Question when did the white roof come into play, and WHY?
Josh, I'm not sure exactly when the white roofs appeared, but their purpose is to keep the cab interior cooler by reflecting the sunlight instead of absorbing it...cheaper than retrofitting every loco with a roof-mounted A/C unit!
First off, I'd like to say, FINALLY, CSX fans. It's good to be here.

Anyway, the white roof was introduced in 2002, and Ken hit the nail on the head as to why.

It's a bummer for me though, I model late 1999/2000. I guess my engineers will have to die of heat exhaustion[8D]
GAH what a dummy I am. [V] It was in 2004, not 2002, that CSX introduced the white roofs. I think I got it mixed up with UP's introduction of the flags in '02. Ahh who knows.

Do any of the rest of you live near a big yard? We have a pretty big CSX yard in our town. That's right, town, not city. The yard has been called the gateway to coal country. Unofficially, that is. Coal trains suck though. We do have at least two or three freights every day, and one or two intermodal/'TOFC trains a week.
