Here are a few I know. Some I have a good guess, but I'll let someone who knows for sure respond on those.

I humbly suggest you spend some time at http://www.google.com/ with your list of abbreviations. You'll learn much more than what the abbreviation stands for. As far as I know, Alaska isn't an abbreviation, but the name of our 49th state.

Just to fill in some blanks:

REA should be Railway Express Agency-RDG is the Reading.

If it actually is MH, it would be the Mount Hood RR.

PGE-Pacific Great Eastern.

ON-Ontario Northland  (actually should be  ONT?)

SLC-San Luis Central.

CRDX-Chicago Freight Car Leasing Co.

C&EI-Chicago & Eastern Illinois.

FW&D-I'm pretty sure it's "Fort Worth & Denver"-an old subsidiary of the Burlington (CB&Q)

CS-Colorado & Southern.

A couple I knew, & a couple I cheated by calling up the abbreviations on RR Picture Archives.

1. CB&Q - Otherwise known simply as the Burlington
9. RI -  short for CRI&P or Chicago Rock Island & Pacific
10. M&StL - Otherwise known as the  Minny Lou.
17. CRDX - Any reporting mark ending with an "X" indicates a private (non-railroad) company.

Yes.  Actually the C&S operating in Texas.  Texas had (has?) a law that stated any railroad operating in the state had to be encorporated in the state.  So there are lots of railroad names in Texas that exist only because of this law.   What was the Santa Fe's Texas name - Gulf Colorado & Santa Fe?

The C&S operated to Texline, and the FW&D(earlier the Fort Worth & Denver City) operated the rest of the way.  The Texas corperation laws forced this.  The C&S/FW&D lasted as 'paper' railroads until the 80's under BN before they were formally merged into the BN.  Both used the CB&Q/BN paint schemes, but had seperate number series for accounting purposes.  On the 'Joint Line' south of Denver, the switchers has C&S-AT&SF reporting marks on the cabs(using the CB&Q/BN paint schemes).

Nope, sorry, not what I was looking for...  I guess I should have stated this is pre-1982.

Central of Georgia?

Yep...

Great Northern, Great North Western

Yep, and nope, thought the GNW I'm thinking of went bust in the 30's.

*EDIT* The GNW *should* be G&NW.  Will fix prior post....

Southern

OK, that one was a gimme.

Temiskaming and Nipissing?

And, nope.

Answers tomorrow!

I remember Walthers having a list of roadnames on their website, but I can't seem to find it now.
