To all members - private messages (pm's)
Posted by selector on Friday, April 11, 2008 12:15 AM

At the bottom of each text box are two blue buttons, one for email and one for pm's.

The purpose of these two functions is to allow you and the poster an opportunity to discuss a subject that may be unrelated to the topic in the text box you are viewing, or to seek clarification or more information, without cluttering up the thread.  Long threads become a chore and difficult to follow, which doesn't serve the original poster well in many instances.  They also tend to wander off topic.

Recently there seems to be a desire to notify recipients that one of us has sent a pm or an email, which unfortunately does a pretty good job of being its own brand of clutter.  It would be really helpful if all users would enable receipt of emails in their profile page settings.  You probably will not want to enable email notification, so don't click on that last option!

This is being posted for one week in hopes that we can develop the habit of using these two functions more routinely, but it won't happen if many users don't have their profile settings in accordance with the requirement.  Please take the time at your earliest convenience to allow receipt of emails, and do get in the habit of dealing promptly with those who try to contact you from this forum.

As is always the case, if you have an unpleasant experience in any way, and feel it objectionable enough to want some refereeing, please notify one of us of the incident.  Use the "report abuse" function, also at the bottom of each post.

Thanks for your cooperation.
