Choices, choices, choices. Toss up between my BLI 2-8-2 or my Spectrum 2-10-2. I like the BLI for sound and I like my 2-10-2 for it's hauling/pushing ability.

You have said it right. Choices, choices, choices. How can some of us who have collected trains for over forty years choose just one. With so many sound options and details offered recently, it is impossible to pick one.
My thought is: I never met a steam locomotive I didn't like.
Yes, we got see some glamorous steam locomotives and some real freight hogs, but each one had a sort of personality that made it impossible for us who watched them not to like each and every one.
Our HO model steam locomotives are much the same to me. I like steam and tolerate certain diesels that only ran on certain name trains, like the Californina Zephyr and the High Level El Capitan.

Yep. 's called Douglas Fir.
I had a word with the old gal when she hesitated at the lip of the trestle on her first encounter. She then closed her eyes and stepped onto it.
Now she actually likes the experience.
Thanks for your kind encouragement, Dave.

For looks alone, I enjoy watching my Spectrum 4-6-0, it is my favorite engine. Watching it pull a string of 60' coaches up the incline of my main line and crossing the trestle is pure joy.
Second choice would be my Spectrum Shay with a load of ore cars making its way up and down the steep incline from the mine to the processing plant.
Pity neither has sound at the moment.
Well one day.

Mine is the LGB forney. Built like a tank, runs like a charm. I like large models of small prototypes.

In HO I could not part with my little brass 2-6-0.I get a lot of flack when I run it on a friends layout with three passenger cars behind it. It is tiny. In On30 my verticle boiler Bachmann shay. It is one of the reasons I moved to On30. In "F" my bachmann two truck shay. I also have an HO shay, do I see a patern?

You have an F-15 on you layout??? Great plane but I thought the question was about favorite steam engines LOL
<-------------will always be that one. I've always loved the style of the N&W J.

My beautiful Bachmann HO Shay. Even had an opportunity to ride in the cab of a 1:1 scale Shay in Cass, WV not too long ago. Let me tell ya, it's almost as if those things are alive.

When I get it back from PCM (sound stopped working) my PCM Y6-b. Draged 85 cars up a 1.5% grade like there was nothing hooked to it at K-10's Model Trains at the Christmas party.
For now my BLI Hudson, pulls well and sound great, BLI M1-a and Class J. Class J is the second best puller after the Y6-b.

I was at first tempted to write "my BLI heavy mikes." They look great, run great and sound great and I still get that big ear to ear grin when I run them. However, upon looking at my stuff there is one steam locomotive that is defeinately my "favorite." It's a little Aurora Postage Stamp N-scale (well, made to run on a nine mm gauge track) 0-6-0 tank engine. It won all my engine races (put one engine on one side of the loop and another on the other side and crank the MRC Trottlepack all the way and see who catches up to who) waaaaaaaay back when. What fun!! Yeah - that little guy is my favorite and there is no way I'm gonna ever get rid of it.
Well I've only got two, a Spectrum USRA Heavy Mountain and a Trix/Marklin USRA Light Mikado. They're the heritage power, so they don't get run too much but I'm going to have to go with the Trix/Marklin as my favourite, that all metal body and tender, as well as being my only engine with sound.
Cheers!

Hmmm...that would be my Bachmann Spectrum 4-4-0. This is a sweet-running locomotive that evokes a slower and simpler time. If that wasn't good enough, I am waiting for delivery of the same engine that is DCC and sound. Now I am patiently waiting for Bachmann to produce a Mogul with DCC and sound.

My favorite right now is the IHC 2-6-0. Of course it's also my only. Still, for the price, that is one nice running loco.
Now, if you check back late next week, I may say it's the Bachmann 2-8-0 I just picked up. We'll see when it comes in!

These were 1960s rebuilds of prewar express engines. Early "prototypes" also used American style boxpox wheels. Really kicked b**t, and had great lines too.
