Books as about Big Boys, challengers and Sherman Hill?

Hi, I would love some tips about books about Big boys, challengers and UP in general. The reason is the Big Boy bug that bit me yesterday when one of my Big boys pulled 72 ore cars up a 2% hill.

There are many books on the Union Pacific Big Boys and Challengers, but some of the older ones are out of print.   A new book called Union Pacific Trackside with Lou Schmitz is good overall and is by Morning Sun Books.     The Kratsville book on the Big Boy and Steam in general are good.    Motive Power of the Union Pacific by Kratville and Ranks.  

The Challenger also is a book by Kratville.  

Challenger Portaits by J. Ehernberger  This book has a picture of evey Challenger the Union Pacific owned.

 Some of the older books may be available as used books at Caboose Hobbies in Denver.  They have a great selection of books.

They ship overseas but the fare might be very high.

Also by Ehernberger, and Francis Gschwind, is the book "Sherman Hill", printed in 1973, LoC 73-88336. Also by Bill Kratville, and Harold Ranks, is "Motive Power of the Union Pacific", first printed 1960.

I try to make the most of both!  Easy when you have an understanding wife, surely books about old foreign locomotives must be more important then feeding the children and putting clothes on them before the winther. They can get bask in the glow from their enlightened father I tell you all!

I think you will like the three books you have ordered, especially the Big Boy and Challenger books. 

When you are ready for the ultimate book about Cheyenne and Sherman Hill, purchase "The History of the Union Pacific in Cheyenne" book by Robert Darwin.  I got this book when it first came out in 1987 and it is one of those really large format books with almost 400 pages.

The other book that is very good is the "Challenger Portraits" by James Ehernberger.    This book has pictures of every Challenger the Union Pacific owned.

Another to look for is Union Pacific Across Sherman Hill, by George Drury from Kalmbach Books

 

I got that one today, it is on my bed waiting for me right now!  It looks pretty good.

 

The other suggested books will get purchased eventually. I just wait for the right price as I do with all my purchases. Take this book, right now I have found it for 200$ on Amazon, I waited and waited and when I saw it for 19.99 or something I jumped on it.
