Well it's an end to a weary, stressed out day. I don't get stressed out very easily, but it's crunch time and the owner has beat up just about everyone on the project. I guess it finally was my turn. They sold their other house and now have to move into this one I've been working on since Jan. I feel like telling them to stay with relatives and let us finish and do the final touches right, not rushed. Oh, well not much I can do.
Philip: I can tell things must be way better now... your talking about trains again.
Dick: That loaded CSX centerbeam out of Stoughton made a lot of matchsticks for sure. Can you imagine if the commuter took to the siding instead! This happened only a 1/2 mile from my uncle's house. Here's a link to info http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2008/03/26/freight_car_rams_commuter_train_injuring_150/ Nice to hear from you. How's the skiing been? We did have another great show, and I still retain my nickname "Crash".
Paul: I guess you can get a lot of house for your $$$ down there. Something like that here around Boston would be $700K and up. That price may get you a 2 BR condo in these parts.
I really need to head off to bed... Rarely ever get wiped out like this.
Have a good evening,

Good evening....it was actually shirt sleeve weather this afternoon. We had a dusting of snow last night that covered the ground, by 9am it was all gone, and the temp hit 54F by 3pm.
Finally got to LHS ( Tuckers ) today and lunch at the Steaming Tender. They now have an all you can eat Italian Buffet on Wednesdays, $9.95 plus a few other nice changes. The haul at the LHS included: A Maine Central RS2 (P1k), NYC 46' usra Gondola, Ford F-850 Stakebed, '54 Ford F350 NYC RR MoW Pickup, 2-ME C-83 #6 RH Frogs, and Brian Solomon's latest book North American Railroad Bridges , this book is really nice, I highly recommend it guys, and Classic Trains Steam Glory 2 ( great article and pics and stats on Berkshires !!!! )
PC: Very happy to hear that your family is all home together and doing well!!!
HOOPLE: Looks like the BB will be running on your layout soon, I hope the radii is at least 22".
SUE: Great job on the riverbed, very impressive work!!I really like it!
JIM: How is the bank search coming along? Credit Union may be another good option, mine has been great for 28 years, they are top notch for customer service.
MIKE: You guys have been really getting hammered in the midwest, the local TV news shows the action there quite often. Now we have cold air banked up to the north and real warm weather coming up from the south and your are right on the battle line between the two temp extremes....that is real bad news Mike.
SCOTT: Good to hear from you Scott!!! Glad to hear that you are doing well, and thanks for the photos...have you made Engineer yet?
BOBK: What happened on the commuter line in Canton yesterday??? One single flat car, loaded with lumber comes off the siding and rolls down the mainline and crashes head on into the commuter train with hundreds injured ??!!! Someones butt is going to be in the fire for not setting the brake on the flatcar, and an open switch to the mainline ???? Wow !!!
I have the "swallows" tonight, that usually means a throat infection/cold is attacking, so I am off now to get a ginger brandy otr. See you guys tomorrow,
Evening Gang: Not much new today. We went and looked at a house for the daughter and family. It is a 2140sqft house on 5.8 acres. The lot has a stream on the east and back that is real nice. the house is in Weatherford but is unrestricted with an agriculture tax exemption. They could have cattle, horses or any live stock the want. Unfortunatly the house is not at all liked by Lara, my daughter. It's a fairly new house built in 2000 but it has cheap doors and hardware and a bad paint job in places. The asking is $217,000 which isn't too bad if the house was decent.
On a sad note from Milwaukee. The old Coast Guard station was demolished yesterday. They had been trying to save it for some time but just couldn't get the funding together. It was a real classic built 92 years ago.
Well I'm going to head out.
Good Night All

Glad that everyone is home now, time to rest for sure!
And I'll a Surf and Turf too!
To answer your question, the ballast spreader works good, I just have to run it across the track a few times to get the amount of ballast I want between the ties and on the outside slopes. I still have to come back between the rails and on the outside slopes with a 1" wide paint brush to even out the loose pieces of ballast and get them where I want them before spraying and soaking it with some wet water and then the diluted white glue.
Cheers,
Alright everyone! Line up!

I'm buying!

The arm cast comes off Friday. His youth group at church meets on Thursday nights, so I expect he'll want to go and work that thing with the girls while he can.

Also, big boy isn't here yet. I found a video of one on youtube... Posted on my last post.
Morning all--
Philip: So glad for you, to have the family back home. Continued prayers from here for your wife and son.
Nothing much new on the home front here--I've got my 94-year old mother this week, but that's no problem, since she's very happy sitting in her favorite chair spoiling the cats, reading some of her Romance novels (Whew! Ever read one of those? Back when I was a kid, you'd have to get them in a Plain Brown Wrapper, LOL!) and watching every channel on DTV that shows "The Golden Girls". We've gone through all my Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, so yesterday evening I put on "A Ticket To Tomahawk"--really cute little Railroad Western from the 'fifties--and she got a kick out of it. She wants to watch it again today. Sure beats "The Sound of Mucus, er, 'Music'". I'll take her back to Nevada City on Friday, after the electrical contractors are finished.
Other than that, I'm still puttering around with the engine facilities in Deer Creek and thinking seriously of putting a ballasted deck on the Deer Creek Viaduct. Still finding little pieces of wood embedded in the scenery from that garage roof job last Fall. The Basket-Case Yellowstone was tried out yesterday afternoon and runs pretty darned good, by golly! Soon as the PSC detail parts get in from Montana, I'll get it all finished up and hauling some PFE reefers. Like my other two, it's a real team of oxen as far as pulling power. Ah, Yellowstone Heaven. Only 15 more to go, LOL!
Well, got to give Mom her mid-morning pills and head back out to the garage.
Oh, PS--the chocolate Easter Bunny is History.

Paul, the Hulets have been saved. The local historical society saved one Hulet on Whiskey Island, the RR sold it to them at scrap price and sits disassembled just south of where they once stood waiting for funds to re-assemble it. Very impressive even in its storage condition! The taconite loader (called a pellet loader) was originally in Lorain, OH and was moved to Whiskey Island. The large lakers drop off the pellets to Whiskey Island then smaller freighters move it to the steel mill (shuttle runs) at the head of navigation. RR hoppers transport pellets to Lorain, Pittsburg, Youngstown, or where needed.
I don't remember who rebuilt that unit, I was a member of the Mid-West Historical Society for a few years and to make money for the club we rebuilt switchers and leased them to local industry. Some of our switchers can be seen in service around the Cleveland Flats area. We have a Mikado, B&O round house, several passenger cars, and a RS-3 (that just broke down and can't pull off the turn table). Several of our passenger cars have been in (recent) Hollywood movies.
That ISG switcher works the scrap yard and doesn't see much action at the blast furnace.
I think Ohio State would have been a better choice of marching bands.......

Well good morning everyone!
Yes, I got them home last night. The wife and boy got to sleep in their own beds, and man, did they crash! They're very happy to be home though. I think my son is about done with hospitals for a while, and so is my wife. They still have lots of follow-ups, but thats nothing. I keep telling him (teasing, ya know) that he looks like a house fell on him or that he's some kind of horrible accident victim. I mean, he broke a finger a week before the surgery, so his hand is in a cast, and now both legs are in casts, and they're all big casts, so he really pulls on your heart when you look at him.
Looks like the weather is getting warmer around here. Might even hit low 60's on Sunday! Today: mixed clouds & sun - high: 58
Well, I have some work to get to, so I'll be off. Later!

OK, I'll do it for you.......
Edit: It seems that while I was posting so were several others! And they brought friends! Friends with instruments!
PC: This is wonderful news, Praise the Lord!...and prayers continue, as you know.
Garry: Sorry I don't have the band yet, and most of these came from PC in the first place (IIRC), but here we go...
Ryan: Congratulations! Way to go!

Morning, Diners! Zoe, I'll have a glass of Ed's OJ, cup of coffee, and a helping (small) of the breakfast buffet, please. Thanks, Garry!
(As Tony the Tiger would say) Grrrrrrrreaaaaaat! to hear that your son is home, PC! And Zoe, you say there's someone outside the door for PC and his son?
PC, tell your son a big back home from the crew here at the Diner! Grrrrreaaat! to know he's back home. (Just make sure the benchwork under the foot of his bed is sturdy - I understand those casts can weigh a bit... Maybe some 1X3 L-girders might be in order )
Sunny and windy here today in Cape G. - s'pposed to reach the lower 60's (F) today, with breezes around 5 mph currently. Chance of showers today, tomorrow and Friday, but stopping for the weekend, before it resumes on Monday. Nice that the rain gets the weekend off, huh?
Bob K., that train pile-up looks (I suppose?) very prototypical, huh? Yeah, it'd be Murphy's Law that it would happen with 100 people there to catch it all. How long will it take for the inspectors to get done, before trains can resume rolling?
RT, good that you have the tests done (except for the waiting). Hopefully, they'll get back to you fairly quickly on the job now.
Haven't heard any shouts, so either the Big Boy hasn't arrived, or else Hoople's been too busy trying it out so far. Mark, we expect a review soon, with photos, y'know?
Paul, that's a heap of fertilizer in the winter lot - a downside of farming, huh? Will the cattle keep the grass trimmed down enough from here out, that you don't have to mow as much?
Well, I'd better finish up my breakfast for now - got a 9 a.m. client coming (I hope - Monday, I only had three and none of them showed.
Blessings on your Wednesday (and the rest of the week),
Jim in Cape Girardeau
Morning folks!
Glad to here that PC jr and the family are back safe and sound at home again.
I got good news, I lost 10 1/2 lbs. since eating healthier and exercising. My BMI index reading still says I'm obese for my weight and height, getting closer to just being overweight though. I need to be 170 to be considered a healthy weight.

Flashwave: I will have to try that. I think I'll head to the LHS, see if they have a decoder for the beasty, and see if there is any 22 radius curves by atlas, along with some rail joiners.
Speaking of ze beasty... Found a video of someone elses big boy, and I realized that the sound is magnificient, and the looks of the big boy... Ooh, when is mine going to come... http://youtube.com/watch?v=GQgeqVT7rxs

Just stopping in to say, glad that your son is home, Philip. I will check in tomorrow.

Anything is possible if you do not know what you are talking about.
Hello everybody ....
Lee ..... The switcher photos almost reminded me of the bi-centential colors in the mid-1970's. it's hard to imagine how a switcher could remain looking so clean in the steel mill. Fancy painting for sure!
Bobk ... Thanks for showing the club's blast furnace. Nice weathering. Now you know the backdrops I used are not tall enough for the balst furnace. you may have noticed I crop off the top of it in my pictures. It's a huge structure. Mine has flickering lights under the main furnace that do a good job of simulating the hot metal. The roof over the main furnace can be lifted to see.
Jerry ... You asked how long I've been building the current layout. It's about six years so far. The dreaded non-model-railroad-stuff often delays progress.
Mark .. I'm glad the big boy is arriving. We'll have to have a celebration for that, too.
Happy Model Railroading.

Good to see PC Jr. is free of hospital-land...
I know it isn;'t right, but your describing engines climbing up too sharp a radius. A friend of mine;s test oval is 15 inch radiius, and his longer engines (GP ## etc) do what your describing. They climb the rail, get on top, and derail. On the engines: Check and make sure you don;t have something like the brake piston (diesel) binding up and preventing the truck from making the turn. Another friend had one of those, it climbed and derailed, and once I popped off the break cylinder, it was just fine.
I know that can't be it though as it;s a new problem... Try running the trains the other way. Does it do it then?
EDIT: I rered the post. It may yet be that the Challenger is just not able to take an 19 inch radius, despite the advertisements. Try the above and then get eye level wit the engine and watch the drive sets. Id; set the engine on crawl. See if you can spot which set is doing it, and what it might be catching on.
Disclaimer:The above is written by a guy who has worked with a similar problem, and has NO idea what he's doing.
PC: Glad to here he's home, I hope it all goes well. Hate to bwe the speller of bad woes, and it;s great to have everyone back together, but I just hope nothing is too soon. (If that makes any sense at all)
