I didn't model off a prototype, I thought of the prototype in my head, ya see, I think it's easier to make your own cars and be creative rather than try to make the car perfectly like the prototype. I thought it looks more ornge to me.

Sweet! I have seen that video, it's awesome!

I'm assuming you used chalks or powers, like he did?

Okay cool, here's what I do in order:

  1. Take fine grit sandpaper and wear down the logo's roadnames, etc.
  2. Next, brush rust streaks under the walkway supports, then other random areas. To get straight rust streaks, take a straight edge and brush them beside the straight edge.
  3. Take a large brush and lightly brush the top of the walkways and loaders.
  4. Something that I didn't do yet, add dullcoate.

I would refer to this video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqITo4X2QGM&feature=channel. I think this really made me confident. Thank you everyone for the support!

Well, you guys asked for them, here they are:

They look excellent! I like the rust streaks, and faded logos/lettering.

Think you could explain how did these cars? Especially the rust streaks! Cool

Demon, yea, the company Alex F and Alex L said is where I get my MU hoses. Also, nice weathering!

Tyler, what you could do to your SDP35 is you could swap the side frames for a new style Flexi Coil trucks, and cover over the steam generator vents. This would be more proto-typical to the L&N/Family Lines, and later CSX SDP35s, which were used in yard service until the early 90s. So the WRS could have picked it up from the CSX. But it'd have to be in either the "Family Lines" system paint, or WRS, or a leaser, or what ever.

Since somebody mentioned about an art project, I'll show you my artistic talent:

I drew this up at the end of study hall, as for the hoppers, I am a begginer so critisim is asked for.

That's a nice weathering job you have on that Chessie! I haven't posted in a while, so I might as well.

Due to final projects, I haven't had much time for model trains, but I'm going to change that over winter break. I have 3 engines to paint and decal, one engine to kitbash (Bachmann SD40-2 shell onto an Athearn SDP40 frame... it's not pretty), not to mention putting plows on all of them, about a dozen freight cars to finish painting and decaling, and of course my diorama to finish up.

Whew!

Nope. It'll get a full repaint as WRS 2306. I might patch 3243 (a CSX U23B), but not this one.

Speaking of weathering and hoppers, I'm seriously thinking of re-doing my 12. I found out that that paint I used comes of with water and scrubbing, so I could re-do it with the same stuff, or try pastels (the leftovers from an art class I had)

I managed to finish that walthers 100-ton cement hopper, I'm going to weather it after I finish my SP box now that the semester is over.

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

You can also find most of the parts through Walthers, and order directly from them, or from your LHS.

I order from the LHS, advantage being I don't pay shipping or taxes (Hint hint: Get to know your LHS owner!) Tongue

LOL I tried to pay my tax when I bought a Bachmann grain hopper and he just said, "It's okay, I'll pay it." Tonight I weathered an Atlas Trainman covered hopper in a C&O heritage. It turned out pretty good, If anybody needs me to weather there grain hoppers, send me a pm!

I love Tucker's Hobbies in Warren, MA (near Palmer), but it's a bit too far to be considered as a LOCAL Hobby Shop... Like an hour and a half by car...

I love my LHS. The guy who runs it is great, and they have almost everytihng I need. No pikestuff, and not the best selection of locos (but i should be good on locos after Christmas). Also, no Atlas frieght cars. However, I'm going to ask him about ordering things from Walthers. I'd like to keep this shop (even though it ain't just trains, he also has R/C planes, car kits, and a bunch of other stuff), and also, on my allowance, I can get some structure kits, which I can't get after one months allowance off the internet, and also, my parents will let me get pretty much anything there, but they hate ordering off the internet, b/c then they have to use the credit card. Oh, if only I lived in Baltimore (that's where M.B. Klien's shop is Tongue).

Yeah, good job supporting those little hobby shops with some of the nicest service, and a live inventory that is actually kept up to date!

That's an interesting point, and I'm glad you mentioned it. Now I have reason to add some plows, and remove some footboards! Wink

My LHS burned down... Before that it was overpriced and didn't have anything I needed...

I don't actually do any superdetailing projects, as I'm a follower of Allen Mcclellend's "Good Enough" rule for operating layouts. If I had to superdetail every car I owned (almost all Athearn Blue Boxes) then I'd never have a layout to run them on! I do make sure my locos are detailed though, they're all Atlas and P2K, with the exception of the Walthers Trainline GP9m, which is the most detailed loco on the roster... (Happy now, Alex?Tongue)

I do need to do some work on 2306 when I repaint it, as when I built it over 5 years ago, I somehow left off the snowplow, which is sort of useful in New Hampshire and Vermont... 1402 also needs a snowplow and some work, because the UP version comes with footboards and no plow. Footboards were outlawed in the '70s, and it needs a snowplow... Someday I'll work on those...

MIne doesn't block much.

I got my sound equipped SPSF GP30 yesterday. Today I swapped the shells (and sideframes; black for BN, silver for SPSF) with one of my GP30s. The process was little bit harder that I thought it would be. Turns out I had to cut the front light bar on the older run's (like my BN GP30s) to fit around the relocated lighting. The sound equipped GP30 doesn't pull very well, it had trouble getting 12 cars (with plastic wheels and non-reamed sideframes) going on level track. Fortunately, it'll be running with 2 other non-sound GP30s (will do about 30-40 cars each on level), and that GP35 (should sound about the same IRL; will work on making it heavy) I've been working on for a while. (so it'll run as a consist with 3 GP30s and a GP35, where to put the GP35 in the consist?)
