T-Jack's scratchbuilding challenge- for the daring only!

Nice work everybody! That's the idea, expand out a little and do something to stretch your horizons. Ok, I know, "put up or shut up" yes, yes, yes, here is my entry. I don't scratchbuild much, in fact I think the last thing I did was about 25 years ago. Oh yes, it is fully compliant with the "rules", after all it wouldn't be cool if I were the one that broke them after thinking them up!

It's a pretty standard pattern layout I used, nothing unusual here.


Here's the secret ingredient, I used a paper crimper and ran a 3x5 through it to make a corrugations. I used this to reenforce the interior walls. Not visible in the final photos, but the inside of the structure looks pretty good. It has a depth to the window and door frames.


Ah! Secret ingredient #2, I ran an aluminum can through the crimper to make some realy cool roofing.


Here is the finished product. I believe that with a few more hours of finish work (adding glass and a few signs or something), this will be a most convincing little shack. With the interior walls finished in the corrugated index card, I think I can make a fine interior to this model with a desk and maybe a wood stove. I haven't decided on a permanent location for it yet, but when I do it will be settled into the scenery in the usual manner. Total budget- $0.00





I really had a lot of fun building this thing. I learned a lot of new techniques and got some great ideas from everybody. THANKS! This was fun!

Good, good, now we are starting to see more entries. Looks good everyone. I like the corigated roof. I wanted to use that but didn't have a way of making it. I also like the stove pipe out the side. The open doors also really add to the look.

I didn't get time to paint yesterday. I had to get the basment ready for a new washer and dryer.

Trainfreak - the model is actually meant to be Hunt tower, at Huntingdon, PA. I decided to build it before the challenge was issued - I just included to try and stir up a little bit of interest!

I'm afraid it's not really progressed much this week - just made a start on the roof structure.

Wow! That's very nice! I like the rafters, nice touch!

We can improve the detailing our little buildings(adding a figure or something) and place them on the layout with the kowledge that we built it with our own hands. I think that's pretty awesome!

Thanks for starting this challenge. I really enjoyed it. This is the first building I have ever scratch built, and I think it has given me the confidence to do more. (it is also the first thing that I tried to weather) I can't wait until I have a place on my layout to put it. (unfortunatly my layout still has no ground cover, it looks like one big snow storm with buildings on it!)

prr67, the challenge is technicaly over now, but feel free to scratchbuild something anyway and post your results! My intention of this challenge was to get you guys to do something you might have been thinking about doing, but for whatever reason haven't done it- scratchbuild. Sometimes a little competition is a good way to bring out the creativity inside a person and cause a person to expand and experiment, it's more to prove to yourself that you can do it.

I hope that this will inspire more efforts at scratchbuilding, I know I have a bunch of plans now just waiting....................
