For my 55th birthday celebration on Saturday, my wonderful wife is taking me to Columbus, Ohio, to visit some train shops. I'm aware of The Train Station on Indianola, but are there some others that I should visit? I'm interested in HO scale and am kind of looking for a place that has some "advanced" stuff like detail parts, scratchbuilding materials and a good selection of books & magazines.
Since we live in Findlay, are there any shops "along the way" that we would want to visit?
Thanks in advance!

I visited this store twice in my travels and it seemed OK.
The Train Station.

Dan,
If you ever wander over to the east side of OH, in North Canton is shop called Nick's Railway Supply. GREAT place for detail parts and supplies. They are also a Walther's dealer. If you can't find what you want in Columbus, give Nick's a call. They either have it or can get a hold of it.
It's mind-boggling the amount of detail parts that Nick's has in-store. Derrick the cat (who "guards" the front of the store) is pretty cool, too.

There is also a train show at the medina county fairgrounds on rt 18 this sunday from 10-4 just in case you are this way
Is that the state fairgrounds in Columbus? Any idea about the hours & day or days? Are the Great American Train Shows still being presented under that name? I can't seem to find anything online.
Thanks!

It is a great place to spend lots of money on detail parts. I believe he also has a website.
Mike,
The link to the web site is already there. Just click on the blue underscored words above and it will take you directly to their web site.
There are several Hobbyland model shops in Columbus, the best one I think is at Graceland shopping center, about 10 minutes from The Train Station. If on I270 on the North side, take Rte 23 south, this will be High Street. Go South for a few miles and Graceland shopping center will be on your right, go in the shopping center and Hobbyland will be on the right side halfway down. I think they have the best prices in town, but selection is limited. Decent supplies etc available.
I don't think much of the Hobbyland at Dublin and 161.
If you continue South on High St, go left on Morse Rd and then Right on Indianola Ave The Train Station will be a little ways down on your left. Much better selection but prices tend to be just a little higher. To be honest I have seen some better prices in TTS recently, maybe they are more aware of Hobbyland's prices.
Another choice is get back to High Street and continue south, not sure how far, and you will come to Robbies Hobbies. I an not crazy about this place, has more used stuff and I think a little overpriced. But worth stopping if only in the area, may catch a bargain.
Not sure about the others in town. I no longer go to Hobbytown on Rome Hilliard Rd unless on the West side with nothing to do.
If on the west side you can drive accross Trabue Rd (90% sure thats the road) and you will drive past a hump yard, not sure if you can stop anywhere.
Good luck.

Yeah, that's Trabue Rd. It goes right over the top of the yard. You can get a real good veiw of The Buckeye Yard and it's hump from there. You can get pretty close to the sanding and fueling towers if you hit some side streets around there.
It's been a few years since I was at the Hobbyland on 161. It "used to" be pretty good.(things change.)

Just found this if you go to any of the Hobbylands. $10 off any $50 order.
Let me correct myself..... it's called the " Great Train Expo " ... at the Expo Center. I guess I've always called it what I originaly said. It runs Sat & Sun, 10 am - 4 pm. Usually there's something in the model RR magazines..... but not like they use to advertise. You REALLY have to look for it, which makes me kinda wonder why.

Funny, Tom-as I recall this place has been around for a good while, yet I've never checked them out, & I know where it's at. (about 10m away) I've been hitting Rob's Trains in Alliance for the detail parts (they have a good selection too IMO) I may have to check it out soon.
If I ever get up there, I hope Derrick isn't as big as a Russian Blue cat that roamed a sports shop here in town many years ago. It was gentle as a teddy bear, but probably the biggest cat (& deepest meow) you'd ever experienced, once you'd gotten over being startled with it rubbing against your legs!
Mitch,
Yea, Nick's is an unusual business: 1/2 lawn care, 1/2 train shop. There's some things a Nick's that I have never seen at other LHSes that I frequent.
And it's a bit of a haul for me because I'm coming down from the east side of Cleveland. (About an hour and 15 minute drive one way.) If I stop by Nick's, I also drive over to Rob's in Alliance or vica versa.
Rob's is a neat store and I really enjoy Nils, the owner. He's quite a character. You're right. They do have a good selection of Details West and Detail Associates parts.

Nick's is a great place to pick up detail parts. He not only carries the full line of DA and DW parts also must stuff by Custom Finishes, Cannon, Hi-Tech, Cal scale and others. He also carries a lot of building detail parts. Just a great place to go, a little off the beaten path, but worth the trip.

So, does anyone know anything about this "new shop?"
My daughter is in college at Kent State, so I may get to go over to both the Canton shop and the Alliance one as well. Sounds like a full day almost... it would take us a couple hours to get there, spend some time with our daughter, spend some time at the shops (don't forget travel time in between) then a couple more hours to get back home.
Thanks.
About a half mile further down Indianola is a shop called the Blue Caboose on the same side of the street.
