Cleaning liquid for CMX?
Posted by Blind Bruce on Tuesday, December 18, 2007 11:03 AM
My local hardware store is out of laquer thinner but I have a supply of "Hobby Poxy" thinner which is mostly toluene. Should I try that or wait for the laquer thinner?

Are you near a Wal-mart?  They would have lacquer thinner in the paint section.  I've never tried toluene, and am not sure if it would be a safe alternative.

I agree, the toluene might be a bit strong for plastic ties holding your track together and such. If you cannot find the laquer thinner, you might try rubbing alcohol with a 90% solution.

Lacquer thinner is one of the most aggressive cleaners.  Unless the track is severly dirty, the 90% alcohol should clean fine and does not leave a residue.

In Winnipeg you should be able to find lacquer thinner(Walmart, Canadian Tire, etc...).  The lacquer thinner really does a good job of cleaning off the really attached crud.  Once you run a CMX cleaning train with lacquer thinner, follow up trains of 91% isopropyl alcohol as needed should keep it clean.  The lacquer thinner really cuts the crud and residue from old track cleaning solutions you may have tried....

OK folks, I tried Wal Mart, Canadian Tire, a local lumber chain store, Home Depot and Rona. All said that they no longer have it. I finally convinced a local body shop to "donate" a quart from his 55 gallon drum. I'll pick it up tomorrow afternoon, weather permitting. There might be a Canadian law or some sort of directive that regulates the sale of "sniffable" liquids.

Thanks for the help.
