Yes...finally!!!
Posted by johnnyx on Friday, July 20, 2007 12:37 AM
Hey everyone, hope all is well within the group!  Well the reason im posting this is to let everyone know that im finally getting a place with a full basement!!!  My signifigant other has given me the ok to have the whole thing be a layout!!!!!! Shy [8)]  Finallly ill have a place to start building and enjoying all my trains.   The full size is right aroud 19x9 so I should be able to get a decent layout going.  This will be my first layout and im thinking of modeling either the old reading lines or the DL&W thru NJ......  or both haha!  Anyway I just wanted to share with ppl who actually care about stuff like this and not just go  "thats nice"Zzz [zzz]   lol.    Have a good day all.

Hi johnnyx,

I know exactly how you feel, lucky Big Smile [:D]Wow!! [wow]Yeah!! [yeah]

To get a big space for a layout is something very nice. I vote for Reading Lines because they have a very beautiful paint sheme. Look at this:

Or this:

Take your time and do a lot of planning. And don't forget to post pictures of your progress. I'm looking forward to that.

Congrats Johnny! Let the champagne flow. I grew up riding those DL&W rattletraps, so I'll be anxious to see what you come up with if that's what you decide to model. Thumbs Up [tup]

You're getting a layout room with a house on top? That's great! Enjoy.

A couple of years ago, my wife and I had purchased a new truck, and not wanting to park it outdoors (hail can play havoc with a vehicle), were looking for a place with a garage. We found a nice duplex that fit the bill. Imagine my delight when I walked downstairs into a 33'x35' basement!!! She said I could only have 1/2, but, since she's moved... I win!

That's GREAT! Just one question. A full basement that's only 19'x9'?? That's only 171 sq. ft.Confused [%-)]

Well its a townhouse so its not a full size home, but its ok for what im lookin for right now. 171sq ft is plenty for me as of now, that and im not sure if there is more..... im just guessing.   As far as what I want to model goes....  I live across the street from the old reading line that went from philly to bethlehem PA.   The trackage is now owned by SEPTA and is leased to East Penn RR. I figure i could model that or... I grew up in Sussex County NJ and the DL&W had the great Lackawanna cut off that ran from Port Morris NJ to Slateford PA.  as well as the old sussex branch line.  There were other railroads that crossed the county like the Lehigh & New England (LNE), Lehigh & Hudson (L&HR), and the New York Susquhanna and Western(NYS&W).  BTW if you want to read some history about this area, I suggest http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lackawanna_Cutoff , or  http://www.gsmrrclub.org/HISTORY/history5.html  or   http://dlw-sussexbranch.com/  or   http://lhr.railfan.net/home.htm#PAGES      ok ok im getting outta control here...lol.     Neways thank for the support guys.

I'm sorry, you can't model the Reading.....I'm already modeling that.Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]   OK, OK, I'm modeling Pottsville and St Clair, so you can have the rest.

I'm just reading the story of Port Morris in RMC  - some terrific pictures.

Confused [%-)] 19'X9'.....Thats kinda small for HO,  be just right for N scale though, are you planning on a work space down there? or will you be doing the painting\maintenence\kit building upstairs? If the ceiling\floor is high enough the oppurtunity for a multi-level layout presents itself.

Good luck and let us know how it's going.

Like i said that was a guess on the size....  im not too sure.  All I know is that was one of my search criteria when looking for a house..... a basement!   Im thinkin its more like 24x12 if not longer.  Ah well....... again thanks for the support from everyone!

Congrats, man...

Oh, and 19x9 is NOT too small for HO... nice medium size layout IMHO.... Enjoy!

The room in my basement that I am building my layout in is 13 X 21, I am modeling HO and plan to have 2 levels with a helix, so if you think you might like more room, instead just add a level.
