop in for some update photos on the trucks for that container crane.This is going to take a large JR Regular, and a slice of Apple pie a la mode. Thanks, 675!

 

 

I decided not to go for the long design that my N Scale wheel trial piece dictated, but revert to the short, sloped truck frame that I had drawn on my plans.  So for the Z wheels here’s the difference, Z wheeled truck on the right. The two pairs of wheels would be in separate detachable modules hinged onto the main sideframes.  The prototype for this arrangement I found at http://www.fotosearch.com/IMR186/ie016-083/  but I massively simplified from that monster!

 

 

What I wanted to achieve was the look of two separate modules, and I tried this by suggesting a hinge bearing between the main side frame and the modules.  This required cutting down a suitable rod of plastic, and thinning the resulting sections to give a flat bottomed ¼ round that would go on top of the main side frame, while the full circle of the end of the bearing was shown by a stamped out thin styrene plug.  I made the stamp tool from an old brass ball point pen ink tube. Being soft metal, it had to be dressed by needle file after each stamp, and I needed 16 of the little beauties! Here’s the ¼ rounds and the plugs, with the stamp tool.The modules themselves were suggested by lines cut into the side frames.  I also re-thought having the motors on the outside of the trucks, and went for an internal, vertically mounted motor for each truck. I suggested those by cooling louvers made from Evergreen Scale Models 4031 Clapboard siding (030” spacing) thinned down to about 2 paper sheets thickness. Servicing those motors might require removal of the louvered panels, so I thought, “Why not grab irons?”Here’s the first completely detailed truck with all those features. Only 3 more to go!     

 

 

 

 

 

So that’s what I’ve been up to, and with any luck I should be able to mount the trucks on the crane frame by close of play (OZJim will recognize that  ) tomorrow. I see from the close-up photos that I’ve some cosmetic sanding to do before I paint!

RT, that’s a real bummer about the 2½ years thing.  You’d think that they would leave more time for something to become apparent, as in your case. Not good since the loss of wages (CDL) is very real, not to mention the physical trauma and psychological burden.

Evening all, just got back from playing Vesper Mass--went well.  Fr. Anthony's Homily had to do with healing after the election this year.  Interesting, evidently yesterday he saw a car with a bumper sticker that said "He's not MY President," so he gave a very short (5 minute tops) and succinct Homily on working together.  It was food for thought, especially here in California, where there are a lot of bad feelings over several State Propositions.  Okay, enough political stuff. 

Went to the Roseville Train Show this afternoon.  As usual, I was looking for a brass loco that needed some TLC, and found one.  No, I didn't buy it, because the price-tag was close to $800, and even though it was an old 1960 era Max Gray loco, I thought the price was really TOO high, and the seller was not negotiating.  It was a strange show this year, not a lot of really 'cool' stuff, and what I saw was a lot of overpriced junk.  I DID pick up a couple of large Bragdon rock-castings for use on my infamous "Buttes", some new stuff they've just released.  When the weather settles down, I'm gonna have fun with them.  I like the Bragdon stuff--I use their self-adhesive weathering chalks on my locos (and maybe someday I'll get brave enough to try them on some of my freight cars), and it's good stuff, it doesn't 'wear off' on your fingers if you really HAVE to lift up a loco.  Besides, their company is just 45 minutes up the road from me in Georgetown, so if my LHS doesn't have what I need right away, it's a nice, scenic drive up to the foothills to get what I need.  Neat people, and they sure put out a lot of great scenery products. 

But $800 for a Max Gray brass loco?  Three years ago I bought an old Max Gray SP MT-3 4-8-2 for about $250, and all it needed was a new NWSL can motor and the gears cleaned out.  Runs like a champ, pulls like an ox.  There was also an old Akane Cab-forward AC-7, with a new can motor, and it was going for $750.   Now I know I'm not out of the loop on used brass, but an AKANE?  Sorry fellas, but I think a Reality Check is due pretty soon, LOL!

Okay, enough griping about the Train Show.  At least I got some cool castings. 

Heading down to the SPCA tomorrow to see about that "Wegie" kitten.  Spooky must know something's in the air, she's been following me around as if she's suddenly turned into a big, fuzzy Laborador Retriever, today.  As in "Bring me back a Toy, tomorrow, Daddy.  I need a BUDDY!"

Well, we'll see.  Maine Coon and "Wegie?"  Should be an INTERESTING household if it works out, LOL!

We just returned from going out to eat. I had teriaki steak at a Thai restaurant which is about 35 miles west of here.  We cross the Land Between the lakes to get there.

RT ... Sorry to hear of your experiances wth the defibrilator I can, hover, attest that it is better to be safe than sorry. My doctors are 100% certain that my defibrilator saved my life in August when my my heart. It re-started my heart beat several times before the helcopter got me to hospital Nashvile, TN . So it is really great to be alive.

Looks like Tom may get a new addition to the "family". Best wishes with that , Tom.

I think I'll go spend some time with the layout now.

Sue, I have a couple more Santa Fe triple hoppers (and a UP one) to do, a Frisco PS-1 boxcar, two Santa Fe plug door boxcars (need to renumber one...), another SF AAR and a Cotton Belt AAR boxcar. I also have an Accurail New Haven boxcar (need a handful of eastern RR's, including some NYC's, for that occasional stray shipment wandering in from the east coast , and a Bowser Frisco covered hopper (2-bay), and a Walthers GSC flat car/pulpwood car (can be assembled either way). I have some P2K kits (some gons, 50 auto boxcars, etc.) to assemble as well. But then again, once I get them put together, I won't be able to fit them all on my current layout just yet. Hmm... maybe I need to find me a wife who wants a hot tub, so I could justify expanding my layout...(nah, not yet, anyway)

I went to get the Rix grain bin kit to start on it today, but couldn't find it. I did find some other things (like the Walthers modular yard office I've been working on a while back), just not the grain bin. Frustrating... I was able to get rid of some boxes after moving bunches of stuff into four more tubs I'd bought at Sears yesterday evening. Did feel good to haul four of the (empty) cardboard boxes out to the dumpster, and the stuff on the shelves does look neater now.

Tom, repeat after me: "Step away from the table, Tom. Step away from the brass table, Tom..." Hope you and Spooky find her another cabeese-stealer, whether another Maine Coon or other breed. I'll [ditto] Garry's remarks on your bringing Spooky home a li'l buddy.

Paul, after your days have been lately, I'd say you deserve an afternoon or evening of kicking back and watching that RR DVD with a cold drink.

DerJohn, your eyes must be way above normal, from all the work you've been doing on the crane and subassemblies.

RT, that was a definite bummer that you only found out six months after the statute of limitations on malpractice ended. Hopefully, they'll be able to easily remove the defib and let you get back to a more 'normal' life. Have you been doing anything new with your trains?

Thought I'd drop by for an update on the goings on round here. Every one here somes to be doing ok. JAMIE had her surgury, and they got all the cancer. Guess it was a small spot bout the size of a quarter.

The oldest grand daaughter [Beth] informed us that she's going to give us our first great grand kid next June. I'm not to trilled bout it, but not much I can say, she's 18 [still to young in my book].

Still trying to find a new engine for Mother's bus. It has the heavy duty block in it and all we can find is standard. We found one $900 and no guarenty. A GM factory rebuild is $2000 now. 

I've decided I really hate the time change this year. The clocks may be turned back an hout, but I'm still on milkin time, so instead of going up round 4, it's 3.

On some train news, a CSX train came thru with 2 wind genoraters stands late Thursday headed east. Don't know how far they were going, but IND has been building a couple 3 windfarms on the praires. Haven't seen the blades for these, go through yet

Morning all !  I got the layout uncovered yesterday first time it's seen daylight since the storm

since i already had it covered it was a good time to ad clouds to the sky board so my friend art came over and sprayed some using stencils.

I have a hard time spray painting since my operation as I no longer breath through my nose I have no natural filter so the over spray goes straight to my lungs and I cough alot

I'm very pleased with the look and will try to get some photos posted when my son brings my computer back

Right now I'm using his lapto as a loner while he puts a new hard drive in mine

It seems like a quiet day so a pot of coffee in a back booth please Chloe.

Last night my wife took me out for my birthday dinner. My birthday was last Monday but we rarely celebrate on the day. We went to the restaurant, Mirlycourtois, where she helps out Thursdays. It was a really great meal! I had Coquille St. Jacques for starters and veal cheeks done in a wine reduction sauce for the main course. This is the only place where I've seen veal cheeks and they are really terrific so if you ever get a chance, do try them. My wife had fresh oysters which she does love.

I was talking to a local train expert at the LHS yesterday who told me that BNSF runs a high hood GP9 here that has been in Winnipeg since new (1958). I thought I was seeing things a few weeks ago when I saw it running on CN's line not far from here. It's operated by a short line in the city that originally belonged to NP & GN. One of these days I'll have to set up a Photobucket account and learn how to post pictures as I wouldn't be surprised if it is the only high hood Geep operated by BNSF.

Another cool day here, with a high of about 25F and cloudy.

Luc, thanks for the reminder on remembering. In church today, the pastor had all the veterans stand up, and I was kind of surprised there weren't more. It felt  a bit awkward, because I never had to go to 'Nam and all my service was in the continental US. Others had it much rougher than I did. My Dad didn't talk much about his service, but I do recall that he was in WWII in Germany and was in the Communications Corps (think he might have gone in on or soon after D-Day to set up lines for communications). So I feel like I got off with 'light duty'. I got out on Sept. 1, 1971 and started back in college about the next day. 

Inch, even if she is too young, hope your Beth has a healthy great-grandbaby for you & Deb. Good to hear that they got it all out for Jamie. Hope you find a suitable engine block for Deb's bus. I'm guessing the other stuff on the bus is still w**king okay, right? Good story there on the Gunny. And do you have cows there, or are you just getting up when the cows would?

Jerry, sounds like you and Inch are having some colder weather than we have. I think we were supposed to reach 45 F (7 C) and dropping off to 26 F (-3 C?!!) tonight. Guess I might see some frost to scrape in the morning, maybe. Hope you get the chair seat changed or some other solution found. Getting those sores is not good, I hear.

Terry, best wishes on getting things all lined out for the train tour at your place. Good that you have friends to help with some of the things. From what I've heard, it's a lot of work even when a fella isn't tuckered out. Will look forward to seeing the pics (though they might be after the tour, since you'll likely be sorta busy between now and then). Good to have your own tech in house to manage your computer repairs.

Lee, do you still have snow on the ground? I always forget that your area can get some lake effect snow. I'm used to thinking of Pennsylvania or New York getting it, but don't think of Indiana and Ohio so much that way.

CN Charlie, sounds like an excellent birthday dinner. I think I've only had veal a couple of times in my life, let along having veal cheeks. Hey, you get that Photobucket account - I'd love to see what kind of shape that GP9 is in, after fifty years of service (even with repairs)! Flo, could you bring me a ATSF mug and I'll help Charlie out with that coffee pot a little...

GEEZ YA'LL, THE TOP OF PAGE 2?!?! WAKE UP!!! LOL, sorry, just had to do that. I'll take some water right now, my gut hurts from eating Dominoes Pizza (what's funny is one of my friends' dad owns the local franchise here, lol). Well, I've decided to build a small main-line diorama w/ some code 80 track and other stuff I've got, to see what I can do w/ my fall foliage. It'll have the mainline, a forest in back, and grassland in front, because there will be a road right in front (but just out of view of the track). There will also be a country road crossing (dirt road). I've got the track down, now need to paint it, apply the basic layer of ground cover, ballast, and find my dang road ruler so I can build the road. Till tommorow ya'll, I'll have that water to go, lol.

Evening Gang: I finished the deck on the box car red flatcar. I was going to do the black flat next when I noticed the the primer was showing at a few places. So out comes the spray gun again and I gave it another coat. By then it was time to get the cattle out of the pasture. We are supposed to get some ran possibley by morning so I had to put everything under cover. I had to leave the black flat out because the paint was still wet and couldn't be handled.

Inch congrats on your going to be a great grand pa. I know that it is a bit early for your granddaughter but it can't be changed. I know that you will be a great great grand pa.

Tomorrow we are supposed to get some rain. I sure hope so since it is very dry.

I guess I'll head for bed.

Good Evening All,

      Been out for a few days as I've been busy. Well, tis done. I have all my train stuff packed up and stored in the shed we built along with the layout. Much of the layout came apart ok and is hanging from the cross ties in the roof. Two of the larger pieces are laying sideways on the floor of the shed and part of it we ended up cutting off the benchwork so mere mortals could actually carry it. Used one of my old rip saws and hurrah for 2" foam board. Most of the upper levels were 1/4" luan bonded to 2" foam hung from angled shelf brackets and cut apart at the joints fairly easily. I had to pull out all the bridges (15 in all) and many of the cuts occured under the bridges. The bottom level was another story as much of it was recycled 3/4" plywood and OSB from previous layouts. What wasn't water damaged was too unweildy to move and now resides in the dumpster along with the basement walls and celings all of which had water damage or mold started. One thing that hurt was pitching the swing bridge as it had mold all the way up to the ballast. Much of the scenery didn't have any problems probably because I've usually mixed some Lysol into the water for thinning the glue or making the plaster covers. The wooden benchwork was more of a problem so when it goes back in I'll coat it all with urethane sealant - both sides of any new stuff. I'm impressed with the strength of the 1/4" luan glued to the styrofoam and will stick with that as well. Now to start negotiating for more space!!

    Love the progress pics. The gas station is too cool. as is Larrys' bridge! Tom avoided temptation at the train show (I should ever be so lucky) so maybe a new feline companion would be a nice reward, no? And what can we say about Ders' crane build? Perhaps if they ask nicely he can loan the finished project to Canso or the Halifax marine terminal. Looks good enough to be real.

Good evening Diners:  I’ll have some ham and scalloped potatoes, a little squash and cauliflower please, with baked apple and ice-cream for dessert, with a JR Regular.  Thanks Luc!  BTW, Luc and Fergie, the Dartmouth Train Show is next Saturday / Sunday (15^th./ 16^th.)  I’m aiming for Saturday a.m., but the wallet will be light, definitely no brass in the forecast!

 

 

Did manage to get as far as finishing the trucks and attaching them to the crane main frame.  Had to used a slow drying glue (Liquisilk this time) because I had to reposition the trucks in relation to the track a fair bit to get everything aligned, then turn the frame upside down, which is how it is right now, in my vise, while the glue sets up. Worst case, they’re not aligned right, and I’ll have to re-do one or more.  Good thing it was slow dry too, as I discovered that in all my planning I had not taken into account the need to have the wheel flanges face the opposite way on the “other” track. Duh!  So, the far trucks now have the exposed ends of the wheel axels showing, but no biggie I hope, by the time the thing’s painted up. I don’t want to glue a cover over the ends to hide them for fear of glueing the axels in their holes!   

So, no photos of that yet, but here’s something to be going on with. I had to “park” the boom somewhere, and it only lays flat upside down, so here’s a bizarre shot of the really, really strong cables they use on those cranes.

 

 

Lee: Sorry to hear about Nekkia.  How are your kids doing? We’ve give our daughter and grandchildren as Heads Up that we have to take our 13+ rescue dog Rosie(lab + ??)  to the vet tomorrow.  We noticed an odd looking lump on her belly the other day.  We’re hoping it’s not cancer.

…Ditto on the thanks.  Same idea here too, but it’s called Remembrance Day, and is on Nov 11^th. to recall the end of WWI at 11:00 a.m. on 11/11/1918  The veterans, through the Royal Canadian Legion, sell poppies prior to Remembrance Day as a fund raiser, usually assisted by the local Cadet Corps.

…I think that that would work just fine. Are you in HO?, then the N wheels would do OK for the bridge, but Z if you need smaller.  I’ve got a jar full of N wheels if you need some, just let me know.

…Would a face mask help?  I used mine a lot this summer in the basement while I was at war with the ants and puffing diatomaceous earth around. I got it for the paint booth, but it’s useful all over. I also use it when I’ve got the table saw running in the basement. (Unfinished, and of course, no layout!! )

That’s really encouraging to know.  The “local” ones in Halifax are too far from the road, and the road is a major no stopping route anyway, so I haven’t been able to get any photos of them.  The glue has now dried enough for a test fit, so here’s the latest views. (I’ll separate the photos so the Forum software doesn’t throw them together; and the page here into super-size, like it did overnight with the two I posted yesterday and then separated in Edit, they came back together on their own! In fact any time I go back tothat page, the edit hasn't hed, despite my increasing the separation! )

 

 

 

 

 

Ed:  the really scary thing about that tractor drive on the cable ferry is the total lack of guards on the drive pulleys and belts, and the apparent total openness of all that to the public!
