Well without a closer look you never know but I say better to try than to just wonder.  I would be intersted in seeing it run.  If manufacturers can build Thomas and Harry Potter trains then why not a triplex although its not accurate to the prototype its still intersting.

I wonder what happened that he/she is selling all of his hard work...

Divorce, Illness, a developed fear of little people that stand very still day after day watching a train go in circles?

 Ok, snap out of it...

I do wonder why...

I always like the verbiage in some of these sales:

All dedicated railroading enthusiasts will recognize the value of these
rare engines and know the starting bid is far less than the collections
collective value.

If you have any doubts about the true value of this collection and what
it represents please ask the advice of an experienced professional.

Sheesh...Do you think he will get any bids at that starting price?  Cash only? My 2 cents [2c]

No. He wont.

8500 sheesh...

I will tell you this:

The auction fee on that asking price will be worth more than the entire collection probably.

uh - uh. No way.

Yes there are a lot of trains there.  But unless there is a whole lot about Rivarossi that I don't know (which I don't collect), there is not a lot of high end locos there.  Maybe worth 3 grand with good rolling stock....what do you think?....and if almost everything was as new.....

but sight unseen, old stock, Bachmann????

I've got a bridge I'd like to sell on Ebay for $8500  too.

I'm surprised he posted your comments, Dinwitty. Laugh [(-D]

Those kitbashes are conversation pieces, I guess, but they should at least be able to move back and forth under their own power on a straight test track.

It looks like he was having fun, but $8500 for that collection? I don't think so. I don't understand some of these sellers who enter an outrageous amount for the starting bid, and then wonder why the item doesn't sell. Better to start low and let the market decide.

When did Bachman come out with their Cherry line? How does it compare to Spectrum?

Someone must have told him that his collection was worth well over $8500 and he went running with it.  That auction can really make a normally smart man look like a donkey.  Brand new retail for all 60+- engines and 100 boxcars is less than $8500.  Even if yu said each lco was $80 and the boxcars are $10 each the total would be around $5800 RETAIL.  Yea he MUST be selling this collection to fuel a crack cocaine addiction and since he was probably high when listing the auction his price went high too.  Shame shame shame.  If that sells for $8500 I will feel stupid but I am pretty sure stupidity will be diverted in this case.  LOL  Someone needs to send him an email that crack kills

I believe he is using a used car term, referring to "cherry condition", meaning excellent-to-perfect condition.  Notice he uses this term to describe locos of different manufacture.

Ah, you must be a PRR fan.  I saw a website that had a bunch of them, but don't remember the web address.  Some were more, ahh, colorful than others, and some that would be considered unfit for this forum (what some would consider foul language).  Most were unflattering, to say the least, some were downright insulting, but in some cases, they might be justified.

Not only horribly overpriced for Rivarossi "old stock" but you must pick it up at his location.  And then figure out how to transport it all.  No, thanks.

That's what I took it for too.  Then I noticed he list one loco as cherry but in the details it's missing a step or something.  More like damaged or broken...not cherry. Laugh [(-D]

Starting the auction at $8500.00 makes it a sale an not an auction.  Would have been better to have started it at $100.00 with a reserve of more (not $8500.00 dreamer!).  I'm going to follow it and see if there are any bids.

Pretty sure 3Rail was making a joke here...Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

That's around $140/loco! You can't even factor the cars in since they look mostly Tyco-ish. Someone thinks their time is worth a lot more than it really is...

That looks like a typical GATs train show table, only in vertical format. One thing is missing, the A Team Tyco set.

Unless his locomotives are special brass collectors items, why would you waste your time on OLD loco's that don't have sound or are DCC ready when there is so much great stuff out there now. I'd rather take that $8500 & spend it on new stuff as opposed to that old, uhem, junk.

Let me go to my local bank to see if I can get a small loan for that auction instead of buying like, lets see, perhaps a car?

Interesting comments, mostly on the downside as to the value of this collection, would be of interest to find out what others would get if they sold THEIR trains, you may be in for a big surprise, I attended an auction of a guy who thought he was going to make a wad of money on brass locomotives he had bought over a few years, he showed me the receipts at @$125,000 (there were a lot of locos) at the auction a lot of train buffs were there, but, I think were only curious and the result of the auction was just over $35,000 and he had to pay an auction fee, so good luck on getting rid of your collection that you think you will retire on, but think of the fun you had "playing with trains" remember, it's a hobby.

I agree with your statement. Only a fool would think they could actually make money or retire on brass locomotives or any other model choo choo. Think about it, how many financial advisors you know said, "Hey go out and buy loads of choo choo trains" they'll double in price some day Smile [:)]

I buy trains to play with. I know they won't be worth squat 20 years from now. Now my matchbox 1968 diecast car collection, well....thats another story. Could be worth more money later, or possibly not. I don't care, because I enjoy them.

My moneys in a 401K that my employer contributes 150% towards. Now thats something that may accrue in value. (Or not depending on the stock market Big Smile [:D])

Tatans, who gets into a hobby to make money?  To be honest I can't think of one that I have that I may actually make money on if I ever turn around and got out of it.  As for my train collection I would guess that it is probably worth 1/2 of what I paid for it.  The only thing I can think of that maybe worth something is my Athearn Genesis Ontario Northland 50' boxcars and my Proto 2000 Ontario Northland gondolas, they seem to get double what I originally bought them for when I see them on Ebay.  I've noticed Kato CP AC4400CW's going for over what they were new as well.

Try boating as your hobby. Have you priced new boats lately and then checked to see what they're worth a few years later!

$30,000 for a nice 7 passenger speedboat.

Worth $15,000 2 years from now.......

Even less as time goes on......

My brother in law did that exact thing. He uses it 3 or 4 times a year. Is that worth it? I guess to him it is, but think what kind of equipment and train layout you could have for that kind of money. Man, that could keep you busy for 20 years.

It will be interesting to see - after it doesn't sell - if he breaks it up and sells it one piece at a time with shipping allowed outside of Texas. Some of the items aren't that bad, the more recent (1990's) Rivarossi engines looked pretty good and really ran OK too, although they tended to be a little light. For a decent price I wouldn't mind the Milwaukee streamlined 4-6-4 or a NYC streamlined Hudson (not the streamlined 4-6-6-4 though). Big Smile [:D]

Lucky I didn't get into this hobby with the intent of making a profit, then.

Looks like a bunch of junk to me.The only locos that are worth anywhere close to anything are the Riv Allegheny and the recent production stuff. All that other stuff will have pizza cutter flanges.I guess it may be worth something to a collector but I dropped Riv years ago after a few quality issues.Dan
