BLI SP passenger cars?
Posted by Lillen on Thursday, March 6, 2008 12:43 PM

Hi,

Could someone help me. The SP daylight cars are as you know coming out sometimes in the future. I would need help to know what cars I would need to buy to make an accurate train. A suggestion for a shortened variant would also be nice. I would appreciate it if you could indicate it by the numbers here:

Thanks for helping me out here!

Magnus

I hope someone has a better answer to your question since the original release announcement had the PCM cars for the 1941 train and listed the numbers.  This latest ad you pointed to is the BLI list and they do not have pictures attached to them.  The BLI cars we were told at one time would be the later era of 1955 on and would be without the skirts on the cars.

BLI is the only ones that could answer your question unless some insider has a direct reply from them on this issue.  I will not order any of them until they tell us what we are getting now that they have switched the process from PCM to BLI.

The GS4 will have QSI and the train might have changed in some ways so BLI should get our email to this question.

The original order numbers for the PCM cars in their book were from PCM # 680 to 699 for both trains and the new cars being offered are completely different.  To make an accurate train for a certain era, we need to know what is being offered by BLI.   It would seem they are so rushed to put out a train and the GS4 since both MTH and Athearn are making versions of the train, that they have omitted any details for us to look into.

The cars below are the later era cars and do not represent any of the train I want for the GS4 to pull.   Maybe they are building both sets but who knows???

CAZEPHYR,

I asked Mathew Williamson about decoders on the BLI forum and what they will be using in the future, and his reply was that they will only be producing new models with Blueline and QSI, there will be NO more Loksound equipped models. The only difference with the GS-4, as far as I can tell with the new promo is the change to QSI.

Maybe they plan on dropping the PCM name ? Seems to be little point in producing advertising material for 3 product lines when it would be more economical to run just 2.

Cheers,

Warren

That sounds like the way the deal is going, but the later era cars probably will not have the skirts on them.  I hope they clarify this question and make both the steam era with skirts along with the diesel era cars.

The schedule still shows the PCM cars as the original train and the BLI cars as the later train.   However, the schedule still shows the GS4 as a PCM model.  Maybe, maybe not????  Some explainations are in order.

As I recall, there's enough cars for Both trains, going one in each direction. So you only neeed half the list of cars on the BLI site.

It is true the PCM list was for two trains and the BLI seems to be also, but some of the aticulated chairs cars are multiples.  The new BLI list on FDT clearly states that it is for the post 1955 era.  That would be correct for the PA set only only after 1955.

BLI still needs to answer our question.

$104 bucks for a passenger car? I thought $40 was a lot for one!

That is not a bad price considering the next best option are the CIL cars.

The articulated car is really two cars on three trucks.  The price is very low for a double car that is a one of a kind.

Athearn is also producing SP Daylight cars for the 1937 version of the train. In later years the "Daylight" cars were in a common pool of cars and were assigned to other trains. The "Cascade" between Portland and Oakland had a set of articulated chair cars from the Daylight pool. These cars were repainted in two tone grey to match the colour scheme of the rest of the train. The "Lark" also got some cars from the Daylight pool.

The original consist was:

Baggage-Chair

Chair

Atriculated Chair(3 sets)

Lunch Counter Tavern

Diner

Parlour

Parlour-Observation

The Coast Daylight proved to be very papular and the train was replaced in 1941 by new equipment with the 1937 train becoming the "Noon Daylight"

The Atriculated Chair cars were operated with the car with the ladies room first so the washrooms would be on the engineer's side of the train. The diner operated kitchen front. The triple unit diners were NOT part of the 1937 train they came with the 1939 train.

Hope this helps.

I did know that. When I get my MTH Daylight, I will get Athearn Passenger Cars.
