Here's what I've been up to.

Here's the barn I've been working on. My first scratchbuilt. All that's left on the exterior is 'metal' roofing, vertical wood siding, and the stone foundation. Seems like the closer I get it to being done, the more there is left to do.

Here's my SW1200 shell I've painted. 95% complete. It still needs handrails, 3" yellow striping along the walkway, dullcoat and can be put back on the frame. I'm waiting to install DCC w/sound before I put it back together tho.

Keep up the good work everyone!

Maybe the pictures didn't come out the way you expected but that is pretty good work and nice detail touch in the doorway of the KCS.

Managed to get a little more done on the backdrop in this corner.  This is obviously a side-on shot and I am so far pleased that the foreground does not look completely out of scale with the backdrop and scenery.

The train is about 18" out from the rear track (covered with blue tape).  The scenery in the background is about 6" deep.  I know, what is a MKT E8 doing pulling a SP coach consist - will have to do until the Texas Special is done.

This MKT E8 from BLI finally arrived this week. One can see the blending detail still to go on the edge of the backdrop.

Tom

Here are pics of the other end of the layout.  I added a small area where some illegal dumping is occuring.  I still have to add a backdrop and replace the water tower with a wind turbine.  Still a ways to go yet.

JaRRell, I really like what you did with the rocks.  I'd like to see more of that detail in close-ups some time.

P.S.- Nice engine, too.

Great pics posted!

Here is a custom lettered hopper I finally got the nerve to weather. I am not entirely happy with it. I should have faded the paint first. I used weathering powders from Bar Mills. It is a Bowser Gla that I lettered with Woodland Scenics Dry Transfers. As you can probably tell, I painted it with a brush as I don't have access to an airbrush. The ertl flat car next to it is my next car project. Have a new wood deck for it and those trucks are getting painted and probably replace those wheels sets. That all will have to wait though as my first priority is the backdrop, then starting some ballasting and ground cover.

Now that my layout is far along enough to run trains, I can concentrate more on detailing the diesel and rolling stock.

I detailed the SP diesels with Details West headlights and weathered them a little.

This is an old AHM car that is detailed with metal steps and roof walk.

Great work, everyone. I'm still trying to get up the courage to post some of my pics.

Art, those steps are amazing! I can believe it's taken seven months. How long will it take to build the elevator back to the top? :)

The Indiana Branch of the PRR is a little further along. I've finally gotten another working camera. The next step is to build the turnouts. I have the materials, but not the motivation to get going. It will be soon I hope. Notice the cameo appearance of Sparky and Lil Guy.

Here's the finished product...By using Joe's techinque of blending the fleece/fur with twine, felt and other material, you can't tell where the fleece/fur starts and ends. I don't have Silfor and budget is tight. So I made do with material from the scenery scrap box. If you pick up a few sheets of felt at Wally World (don't we look weird in the fabric and craft section?). Take a wire brush and scrape the felt, pull it in several directions like poly fiber and you have small, colored brush to match the fur. Joe Fugate's techinque is flawless. When this starts out it does look a pelt of dead animal on the layout. I also didn't color the fleece, I dry brushed with a fan brush, different colors of yellow and green. I found a drab yellow color. Please let me know what you think?

Bruce:

Nice shots...Sorry I didn't get a chance tin June to stop by in Dunsmuir on the way to Bend. I would have been honored to see your layout. We under-estimated the driving time from Fresno to Bend. I did stop for a minute in Dunsmuir to take some pictures and grab some lunch. I also took some shots of the same building in the little town on the Oregon-California border you have on your web site.

Sure is. That's a Light Mikado that sat in a park in New Orleans (pre-Katrina) for 40 years before being restored by a historical group and taken on a nationwide tour. I've never seen anybody say anything about model shots only.

Graphtihemi: Nice work! I really like the switcher, and the barn. That's really going to look good.

juby4life: I really like that junk pile. It looks really good.

Chuck Geiger: I really like that method. I will have to try that on my layout.

Chip: That is REALLY looking good.

ARTHILL: Like Mister Beasley said. All I can say is WOW.

Smoke: I really like the Weathering. Looks great!

Wedudler: That looks amazing!

Steamage: Nice! I really like that. I wish my locomotive where as good as those.

Well true to my word I would have pictures, but not of the same project. I did the super elevatition, but it was derailing my train. Yes, my wheel's and track where in gauge, and it wasn't too high. Not even a 1/32 or an inch. But I did get something done more important, a staging yard!!!

Now this is a staging yard, and a yard. It's going to be stub end, with no Runaround. But this will count as 2 yards. The beginning or the Subdivision, and the terminus. This will also be used for an attachment to a BN yard. So I may get to run transfers with a BN caboose. There isn't much track because I have run of road bed, and turn outs. Plus it's a tight spot for laying track. I have also laid plastic above the yard so no dirt falls on it. HopeFully by Tuesday I will get the track and start laying it. Then by Wednesday I hope to have feeders going there. Here are some before and after pictures.

NOTE: The chunck of Stryo foam you see under the track it tempory. I will have a board running undeer there.

Some fantastic photos here as usual!  I always look forward to seeing what all of you have been up to.  I have been assembling a Branchline laser cut house this week.  Here it is assembled, painted and being tested on the layout.  I am going to have to modify the terrain a bit to have it look right.  Not a problem... That's why I built the kit before finishing the scenery. ;) :D  It will become Miller's Bed and Breakfast.  That's my sister the Rev. Miller sitting on the porch.

Yesterday and today I worked on the scenery by the industries at Hopewell Junction.  Still quite a bit to complete but it is coming together little by little.

Here is an overview of the area:

Ray Seneca Lake, Ontario, and Western R.R. (S.L.O.&W.) in HO

We'll get there sooner or later!

Great work everyone. If I were to convey my awe and appreciation for every person's work, this post would be considerably longer than the ridiculous length it is now.

I'm chiming in here pretty late this weekend, not to mention some of the photos are overdue from last weekend. Whistling [:-^]

First shot is from quite a ways back. I really liked the perspective in this shot, and the S4 worked really well with the industrial background to create a nice industrial ambience. The S4 is owned by Guilford Guy, the same fellow who owns the 70 tonner featured in some of Ty's shots.

Now to what I promised last weekend. Splinter's Hardwood Furniture is for the most part finished. All that is needed are some details like forklifts and pallets, figures, and appropriately schemed trucks.

Another perspective, this time from US-5.

Speaking of which, another recent project was the US-5 grade crossing. I'm going to need some help from all you here on the forums for the crossing protection here, but that is for another thread.

A shot showing the eastern side of Westminster Heights, VT.

Closeup of the car card boxes and sorting shelf. Those codes underneath the industry names are locator codes for industry spots on the railroad. I pulled this from an Information Desk article in MR a while back. These simple codes correspond to specific spots at an industry, removing the need to write descriptions on a car card like "Montague Machine Co. - Exterior shed", whereas the code would be 03WH102. The first two digits correspond to the railroad, as my railroad is the third railroad of the NEAT pact (explanation on third page of Teen Place). WH is the location, the next digit is the industry, and the following digits indicate the spot.

A shot of the commuter rail station, which is complete aside from a sign that has since been installed.

A local freight rumbles under VT-121 in the dusk hours.

Great pics everyone!

Chip, I was having the same problem you are. I had all the stuff but I didn't feel like getting of my butt and doing something. Friday I finally just sat down and made myself start, and I built my first (successful) hand laid N scale #6 crossover. It's much smoother than any of my Atlas #7s. Now I only need 3 more crossovers and 22 singular turnouts and I'll be all set!Sigh [sigh] Maybe this will motivate you.

Chuck, thanks for sharing those pics, it looks great! I'll definitely be trying that once I start some scenery.

Nice work everyone!! This is one of the best WPF's we've had in a while. I actually have something worth showing off this week!Cool [8D]

The last two are just some background trees I'm trying out.  The ground foam in all the pics is home made. I'm pretty happy with the way the colors turned out. At least I'm making some progress!

Loathar, looking great! I really like the background trees. Care to share your technique? (or point me to where you have in the past? Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]) I'm almost at the point where I need to forest a very large background hill, and was planning to just go with polyfiber balls coated in ground foam. I'm especially curious to know what you do for trunks.

Thanks! The trunks are just tooth picks and BBQ skewers painted brown. I used clumps of lichen for the tops. I think it looks better than that poly fiber. Just glued it to the sticks, sprayed it with spray adhesive and sprinkled it with my home made medium ground foam. Sprayed it with hair spray to seal them.(nothing special) Those are just going to be back ground trees so I didn't care that much about the trunks. I'm going to do some more this week using some branches I cut out of the woods. Gonna try those for some Aggro trees too.

Spent most of the day working in this corner.  Made some progress and last was to stage these light weights that I got over a year ago with the new E8.

They will need some work obviously, new couplers, trucks, some re-painting.  But, at least they are the MKT Texas Special flag ship colors.

Tom

Great shots Tyler! Did she make it up the grade? lol, she needs a little weight. I can't wait to see 1751 or 1184 head up that pass. with a nice train!!!

Are you planning on keeping it a meandering branchline or are you thinking of a 50mph higher speed route?
