BLI 20th Century Hudson
Posted by jecorbett on Wednesday, September 12, 2007 10:20 AM

Well summer is almost over and soon I will be getting back to model railroading which for me is a cold season hobby. I'm trying to catch up on what has been happening in the hobby the last 5 months.

Did BLI ever come out with their 20th Century streamlined Hudson. Trainworld doesn't have it listed on their website. They do have it listed in their MR ad but it has been there a long time. It seems to me that this was announced at least a year and a half ago and was supposed to be out by last summer. Have they made a production run of this yet?

John,

No.  And, unless they get more pre-orders for them, I'm guessing that it will be a while - if at all.  BLI does have plans for a 3rd run of the non-streamlined Hudsons.

According to Tony's Train Exchange web site, the 20th Century Hudsons were announced in Oct '06 and still have a release date of TBD.  It would be terrific to see them get released.  I'm still waiting patiently for the L-4a Mohawks. Smile [:)]

You and about a thousand others would like to know When???????????

No , they have it on the dreaded   TBD  schedule, which means they are on hold until a sufficient amount of reservations and money is available.

The first announcement was great and it looked like they were going to do the 20th Century model soon, but no, it is not scheduled.   We call that a fishing trip for reservations.

Cheers

The mohawks have slipped also and probably will get the TDB before too long.  I hope you get the model, but I would not count on it to be on schedule.    They are bringing in brass and for the life of me, I don't understand why they are spending money to import brass at a time most of us are not buying brass on a regular basis.

The 3rd run of the standard Hudson uses the same basic tooling and the import cost is much less than a new start up model like the 20th Century Hudson.

 Cheers

CAZ,

Yea, I'm not holding my breath.  I forgot to mention also that the BLI delivery schedule link on their web site has the brass Mohawks docketed for a May '08 release date.  Taking the New Haven I-5s as a comparison point, I'm assuming that implies that the hybrid Mohawks won't be released till late summer/early fall '08.  I guess you have to cater to the folks who spend more money first.

The GN S-1 came out but in it was in brass and since they did not sell, there was no money left to bring in the one that all of us wanted.  They keep bringing in brass into a market that is the worst brass market in twenty years or more and can't figure out how to move them.

You can't make money by stocking items that do not sell on shelves.  Yes, they will sell a few of the Brass Big Boy, probably twenty or so but they go into collections.   How much money could they make on say twenty Big Boys??   How much money will they make on the Blue Line Big Boys??   The way the Blue Line has been selling, they should continue to offer all of the models into that line.

Sorry, but someone had to say it.

And, apparently, by just glancing at the delivery schedule, that's exactly what BLI is doing.  Every announcement for them recently has been pretty much Blueline right across the board.

Granted those brass versions are gorgeous.  But there's NO WAY that I'll be dropping ~$1,800 for a Mohawk, or $3,000 for a Big Boy.  I don't buy trains to place them in a display cabinet...

The Brass that they are importing has to be delaying the models we want because of the money involved in importing brass or high volumes of Die Cast models.   The 20th Century Hudson would be a hit much like the original Hudson or PRR K4 is they built it.  These are the models that made Lionel and other company famous.  When I first saw the ad of the 20th Century, I thought this was a great move, but when I noticed it went TBD, it really turned me off.

Yes, I know they have to have reservations to build the models and they used to get these numbers from the dealers across the nation.  After the three blow out sales that has left many of their major dealers stuck with full price models on LHS shelves even today, the reservation numbers are mostly from on line customers only and a few from distributors knowing it will sell.   If they had announced this model prior to the dealers being burned, it would have rung the bell the first time out.

BLI  has a new movie out on line about their Blue Line

They have a fast and slow connection mode.  I am on dial up and downloaded the movie of about 10Mb.   It is interesting and is about the Blue Line.

Yea, I saw that announced on the BLI forum yesterday.  I'll definitely check that out.
