Wiring Turnouts
Posted by carmancp30 on Sunday, January 13, 2008 8:51 PM

I am having trouble wiring a Shinohara code 100 turnout, I have run feeder wires to each leg of the turnout but one leg shorts out, I have isolated (insulated) the frog but it hasn't solved the problem. Does anyone have any sugestions?

Welcome to the forum! I do not have an answer for you.   Posting a question at night can sometimes receive little or no response.  I'm sure someone may see this on page one now.  I just thought I'd give your question a chance.  Enjoy the forum.

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] Pleas let us know if you are DC or DCC. It makes a difference. How did you isolate the frog?

SHINOHARA TURNOUTS are power routing types.

As such: 1. power is fed from the point end. 2. The two inner frog rails need to be insulated (plastic rail joiners) as the frog changes polarity with the throw. (This may be your problem.

3. The frog , frog rails. and points are all supposed to be 'hot'. But the inner frog rails heed to be insulated.

WALTHERS (Shinohara made) code 83 TURNOUTS are NOT power routing types. FROG is already insulated for DCC. SHINOHARA's are not.

You did not specify you were running DCC. If so, you have the wrong turnout.

If you are running DCC, don't panic!  It is certainly possible to use power-routing turnouts with DCC, and they don't require any different wiring for DCC than they do for DC.  If you're still having trouble, try to post a track diagram showing where your gaps and feeders are.

It's also possible to convert power routing TOs to non power routing types. I've done it many times. The first time I was scared then it became easy.

See this site for detailed information.

Also it would help us to help you if you could post a diagram of exactly how you isolated your frogs.

Good luck,

Karl
