Walthers with the assistance of Northeastern Models and John Keil Line-Products produced all but the Super Dome in the seventies, in O-scale. These 2 rail scale cars were PERFECT-awesome! Absolute-brass quality built up. These kits were based like many of the semi-scratch built style kits of the era, using all white metal and brass parts, with wood base and sub-roof. The skytop was an injected molded part that was painted by the builder. The mold was a perfect 1/4 scale reproduction of the complex window arangements unlike the "too rounded" recent brass versions made through Korea and imported, at that cost they should really work on this, I bought some only because of my love affair with tha cars. They produced the complete Olympian with the Pullman built sleeper skytop, and the Twin Cities Hiawatha cars with the original milw built cars with the wood interiors. The trucks were also dead on as well, Nystrom prototype, that until recently were never produced in HO. I am not an expert on Half O (HO) however the prospeccts of producing a line of Hiawatha-kits, would be a wonderful move forward in that scale or any! These cars were some of the most distinctive designs ever created, may someone work up the molds!
QUOTE: Originally posted by dwick

Good evening, MR Editors:
Passenger cars are almost as numerous as freight cars as far as modeling goes. I would love to see (in plastic) the Milwaukee Road Hiawatha Skytop Lounge tailcars made. I believe there were 3 versions of them. First off , there was the 1955 version, with its orange, maroon and silver. Then orange and silver and finally the Milw/UP yellow scheme. I also would like to see it done in Canadian National colors (who purchased some of them for their needs shortly after AMTRAK took over the passenger systems. These should be done in H.O. and N scale if anyone can afford to start a project this vast. Mold making? Expensive. Yes. To keep costs down, make them kits, not built-ups. Can anyone produce them for under $40 each? I don't know if this is a realistic price or just a model railroad dream. If this can be done, maybe the rest of the Milwaukee Road passenger consists could be introduced at a later time. Are you listening, manufacturers?
Don Wick - West Bend, WI
[:)][:)][:)]
