Around 13 or 14 years ago I painted a Tyco/Mehano "Chattanooga" Mike into the Southern 4501. I never really finished the project, since I couldn't afford the books with the pics of the prototype.
Now, thanks to Al Gore, I can find pics of the loco, via the internet.
I've learned I have more work to do.
What I really was wondering about...are the white trim stripes along the walkways, and the bottom of the tender, a safety thing, or just for looks? Same for the whitwall tires?
I know it's wrong in so many ways, but here's my unfinished 4501.
Until I took this pic, I didn't really notice the things like the shiny wheels, and the details like the white stripes.
It looked good to me, until I see the work some of y'all do.
Here's a pic of the real thing.

edit: I really have to work on my photography too!
Jake: How often does the train go by? Elwood: So often you won't even notice ...
THE SOUTHERN SERVES THE SOUTH.
Ah yes, 4501. The one steam engine my wife knows the number of. I have my 40th wedding aniversary this year and she never lets me forget the year I got her up at 5AM and drove to Cincinatti with her to see the engine on her birthday as a newlywed. I learned early on that was not a good birthday present. If I am not mistaken the engine was never painted that way in service so I would say the painting is strictly for show and doesn't follow the prototype.

You are partially correct. In everyday steam freight service the 4501 was one of your regular "big black and ugly" steam locomotives. However in the 1960s when the Southern Started their steam excursion program she was painted in the Southern's classic Sylvan Green passenger paint sceme to harken back to the days of the glossy green Southern Passenger Locomotives of the past. All but one sadly are gone. And by the time of the excursion program the last Southern Passenger loco was in the Smithsonian. So the Green Passenger scheme is correct for depicting this engine in Excursion Service.
By the way, Exellent paint job on the loco. Looks fantastic.
Carknocker....that's sort of what I figured, but had not confirmed. I need to touch up the white on the walkways, as it has weathered itself some over the years, and add the white to the tender and cab. Asthetically, I like it better without the white on the tender, though.
BMRR...I agree, that is a pretty color scheme!
nbprr...I hope you bought her breakfast at least!
Master...I knew it was the excursion theme when I did it. That's why I painted the "heavies" to match. Plus I figured if I screwed up a $10 loco, I wasn't out much!
Thanks for the kudos, guys! I wasn't fishing for those, but they are appreciated.
I still need to do a bit more work on it for sure!
