Athearn GP35 CNW
Posted by Todd McWilliam on Friday, June 3, 2005 8:42 AM
I just received my Athearn GP35 in the Chicago Northwestern scheme. What a disappointment. The colors are wrong, I compared it to my Atlas CNW GP40, and I could not get the *** thing on ebay fast enough. My old GP38-2 's from Athearn that I custom painted look better than the GP35 does. Save your money.[:)]

Yeah - Athearn is coming out with a Rock Island one, too - in the wrong phase, of course! Same way they came out with a RI "SW7" (the RI didn't have any!).

There is nothing like good research - and often Athearn does nothing like good research !!!

Well, I sure won't buy any !!!

Hopefully Kato will soon update and re-issue their GP35s someday (and in phase 2 and in RI).

Having said that, I just picked up another Athearn RTR ROCK boxcar - they CAN do good stuff, sometimes !!!

That is funny Todd because I have always thought my Atlas C&NW engines did not look exactly right to me. Well color like beautty is in the eye of the beholder. If you have Athearn, Kato, Atlas, P2K, Life-Like, AHM, Rivarossi, Walthers, Roundhouse and MRC C&NW engines the colors of each might look OK in isolation -- but put them together and not only are no 2 alike, sometimes the same maker changes its mind. But then I go to my old CNW slides and see that from time to time even the railroad itself had subtle changes in what yellow and green meant (and I am well aware of the big changes in color from standard stagecoach to Zito to Traditional - that is not what I am referring to here).
The real thing about the Athearn GP35 is that they did not change the details to match CNW such as putting the "torpedo tubes" on the roof. But I thought it was a decent enough looking model and the shell is way better than the old over-wide Athearn GP35.
Since I have one however I will let someone else bid on E-Bay .....
