Cleaning after Gleaming
Posted by jellybean on Friday, March 21, 2008 6:10 PM

I spent the month of December Gleaming the track, which was a real treat. I then spent the last 3 months ballasting and doing scenery including some plastering which now makes all my shiny track look like......well you know. What would be the best way to clean the glue and plaster residue from the track? A bright boy is definitely out of the question.
Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

I use a small block of pine that's big enough to span both rails.  Rub it back and forth as you would do with sandpaper. Does the job without scoring the rails.

Hi, Jellybean.Did the same thing. I went over the newly ballasted track with a chunk of cork roadbed and it seemed to work just fine.Do it a couple of times. It took off the gunk OK.

I'll gleam the new track AFTER the ballast next time.Live and learn.

Hi,

I agree with the wood rub and/or an alcohol rub, but the real problem is the plaster.  Hopefully you don't have much of it or you colored your plaster as you mixed it (one of the better scenery ideas).  Otherwise, it often comes down to picking and chiseling!
