Bachmann Spectrum 2-6-0? An early push
Posted by sparkyjay31 on Wednesday, April 9, 2008 6:50 AM

I know I'm starting this early as the Bachmann 2008 releases are just to hit the shelves.  But can we collectively respectfully request Bachmann for a 2-6-0 Spectrum?  I'd love to see it released at least dcc ready, but with the dcc and Tsunami would be a bonus ( I'd order mine now ).  The Mogul was huge up in this area ( the Boston and Maine ).  Sorry Roundhouse, your 2-6-0 is not "up to snuff" as long as a MRC sound decoder is installed.  So how about it?  There must be more Mogul fans than just me right?

How about a nice B-15 for example?

P.S. I did also post this on The Bach-Man's site...

I wouldn't mind seeing a Spectrum 2-6-0, that was the most common logging engine used in northern Minnesota.

BTW a few days ago some cities in that part of the state got up to 32" of snow.

An excellent idea.  The Spectrum line runs so well that it has become the operational core of my model railroad.  Example:  The Bachmann "Ma & Pa" 4-4-0 (#4 on my railroad) pulls the passenger train while brass "Ma & Pa" 4-4-0's from Alco models (#5 and #6 on my line) sit in the display case.  One of the brass models runs quite well, but not as well as the new Bachmann.  Similarly, Bachman Climax locomotives do the lion's share of work, while a PFM Climax is in the display case (it's quite noisy compared to the new ones).

Possibly they could do a Mogul with an option as to High Drivers or Low Drivers.  A lower-drivered model would adaptable to short line and logging uses.  They would likely select a specific prototype for the model overall, and I understand that, but a good-running, low-drivered 2-6-0 is lacking in HO.

A Spectrum 2-6-0 woiuld be a nice addition.  Especially if they offer it as DCC Ready.  Equiped or with sound would be OK as well but would mean I would have to pay more to strip out the junk decoder or sound and put in a decent working one.  I have the Spectrum 4-4-0 and it is a great little loco.  It ran like crap out of the box but after changing the decoder to a NCE, it runs beautifully!

Ray Seneca Lake, Ontario, and Western R.R. (S.L.O.&W.) in HO

We'll get there sooner or later!

Very good suggestion sparkyjay31, I believe that Bachmann should release a nice

Spectrum 2-6-0 Mogul DCC ready. I'm modelling Boston & Maine and beside expensive

and scarce brass steam models, one have to admit that good plastic B. & M. steam

engines are almost non-existent.

I wasn't sure what scale you were looking for but I found a few bachmann spectrum 2-6-0's.  I might be missing something though, since I'm new to the hobby.

2-6-0 Spectrums Maybe you can use your dealer to order some in.  I just use that site becuase you can browse by roadname and their search actually works.  Then I go and price check across all of the online places.

Yes, I would also like to see a Spectrum 2-6-0 as well.

I would suggest that your request for this engine be posted on the Bachmann site.

Those are HO3 Spectrums.  Nice looking though.  I'm looking for a 2-6-0 in HO.

You know I did that.  Just before I posted this one here.  As of right now I have not one response on that website forum.  Seems like everyone is over here!!!

I'll post a link to this thread so the "Bach-mann" can look in on the comments over here!

I have been to the Bachmann site and 21 people have read the post.

I would like one to go with my Richmond 4-4-0. I would like on for the same time period as the 4-4-0. I put a Micro-Tsunami in my 4-4-0 recently. I think Bachmann could do it as Roundhouse has a 4-4-0, 2-6-0, 2-8-0 all with the same basic dimensions, except for drivers. My Spectrum puts those other three to shame on my layout. I have to detail them more and new paint.

They are really On30 which is "O" Scale, Narrow Gauge. Big difference.

Further ruminations:   The Spectrum line has the 4-6-0, which is available with either 52" or 63" drivers, so that same mechanism could potentially be the basis of a 2-6-0.   For logging moguls, even smaller drivers would likely be desired, but the tooling costs have to be a major consideration for Bachmann.

For the Boston & Maine fans writing above, what was the driver size on the B&M Moguls, and was the axle spacing somewhat comperable to what we see on that model 4-6-0??  Could a credible B&M model be made atop that 63" driver mechanism?

In Minnesota logging railroads generally just bought second-hand mainline engines, so a 2-6-0 with say 52" drivers would be fine, even 63" would work if the model ran well at slow speeds. (A few logging railroads were common carriers and used 2-6-0's on passenger trains too!)

BTW, I'd like to see the Spectrum 4-6-0 be available with the older Stephenson "slide valve" operation rather than the more modern (Walschaert?) style available now. Same would be true for any future 2-6-0
