refill, please & thanks!

Geez...had to put down a young pygmy goat today. We banded it several days ago and then it vanished. Today I found it in a pasture in a permanent seizure like condition, obviously near death. Burried it deep, not knowing the exact cause. Haven't seen that fox in some days now..hmmm!

Still debating using my train funds from selling those vintage articulated locos (and other items) to buy a fancy new Athearn Bigboy. Just can't seem to justify buying anything right now. Wife thinks I should go ahead and get it. I'm also finding it difficult to get back to the easel as well. Guess I'm just tucker out still. OK, if I whine again, someone just tap my head with a hammer.Dunce [D)] We have MUCH to be thankful for.

Hope everyone is doing well tonight. Going to go veg infront of the TV awhile. Nice to have satelite hooked up again. Cowboy [C):-)] Rob

Evening Gang: I got the west corral cleaned out. It took 5 trailler loads, about 25 cu yds to do it. I got to the basement for a bit tonight and started cleaning up the layout. It is covered with saw dust, dirt, and stuff from the remodel up stairs. I thought about covering it too late so just let it catch the stuff. Since I don't have scenery it vacumns up easy.

The kids are coming up to go to bed so I have to get off.

Good Night All

Looks Good!

I got my Railcamp stuff in the mail today. I get a tour of Amtrak's Wilmington+Bear Shops in Delaware, 30th St Station in Philly, rides behind steamers out of scranton, a tour of the restoration shops, I get to couple the GP9 to a freight car, and driver the GP9...

I'm a happy camper! Really!

Evening all,

Just another day in the office: http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2131469070029441264ISbFMy?vhost=rides

This and the next 8 or so pictures are what happen when a recreational vessel and a freighter are involved in an accident. I don't have pictures of the freighter to share, but I hear there was a small scratch on the freighters anchor.

Rob, sometimes you need to have fun, and if I remember right you should always listen to your wife so go buy it, LOL J  I hope your FIL is doing better.

Jeff, that was nice of you, not sure why it didn't clickable when I posted it.  You might have to fix this one...

Dick, my insurance company just asks what it's worth is.  I tell them I want the trains insured for $10,000.00 and poof, done.  I do have a picture inventory of everything, and I keep the insurance at a replacement level.   So far they are really good and don't ask me many questions when I have a claim. That makes sense to load the bridges like that during a flood.

Railroadnut675  The plan looks good.  Have you drawn it at 100% yet?  If you like Amtrak FP-40's email me I have 2 PROTO 1000 sitting on the shelf here I doubt I will use on the steam layout.

Good night all & try to keep dry!

Good Evening Diners!

It seems that the weather certainly hasn't been co-operating anywhere this month. Those floods in Iowa, fires in California and it just seems to go on and on. We had a tornado watch here today which is unusual for us. At least it seems the rain has stopped but it certainly is cool with temperatures in the low 60's. I haven't been out to the boat once since launching so I guess I'm literally a fair weather sailor.

Rob, we're all thinking of you and I agree with some of the others who said you should go for that Challenger. We all need a little boost once in a while and I think you could likely use one more than most. Sorry to hear about the goat.

Dick, that was some haul at your LHS! I stopped into mine on Thursday to pick up a new decoder for my PK2 0-6-0. I had put in a Soundtraxx LC unit especially designed for this loco but pulled it out this week. It turns out that it is old technology and while it worked OK, the hum from the motor was terrible. I tried adjusting the CV but it didn't help much. I have found out that I'm not alone in finding out the hard way about motor hum with that decoder. I'm going to try one of those new Digitrax units with the Soundbug. I also picked up an Intermountain box car kit that looks like will be a good challenge, well it will be for me.

Tom, Hope you have some fun playing tomorrow at that retreat. While I don't play, my wife is a good pianist and she too hates those electric keyboards. I've heard you mention that you have music loving cats. We have 2 dogs(Westies) who are much the same. Whenever my wife plays the piano Jamie runs and lays under it which I find amazing as it is loud under there. He especially likes Chopin.

I'd really like to see some summer heat here soon as our summers are so short, we'll soon be out of time. Oh well, maybe next week.

Won't be long until it's tomorrow so I'd better sign off.

CN Charlie

Good morning.

It's a pleasant 73 here under a clear sky. Too bad it won't stay that way. We're expecting a high in the low 90's and a better than average chance of thunderstorms later.

Maybe I can get some work done on the layout today. I still have to ballast the two tracks along the back side. Fun, fun.

Hello....

The pictures below were forwarded to me from Gus. His friend in Iowa had emailed the pictures to him. The loaded grain cars were placed on the bridge to keep it stable as the high water strikes the bridge with floating logs, etc.  The bridge is on the Des Moines River.

Good morning all,

The weather here south of Boston is absolutely beautifull this morning. Too bad I'll be spending the day inside.

Thought I'd just stop in quick while taking a break from the mountains of paperwork for that dreadful audit. Thankfully, the schedule C and milage log is the only parts the state is interested in.

Things are going well here, hope to be able to do some catch up on all the goings on with the Diner crew.

Been preoccupied lately, her name is Linda, quite a gal and we have so much in common.

Monday eve, we have an official operations, hope I'm able to run some trains or work the yard.

Hope everyone has a great day.

Mornin, coffee n a couple sweet rolls please Janie.

Luckily we only got .6 of rain yesterday, some of the others around us got 1.5 plus.

TODAY:

Early Shower or T'Storm South, Then Becoming Partly Cloudy & Less Humid.  High 83.  West-Northwest Wind 6 mph.
TONIGHT:
Mostly Clear with Fog Patches.  Southwest Wind 5 mph.  Low 60.

Trains are running out back again, still under slow orders, but their moving finally.

We got word on Debs, Uncle and 2 cousins down by Lawrenceville [where the levy broke], they're ok, no damage, but 2 other cousins there weren't so lucky. Both families are ok, John had 3 ft of water in his house, Amy got 8 ft in hers. Not what she needed with the way are things going lately? Her 2'nd husband to be, died in a coalmine accident last week [1'st one drown in the Embarras river 3 years ago]

DICK,

If you think painting those electric towers is something. You need to see them cutting trees back from them with helicopters with big buzz saws hanging down, it's something. Marathon used them to trim trees on the pipelines thru here a couple years ago.

GARRY,

Back in the 20's [I think it was] the Wabash was washing out the center pier of the NYC bridge at Terre Haute. To save it and divert the flow some, they dumped a steam engine over the side. It saved the bridge and when the rivers down real low, you can still see it from the bridge [with permission of course].

ROB,

You folks have sure had a time of it lately with everything. Keeping ya'll in our thoughts for better days.

 LEE,

Looks like that ship was a bit hard on the boat, hope no one was hurt.

Best get back to chores, I'm having to repot the flowers on the back porch, thanks to a coon that keep digging them out for the 3'rd time [he hit the neighbors last week]. I set the trap Wed night, no coon, but I did a stray cat from down the road. No luck last night, maybe tonight I'll get lucky and we can have smoked coon next week. Also, the &%#$ tried to get in the house through the screen door Thur.

Hope ya'll has a gooden, thoughts n prayers for all in need and there's a bunch, with all the weather n fires lately.

Garry: That's a neat trick, loading the bridge like that. Adds a lot of extra weight without having to add to the structure.

Nothing to do with the flood, but Jeff might like the picture. Another one forwarded from Gus's friend. Do you see many of these sharp looking units in your territory, Jeff? If so, keep your camera with you if you don't mind.

in an Undecorated mug, please & thanks!

***Garry, cool photo of that bridge. I'm amazed the weight of the cars makes that much difference with such a mass of water flowing into it.

***Jerry, nice shot. What is the small area with water on the far left hand side of the photo?

***inch, sorry to hear about your cousins who were not so lucky with that flooding.

Wife is on the way to take her mom to the hospital as I type. Her dad called a bit ago (I didn't know he could still use the phone) and described her condition. Wish my wife wasn't stuck doing all of this right now. Her sisters both have children so the burden falls on her I guess.

Did morning critter rounds and everything else is OK on the ol' farm today. Cowboy [C):-)] <---(forced smile)  Rob

On a train related brite note, the dead & dying shrub that grew all along the carport has a ton of potential trees (I think). I cut off a few samples to share with you and get some oppinions on what type of trees these might make? Could be used for "fill" trees.

Also, N scale bottom row & HO top row OR...???

And here is part of a little metal train I dug out of the ruins. Couldn't find any of the other cars, but will save these for the wife's future garden:

I hear thunder. YeeHaw! Rob

Hello Diner crew, Can only stay for a moment.  Cherry coke float, please Chloe.

Our prayers and sympathies to all who have been affected in any way with all the terrible disasters that have ranged at will from one coast to the other.  The Scouts who lost their lives in Iowa, really burdens my heart.  My wife and I worked in scouting for many years and have four boys as well. Cannot fathom the greif those families must have at this point.

Also in our prayers are Rob and JR. and their families with the loss of their homes.  So very glad to hear no one was injured, nor live stock either.  Rob, what happened to the little goat the other day??

Rob.That looks like fine armatures for some trees, keep us posted how that works out when you have time.  Also how soon are they going to be able to start the re-build??

Jerry:    Does that train crew block that crossing often to take a swim in that pond or get a coke from that stand there??

Inch:      Give  our best to your Deb in regard to her loss  and to Amy as well, I'm sure she will need much consolling.

Jeffery:    CN Charlie and I still don't see those trailer spaces for us in that park and you never told us how far the fishing hole is from there.  Glad to hear the report on the feet and eyes.

Would someone please post JP's email address again.   I searched for it today but didn't long enough to come up with it.    Thanks in advance.

I have an undecorated GP-40 here and today I bought off E-Bay, a set of Bi-centenial decals for a WP GP-40.  Have had pretty good luck in the past painting two GP-20s one orange and one pearlman green. But they were solid colors so this will be a challange getting the red and blue colored stripes on it properly.  Any pointers would be appreciated.  I hate decalling.

Well the wife thinks we should go out to the lake for the evening. Don't know what that will be like as it has rained here for the last three days.  Keep the rubber boots on CN Charlie.

Tom W:   Glad you are enjoying your creeper and sharing it as well.  I want to know, when your garage door is closed can you walk between it and your layout??  In the pics it seems real close together.

Well, that float was good and if I stayed longer I would have another and that wouldn't be any good for my girlish figure. Laugh [(-D]Big Smile [:D]Laugh [(-D]

Have a great week-end all and keep smiling even though it is tough sometimes. It will help you through your problems.

Prayers and blessings to all in need.

Afternoon, Janie - I'll have a root beer float, please.

Thanks!

Lee, how's the vacation going so far? Did you get any rail or bus passes to go do some serious railfanning? Photos to come? Huh, huh, huh? That one boat does look the worse for the wear...

The weather here is not bad today; a little warm and humid, but the front's gone. (YAY!) I was at a 'Boys and Their Toys' rally/food thing Friday, that they put on at church each year (past couple of years, anyway). About 6:30 or so, we're getting things taken down and moved from the parking lot into the church (no, not the trucks and cars and bikes...) before the main part of the storm gets there from west of town, and one part of the front goes through with a dark, way too sharply-defined line a few thousand feet (maybe more) above, passing over us. Wasn't sure if my car would have hail dimples when we came back out or not, but fortunately it didn't. Yeah!! [yeah] That was a dark line of something, all right. From the weather reports on the late news, the worst of the front passed to our south again this time.

Rob, that's a tough call about the big trees near your home. I like them around for the shade, too, but as you say, if they came down, could be a mess (tm), all right. Sorry to hear about your FIL's trip to the ER again. Sorry to hear about the pigmy goat, too. One good thing for you on the house rebuild might be, the builders and contractors may have more reasonable prices, and you'll probably get better attention (due to fewer jobs competing for their time). One person's loss, another's gain, I suppose. On your Athearn Big Boy (Challenger?), given what you've been enduring lately, it might not be a bad idea to go ahead and get it (especially since you have the CFO's permission). Tell Barbara to give you an extra hug from all of us, okay? And don't be bashful about letting us know if there's something we can do.

Garry, that's a different way to try to safeguard those bridges in Iowa. But hey, if it works, sounds better than having to rebuild the bridge.

BridgeTom, how'd you survive the outdoor Mass (and the electronic mushboard)? Wink [;)] Got that pizza ordered yet for dinner?

Oh, (former Latin student here) I learned it as:

"In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spritus Sancti. Amen."

And RRNut, you're getting to be a regular 'lunch date' for those ladies...Whistling [:-^] The track plan looks good - will you have hills, scenic divider or such on the layout (later)? You might need a LHS run like Dick's to increase your rolling stock some (or how much of that do you have now?).

Paul, it is good that you don't have scenery, trees, and stuff to try to get dust off of. Bet you're glad to have some of the corral stuff out now, too, even if you are tuckered out.

Alex, your Railcamp sounds like the real deal, with all those things you'll be getting to do! Thumbs Up [tup]Bow [bow]

Lee, I might want to know your insurance company's info (not sure that I have that much stuff, but heck, at replacement prices, that might be more than I think). Sounds much better to work with, than some companies I've worked with in the past. Yeah!! [yeah]

Bob K. - best wishes on your audit, and don't get too distracted with Linda (though that sounds like it could be more interesting...)Wink [;)].

Inch, hope you catch that pesky raccoon. They can be a chore to catch and/or get rid of, I've heard. They love to get into things, so make sure your doors are always locked at night or when you're gone. Shock [:O]Whistling [:-^]

Earlier today, I went by Hobby Lobby and the LHS. At HL, I got a flag frame (one you put the folded flag in after a funeral) for my Dad's flag. I need to vaccuum the flag good before I put it in the frame (my apartment tends to draw dust, it seems). I also got a couple of Woodland Scenics figures (Policemen and another - I think it was the people and pets one). At the LHS, I got an Accurail Santa Fe 50' single door boxcar kit, and some epoxy (for putting together a few WS white metal kits). I still need to go see about some lumber (probably at Lowe's; sorry, Dick, we don't have a Home Depot here...) for the next part of the layout.

Here's what I have planned for now - adding a 3' X 3' corner module, and the 2' X 4' that I already have the plywood for:

Have to give up my track next to the enginehouse (2-track, in the existing sections), where the work train is currently located, to get a second access track to the turntable and roundhouse. I'd debated about leaving that work train track unconnected to the turntable and run another track off the main, but then the turntable seems isolated from the other service area. Any suggestions on the addition?

Getting later in the afternoon, so I'd best get going for the rest of my errands. Thanks for the RBF, Janie!

Prayers for those in need of healing, protection and peace. Take care of yourselves and those you love.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

refill, please & thanks!

Picked up some more twiggies (future trees) on the way back from the mailbox. Should be able to find a couple hundred of them. Still need to figure out what approach to use. Plan on painting them with acrylics first to give them a some strength. Would be great if I could produce a bunch of them on the cheap. But until I have an actual layout to put them on, will set them aside after base-coating them.

Spoke with the builder today and he has the house plan all drawn up. He will have them printed out Monday and ready to submit. That's pretty quick work.

***Johnboy, we do not know what the goats problem was. It went missing for a few days after we did the "bander" thing and when it returned, it was in a permanent seizure-like state.

Wife is still at the hospital waiting on a GI specialist to see her mom. Sounds like a lot of bleeding (and my wife never exagerates), so this could be something bad. She will be admitted and this will be an all nighter for sure. Dang!

Evening Gang: I'm early because if I don't get in now I may not be able to later. The daughter and her husband are using the bedroom.

Rob I'm sorry to hear that your MIL is having more trouble. All this has to be rough on Barbara. Please give her my best and it wouldn't hirt if you gave her a hug. The tree armatures look good. Remember that trees arn't real dependent on scale like the man made stuff.

Good evening, long hot, humid day today, rains to south, rains to north, rumbles of thunder in the distance, nothing here in central MA .....yet! Of course tomorrow the whole family will be here for a cookout as well as my brother from CT, and it doesn't look like a nice day at all. So the awning is up over the deck and we will make the best of it for Father's Day.

CN CHARLIE: Many of the older Decoders do not have back EMF, so you get a lot of hum. The newer decoders have emf feature and this makes a big difference. I sent off to Tony's Trains in VT, a list of all my locomotives and asked them to list what decoder they recommend for QSI and Soundtraxx. I just received a complete list yesterday in email with decoder models and speakers recommended.

LEE: So the little boat tried to take on a freighter huh !!! Not too smart. That is a great idea to get MRR equipment insured. I think I will call "Snoopy" ( Metropolitan ) on Monday to get a rider for our  Home Insurance personal belongings for MRR addition. The rider shouldn't cost too much I would think.

MIKE: I think we saw the same pictures on the TV news here. They have had many TV news photos of the flooding in the Midwest. My wife thought that she read where the grain car idea didn't work and bridge let go, I hope not !

BOBK: The sun was out here in the central part until about 9am, then it clouded over with a thin hazy sky. No rain yet here though by 7pm.

DUKE: Guess what we had for desert tonight?? That's right !! Strawberry-Rhubarb pie, both from the garden. AND.........French Vanilla ice cream on top, right from the local farm here. Yes, we do still have one nice Dairy farm left here thank God, family run since 1934 with a big herd of Holsteins.

ROB: At least a few items survived, I hope you find more to salvage.

Later,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! hello, Got back from South Carolina today after a twi day drive. Yes, I got some time to drive too. We saw the Hunley, and the nearby East Cooper and Berekeley GP something. I'll get pics up later. It was clean, but they looked like they had or were pulling the track up around it. Next was Patriot's Point, home of the Yorktown , (Aircraft carrier) and Clagamore, a sub. Not bad, but expect a lot of walking and don;t go in the summer. Everything is big on the aircraft carrier, except the air conditioner. Shockingly, the black boilertube of a sub nearby was actually cooler than the Yorktown. Didn;'t make it into the Coast Guard ship or Destroyer, due to time, and I made it as far as the entracne before hiting a wall of heat. Next day was magnmolia Plantation, (we skipped the house) and Drayton Hall. Fort Sumter was Tuesday and after that we went to Charleston for some walking through Slave's Market and the Aquarium, and a Ghost Tour.  Wednesday was Nathan Russell and Aiken Rhett House, and I got to see the Silver Meteor slip out of North Charleston. That day also gave me Port Utilities Railroad #2001. There is somee train at the Visitor's Center, part of an old railroad, the first in South Carolina, but for reasons I won't divulge, I was unable to find out more about the steam loco inside. Don't know what it was. Will send e-mail and ask. This would be the last train stuff for the day. We rode a carriage tour, then got ready to come home. And here I am!

Inch, neat shots, for all the pain it's caused. Missed us here, onl;y 4 inches. Heard some places in Indy got 11.5 inches. I was sweating during it.

Rob: Sorry to hear about the fire, I'm noticing a trend, I dun like it. Did your layout, and Barb's HO trains fair well? Glad to hear your alroght. Who says Superheroes can't save real life,

Garry: Load the bridge? Neat trick

Tom: I hope your having fun? Did you adopt the Turntable yet?

Others: Sorry I missed the posts.

I got;s a BL2 in paint to get finito. I like the scheme, now I need decals.

Jeffrey:    CN Charlie and I still don't see those trailer spaces for us in that park and you never told us how far the fishing hole is from there.  Glad to hear the report on the feet and eyes.

Give it time. I have to decide where the road access will be first. I also have to get some signs that are associated with parks. If I can't find any that are affordable I'll make some.

Rob: Picked up some more twiggies (future trees) on the way back from the mailbox. ........ Plan on painting them with acrylics first to give them a some strength. ..... will set them aside after base-coating them.
Just a suggestion, but if you want to make them stronger (I'm assuming they are a bit brittle?) you might want to consider dipping them in a dilute mix of white glue and water (maybe 50-50) and hanging them on a line to dry.  You can paint them later.  But I think the dilute glue mix will do more to strengthen them than simply painting.

I'd also consider making the original paint coat a simple rattle can of medium gray paint.  You can highlight parts of the trunk with acrylics later if you want some color variation.  But since most of the armature will be covered with foliage there's not too much point in spending a lot of time painting.

Just one data point.
