Changing an Overland engine from DC to AC
Posted by 2059 on Friday, January 23, 2004 1:39 PM
As some of us might know Overland locomotives are made to run on DC power. My layout currently runs on AC power, a DC locomitive would run the wrong way. I figure if I would switch the two electric wires around where they connect to the mechanism that would allow the locomitive to run the right way on my layout. Now here is the question. Does anybody know if those wires leading from the trucks lead directly to the mechanism or do they go to some sort of circuit board making my plan difficult? Any other ideas how to switch one of those DC locomotives to AC?? [?]

If you layout is HO scale, and not Marklin, it is NOT AC.

Swapping the wires at the motor, wil make the locomotive run in the opposite direction, still on DC. Subjecting a PM DC motor, like used in model trains, to AC will burn it out, very quickly.

Give us some more information, like scale, two or three rail; and maybe we can give you better advice.

My layout is the basic HO scale type. I just looked at my power pack. It's DC [:p], I shoulda looked at that. Wow I've been going around thinking I've been running AC, I passed up a few opportunities thinking those engines wouldn't work. [:(] But now I get the picture, all is great [8D] So those engines will work on my layout. But if I do have to switch the wires for some reason it would work, thanks for the info, it helped a lot.
