Good Morning, Zoe - I'll have the Steph's Platter off Bill T.'s menu, please, and a cup of coffee, compliments of PC. Thanks, Phillip!

Dick, sounds like your RR made a good swap of trackage rights, for sure. Thumbs Up Now you get to start planning how to fill that extra room. Big Smile

By the way, Jeff - really like your 'eye in the sky' shots of your RR. Did you have to hire out the Goodyear blimp to get those done? Yeah!!

Ah, it's Friday!

(Even if we don't get to have that fun white stuff that some of our more Eastern and NOTB Diners have...Whistling)

Hope everyone has a warm spot to be today (maybe even with one of those German comforters like Jeff does). May none of you get too nasty of weather out your way. It looked from this morning's weather like Tom, Sue and our other Northwestern Diners need to watch out for some winds today (80-90 mph). Take care out there!

Prayers for healing, comfort and warmth today for those in need of it.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Morning folks!

I see PC has the coffee all perked up and ready to go!

Thanks Jim! The backdrop has the blue sky and initial mountains painted in, the next step is to add some touch ups to the foreground mountain ranges to show trees. Then I will add the transition scenery from the benchwork to meet up with the backdrop, still plenty of gaps between the two.

And look who the cat dragged in......howdy Dick!  Long time no see in the Diner! WOW!!!! You got a great deal on those two rooms, if they are adjacent can you knock out a part of the wall between them and make one big train room of the two?

Later.....

 Mornin'...........

OK Philip I'm up.............  Stop all the racket will ya..............Zzz

We got 4.2" of the white fluffy stuff here in the Finger Lakes overnight so I will fire up the gas burning snow shifter before I hit the road to have lunch with my son.

My sister called last night to con me into transporting her tree to her house and helping her get it set up straight.  This is a yearly ritual where I hold the tree while she gets out the vacuum to clean up any needles that fell off it while I brought it in the house.  While she is at it she rearranges most of the furniture to see how it will look once it is permanently screwed into the base.  Of course I am still trying to hold the tree up.  She will comment from time to time that the tree is not quite straight.  This takes about 3 hours to complete.  Back when I used to put up a tree, I could do the entire ritual in less than 15 minutes.  I also never would vacuum at that time as I could just wait a month till the tree came down and get it all then.  She was an Art teacher.... Need I say more?

Well the dark roast that Zoe brought me has started to take effect so I better get to doing something of value around here.  See you all later!

Good late morning folks, had quite an eventful couple of days. Guess I'll have a cheeseburger, thin, lettuce tomatoe and onion, order of sweet potatoe fries and a cup a coffe pleeeeez. and thank you.

Wed we had our annual Christmas potluck at church, and of course I ate to much. DinnerUnfortunately our toaster went down in a fizzle as I was toasting the last 2 slices of bread for the scalloped pineapple I was making (would have brought some in but they ate it all) and the wife doesn’t think a new one would count as her Christmas gift. Grumpy

Yesterday, as I was walking by the diner I peeked in and saw some black bean soup that Ryan brought in and that done flung a cravin’ on me so off to the Wally-mart I go because we didn’t have enough black beans to make it. Besides we needed a new toaster. I go in and hit the toasters, prefect, then the kitchen gadgets, Aaah a silicon spatula her rubber one is not the best anymore and she likes the silicon jobs. Grab it and off to the grocery side. Shopping done, not just black beans of course, you know how that is. Kinda like going to the hobby shop for ONE thing. Ha what a joke. Anyway, through the mile long checkout and outside . Unload bags into the truck, and looky there in the cart bottom, the spatula. Checked the receipt…nope, I didn't pay for itSign - Oops. Thought about it, nope just couldn’t do it. So like a salmon upstream I go back inside with my “stolen” spatula in hand. Should have put it in my coat pocket. Now here’s where it gets interesting,. Stopped by the Greeters. “Sir, you’ll have to take your returns to customer service.” “No, I didn’t pay for it “ I said. “Well, you need to take it to customer service even if you don’t have a receipt.” (Another greeter walks up) “ No it’s not paid for at all. I paid for my stuff and when I was unloading my bags I found this in the bottom of my cart and I need to bring this back in and….” “Oh, you just didn’t see it in your cart” said the second greeter. “Yes” I said. “Well just take it to customer service and they will put it back. Thank You sir” Sigh “No you don’t understand” I said ”I want it, I just didn’t pay for it, so I’m bringing it back in to pay for it.” A look comes over their faces like either they realize what I mean or something is hanging out of my nose. “So you didn’t pay for this before you left the store.” the first greeter says somberly. Uh oh, off to wally-mart prison I thought . “Look I just spent among lots of other things $7.00.……..FOR A CHICKEN! Not cooked, not even cut up. I’m not going to steal a $3 spatula. Can’t I just go over to one of those ever increasing in size lines, pay for this and go home?” I say calmly (except for the chicken part). “ Well of course and thank you sir” he said all smiles. But he still watched me the whole way. What an effort that was for a spatula. At least I can use it now with a clear conscience.

BUT, the soup was good. Chef

Hi all

I usually dont post in this column but since I dont want to create a double post in 2 forums posting a notice here is the next best option since eventually everyone seams to check in here Wink

Bad news: KB Toys files for bankrupcy and will be liquidating stock in the coming days

Heres the link to my original post on the GR forum

http://cs.trains.com/trccs/forums/t/143262.aspx

Like I said in the OP, while KB wasnt a major player in model trains, they do supply alot of other stuff like die cast cars that eventually can end up on our layouts, also Thomas nuts may find items, or if you still have Xmas shopping or are into RC cars or 1/18 die cast vehicles, etc.

So I'm just given you all a head's up, article stated that the sales should take place before Xmas so if you have a KB nearby, might be worth checking out to see what may be on sale in the coming days.

Later Vic

   Have fun with your trains

TMarsh, that was quite a story!  Strange how it seems to throw folks for a loop when you make it known that you want to do the "right" thing, huh?  And BTW, Ryan got me with those pics yesterday too.  Had to go swing by the local cajun resterant and get me some gumbo for lunch!

Hello everybody!

Lee .. that was really interesting about the backgorund of your fallen flag Lake Shore line.  Here is the LS&MS 4-6-0 I mentioned in my earlier post.  I think it is one of the better looking ten wheelers ever made. As I said, I tore apart my 1900 era layout due to moving. That was before I painted this locomotive and used it on the layout.

Vic ... thanks for stopping in the diner to tell us about KB Toys.  Feel free to visit more often. I like your posts in the main forum.

Todd .... I like that story.

DICK!   Glad to see you again. Please visit again soon.  Your train room situation reminds me of an old chewing gim commercial: "Double you pleasure, double your fun.............."

Happy Model Railroading!

Vic, I heard about KB Toys announcement on the radio into work this morning, thanks for the link too!

TMarsh, they need to add your name to the list of prospective sainthood, and glad that I inspired you to make some black bean soup too!

PC, now you got me wanting to make a batch of gumbo....and I just did finish eating a mess of Red Beans and Rice with Smoked Sausage....and a side of creamed spinach......

Ahem!... Uh,  Ray, PC - did I mention that I was an elementary art teacher for several years?EvilWink I think it's more likely a female thing about the vaccuuming and all. I never have taken that long to put up my tree (not even when I was married and we got the live trees). Now, I have a 4' apartment-sized one (green plastic), and when I put it up on my printer stand (box with the red and green throw) I used last year)\, I noticed some plastic needles on the throw...Oops

(No offense intended, Sue)

Dick, besides Ryan's suggestion on knocking down the walls, you could also put some tunnels in the walls where your tracks connect the two parts of the layout.

Jeff, I'd bet that Barney had that biplane upside down for his picture-taking of your RR. Good thing he didn't drop the camera... Smile,Wink, & Grin

Jerry, you'd better hide those sweet rolls before the Dr's. nurse gets there. Shock Of course, the damage may already have been done, eh? Is she supposed to do some tests, or draw some blood, or what? Good to hear you're continuing to make progress on your layout. Thumbs Up

Todd, I'm soooo sure that none of us have ever eaten too much at a church dinner, right folks? Whistling Hey, 'tis the season, huh (and January we all go back on the wagon or head for the gym)? On your Wally-World experience, I guess they are just not accustomed to customers who are honest anymore. And that's all I'm gonna say about that one (as he moves away from the SoapBox)

Vic, thanks for the heads-up! I'll have to go check if we have a KB's in town... Oh, shoot - Sad my closest KB store is in St. Louis (couple of hours drive away up the interstate).

I'll be settling down in the window booth with my beef stew now, and see who else comes in.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Garry,

Another interesting fact is that the tracks of the LS&MS were so flat they could take
advantage of large diameter drivers like your ten wheeler there ( nice looking loco by the
way).  Large diameter drivers = speed. Smaller diameter drivers = horse power.  That’s why
the major difference in a light mountain or pacific and a heavy is the heavy has smaller
diameter wheels.

Sawyer, I hope the MRR'ing mini-course surprises you with how it turns out (and that you convert a few students to MRR'ing, too!). Just give it your best shot and share what you know, and your enthusiasm might just be catching. Thumbs Up

I'm feeling a little better now b/c the career counselor explained the corses to the class. Now I just got to ask a few questions about it, lol.

Garry, I would have to look it up but if memory serves me correct: the Senator of Indiana wouldn’t allow the LS&MS to lay track near Pigeon River, so the LS&MS had to run from Toledo to Adrian to Chicago for a while until it assumed the Indiana Northern railroad.  The run from Toledo to Adrian was referred to as “the Old road” once the Airline yard was built in Toledo.  The Airline Yard allowed the LS&MS to run straight service from NY to Chicago.  The land from Elyria, OH to Chicago was so flat and had so many straight a ways the LS&MS 10 Wheelers could reach 105 MPH.  My Great Uncle Gilbert Soule was the tower master of Swan Creek Tower that controlled the junction of “Old Road” and”Airline Road”.

no the oldest standard gage RR in Michigan was the Michigan Southern.  I think the DT&I was older but it started as a narrow gage RR.

Just lemon water, thanks.

***Robby, that looks just like our Smitty cat.

Spent the day looking at carpet and found a perfect one for the master bedroom & sunroom. Also found a cheap neutral greenish tone carpet for the train room. Wife's idea to go green.

Still working on estimates for insulation so we know what a "fair" deduction should be (sinse the contractor had zero to do with that). I found two doors that need painting (they look like cra*) and one big smudge of a wrong color above another door. Wife wants me to deduct time for everything I've re-painted and/or fixed/installed/etc already. I'm not inclined to go that far unless the contractor gives us trouble with our own "re-figured - fair" deductions. Time will tell. Wife is really angry with him now. I just want him gone.

Tomorrow will be a beautiful day, so I'll be back to work on that deck. No "rain excuse" now. Cowboy Rob

Well, we are going to put up the pix for the purina mill/elevator this weekend after I iron out a few bugs in my system here---I also started on the ground work for the hillside that the mill straddles--sitting on both sides of mainline with spurs that are a bit warped.

Speaking of warped, on pg 126-127 of Greg McDonnell's coffee table book "PASSING TRAINS" are some really warbled tracks(exaggerated by telephoto lens) on a branchlineon/in the Notekeu Subdivision near Climax, SK.
