0-8-0 Locomotive
Posted by jacon12 on Wednesday, September 7, 2005 3:38 PM
Would a locomotive like the one in the MR magazine ad..

have any problem with #4 turnouts and 18" r. curves in the backwaters of my layout? I learned to just forget trying to negotiate my Class A 2-6-6-4 in those areas.
It looks mighty fine.

Jarrell,

The P2K 0-8-0 should be just fine on the #4. It IS a sweet looking switcher, isn't it? I'd love to get one myself sometime. The new 0-8-0's will be have both decoder and sound installed.

I have this engine also. I have gone ahead and installed the DCC sound decoder. It ran like a champ BEFORE installing the Soundtraxx decoder into it. Now it just runs OK. It seems to have major problems with picking up power from the rails and getting consistent power to the decoder. I have even gone so far as to add electrical pick-up's to the tender. This helped alot, but hasn't made it perfect like it was PRIOR to the DCC conversion.

I hope that when they rre-release this model now with the factoy installed DCC with sound, that they produce better results.

Other than that, it is a beautiful little engine........

I had the same problems with the Soundtraxx PnP decoder and I wholeheartidly agree. I added a wiper to the axels on the tender and this helped a lot!

Lifelike... er.. uh... Walthers.. anyway THE ad in the magazine says that the new one will have electrical pickups on both loco and tender plus traction tires. Maybe this will improve its performance. I see that TrainWorld has the unit, evidently the one that has been on the market awhile, for $259. I wonder what the newer verion in Oct. will be.
Thanks for the input guys.

Jarrell,

I don't know where you got the $259 price. The only P2K 0-8-0 (Item #23302) that I found on the Trainworld site is the older non-sound, non-decoder version for $159.95. If that $259 is a Trainworld item, then it would be the newer 0-8-0. (That's $70 off MSRP.)

Tom, it is in the latest copy of Model Railroader magazine, in the Trainworld advertisement. They list the dc version at $175(I think its the dc version and two lines down is the #315705 dcc with quantum sound for $249.99 (on page 74). But the ad that LifeLike paid for on page 81 says this newer version won't be out til October. So it sounds like the same locomotive with improvements.

Jarrell,

I'm not certain but Trainworld may be advertising the newer 0-8-0 ahead of time so that people can pre-order the loco through them. (Not entirely sure, but it's possible.) A quick phone call or e-mail to Trainworld would clear that up. That's a pretty decent price for it, if that's the case.

The nice thing is that there is an "excuse" for running this engine even if you have a fairly modern layout. USRA 0-8-0 steam locomotives similar to the P2K engine were in regular daily use at Northwestern Steel & Wire in Sterling Illinois (a city served by both the C&NW, now UP, and the Burlington Northern, until about 1981. That is correct, just 25 years ago. The elderly owner of the mill liked steam, many steam engines were sent there to be scrapped and so he had his pick. The day I went I think there were four 0-8-0s under steam, chuffing, blowing their whistles, etc etc
Meanwhile CNW freights pulled by SD40-2s went by. At the interchange a modern diesel would exchange cars with a working 0-8-0.

That's terrific! I wonder if anyone has any pics of them before they were "retired"? (Sadly, probably scrapped instead.)
