I've always hated the Grand Trunk's blue and red, and I've always admired the black engines of Norfolk & Western and Norfolk Southern. I prefer the older N&W schemes with yellow (dulux gold) lettering, and I think the reason is that they have an elegant simplicity; they are nothing more than what they need to be, no pretention, and the black pays a sort of homage to the high levels of achievement N&W made in regards to steam locomotive design and construction. Had the economics not demanded it, the paint scheme seems to say, these engines would still be simple articulateds...

I'm increasingly favoring the N&W blue scheme, which is appropriate for my 1971 period, but in general I dislike blue as an overall body color. Conrail is down there near the bottom of my list. I don't mind it when it is a darker blue (as on N&W, or on B&O units), but when I think of any of the other light-blue schemes I rate them low.

Also, white is just wrong; the Lehigh Valley snowbirds are only redeemed by their black roofs.

Add another one for the Black- NS isn't as bad, but the Penn Central, yech! Black, no graphics and always filthy.

WOW must take a look at them seems cool steamlocomotive black diesels and also filthy ! I remember once driving into Las Vegas through the desert along the road I saw a train with VERY dirty black diesels, could that be the penn central you mean?

you should have gone up to them and scratched them, You'de probably discover that thier was a grey and red paint scheme of a Southern Pacific locomotive buried under that half inch caking of dirt and grime.[(-D]

I kinda added these to the "favorite color " thread but here are mine:

SP grey/red and covered from head to toe in Grime.

Conrail Blue
(bad Earl Shiebs $99 one color paint jobs, "right!")

Norfolk Southern Black Hearses
(unless your Johnny Cash or an MIB, black dont work on diesels)

Then you must really hate Penn Central...........at least Conrail and NS came up with a logo......

For thier drabe Teliban like black shapeless Berka colorscheme YES, But I always thought that Penn Centrals P in the C logo was pretty cool. NS's whitehorse loco is kinda hookie to me. Conrail had a logo?[:D]

In defense, of Norfolk Southern.

I'm not a big fan of locomotives painted all black but, with that jumping horse, sleek stripes and logo one has to admit that Norfolk Southern did it with style!

One of its predecessors, Norfolk & Western was a lot drabbier with just a big NW on the sides of the locomotives. Have to admit that I do miss the old "Green & White" Southern Railway.

NS does have a great logo, in fact I think it has the best logo for a Class 1. CR just had "that line and circle thing". I've seen engines in the new NS paint scheme and I've also seen dirty PCs .

I can live with BNSF's "pumpkins", that's a throwback to the Great Northern. Its their scheme of beige, with green and maroon that makes me ILL!!

Who thought that up, Martha Stewart?

See what I mean?....The one in the middle.

Wisconsin Central: Scheme is nice, but the colors don't really "me***ogether well".

I agree with Lupo: The Florida "Tri-Rail" commuter line service from West Palm Beach to Miami. White, Orange and Green: Blah!

Least Favourite Colour Schemes
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, February 10, 2004 6:23 AM
4884Bigboy did the "Most Favourite" Paint schemes so I thought it would be fitting to do the Least favourite colour schemes.

I have a few dislikes myself. I was never a big fan of NYC's colour schemes of pale green or Red and Grey boxcars. In the Grand scheme of things this won't matter none the less I suspect it could turn into an interesting thread, If we keep it respectful[;)]
