Turntable postion delima
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, April 3, 2001 5:04 PM
I am currently designing a layaout and have decided to add a turntable and engine house (something that I have never had yet). I have tried to find pictures of hoe the turntable and engine house is located in a rail yard, but I can not find one that shows such detail. Where is a good postion for a turntable and engine house?

Well Mr. Digger without knowing anything about your railroad, that is the era, purpose, setting
or even the size, that is a very hard queston to anwser. Generally engine facilitys are located close to the yards, usually opposit the the main ladder. I recommend you get a copy of the track planing books available from Klamaback. I think one is titled something like "track planning for realistic operation" by John Armstong. It describes the basics of prototype operations and
general guildlines that are very helpfull in design your model railroad.

may you have green lights

Thank you for your help. The era is modern in a 8' X 16' layout. I hope this will help you others with your suggestions. Sorry I am kind of new to this hobby. Any tips are welcome.

ok, then forget the turntable, there're pretty rare these days. You can locate your engine house just about anyware you have room. Give it a long lead so you can park your motive power outside to be serviced (and Displayed). Usually you would want it reasonablly close to a yard.
But, do check out the plans of others published in the Model Railroad preeses. They are a great help. And I'm evieous of the space you have available.

Hi Warren
There is another viewpoint and that is that Modelrailroading should be fun. Turntables are not as common as they used to be but they do still exist in operational use. In model form they have the advantage of using animation to concentrate attention on the loco stud. This is one case where you cannot compromise on quality & from personal experience I would suggest you consider Fleischmanns offering, a real state of the art beauty. The turntable enables you to utilise a relatively confined area to display your loco fleet. I suggest you situate the turntable such that it enables your locos to gain ready access to the yard. Consider also making a separate module for the turntable, which will enable you to gain access to the turntable and roundhouse if you have one, for detailing purposes. I got the idea from an article in MR by Bruce Chubb on his "Sunset Limited". I hope this helps. If you need any further suggestions please ask.
Consider also a preserved steam loco for "occasional" fan trips.
All the best.
