July 2005 MR - Dissappointed

As a long time n gauger this is one issue that n gauge is missing. One article on a diesel fleet for the MRL and thats it. No much to spur a n modeller along.
Maybe next issue. Nearly all HO.

You might as well cancel your subscription then, because I can't imagine it getting much better than the July issue. It is one of those rare issues that I’ve read cover to cover and enjoyed every minute.

I'm in N scale also, but I don't seem to have that much a problem figuring that N scale is approximately 50% HO and going from there. Frankly, I think very little of the information presented in MR is dependant on scale anyway.

Oh well... you can't please all of the people all of the time...

I've had a pretty good read too.

Enjoyed every issue so far, since Sep last year.

Most model railroading techniques, whether it is electrical,scenery,benchwork,etc...apply to most scale indifferently. What is specific to scales are the new products advertised and that is pretty well covered by MR,in fact there are way too much advertising. On TV,we have to live with invading advertising but at least TV is,or was, free.I'm not renewing my subscription this year for this reason...got tired of buying advertising.

I dont want to spin this thread off topic, but I no longer watch TV, I get my news from the Net daily, weather within 5 minutes of NOAA in times of storms from the net and free DVD's for movies from the library.

TV is obselete and I think the broadcasters know it.

I do have the Satellite, but that will be retired when Fiber Optic delivers programming and movies to my computer next year. Even Sirus radio is going into our cars. No more AM or FM.

Advertising is a way of life in this world. But not much of it gets thru my world these days.

MR is still my favorite magazine. The ads in it are very useful.

I was quite happy with July MR as there was some interesting articles on different aspects of the hobby namely weathering. I like the ads and I like the product reviews. Yes to some it seems subserviant as it's free advertising for the manufacturers, however it does let us know what's coming down the pipeline and what to expect.

We've been down this road before and as it has been said before MR is only as good as the contributions it recieves.

I thought the issue was ok..there was a couple of good articles that caught my attention...the "weathering techniques" article and the article on building "highway roads" were acceptionally good...chuck

Strange [:)]

I model HO and enjoyed the July MR enormously - PARTICULARLY the N diesel fleet feature (Hey! that's not my gauge... How can I have enjoyed that feature?)

I think this is a great issue. The highways article in particular was very timely for me. I even pre-empted the issue by asking a question here about highway marking techniques about 4 days before my ma showed up. I find the advertising very useful. Not so much the loco ads (I'm not so interested in what may be avaialble in 8 months [:D] ), but the ads from smaller manufacturers of structures and other accessory items are great.

I'm still reading it, but so far, except for the two things I remarked on in other topics, I've enjoyed the issue. I liked the Bay Area Club layout visit, and the article on road modeling looks promising, though I've only scanned the photos. I wi***here was data on older road standards and markings, though - something out of the 1930s to the 1950s, maybe.

I also thought July was one of the better issues I have seen in a while, and my satisfaction with MR has been going down. I'm in N scale, but I tend to not dwell on scales when I read their articles. Other than the mention of a specific commercially available model, the stuff translates well between scales. I even got enjoyment out of Tony K's column, despit the fact that it was somewhat off topic to what I expect in MR.

I thought the article about the layout (in Sweden) where the guy installed a window (complete with mini blinds!) in his living room from which you had a long long view of the layout was something really new. Presumably as useful for N as any other scale. Ditto the weathering article.

Every once in a while MRR puts out a dog. To me this issue was so so. I'm still picking it apart a little to get things out of it. Seems like the issues have been better lately. Realize that not every issue is going to be the greatest to everyone. There is a broad section of people to please. Now if they start putting out 3 or 4 bad issues in a row then maybe I am reading the wrong publication.

I would think the articles on building roads and weathering would be useful to N scalers even though the article used HO models.

I've been going through some old issues of MRR in order to answer some questions that I have in my mind after reading many threads here concerning the following in MRR: "too many huge layouts" "too many ads" "increasing prices" etc etc.

In doing so I found an interesting RPO letter in February 1974. A snippet "In the 12 years I've been interested in our hobby, I'll wager I've learned more (and thus imporved my modeling techniques) from the articles whose subjects were not of special interest to me . . . To sum it up - read it all, guys; you'll be a better modeler for it."

I agree with davekelly, scale doesn't matter much in most cases as to what's in MR. It's all pretty applicable, so what's the beef? Heck, I even buy copies of N Scale magazines now and then if they cover something interesting, even though I model in HO.

It's unrealistic to expect every issue of MR to be of the same high value for you -- I'm surprised to see posts complaining this or that issue just wasn't as useful to me ... c'mon guys! That's normal for any magazine.

Get real! After you've read a magazine for nearly 40 years like me, you end up with favorite issues and ones that are less interesting and a few that hold almost no interest. "Well, now, I'm bored. I shouldn't have to be bored with an issue -- it's a real crime if that happens" ... so grow up, why don't you? Welcome to the real world.

Okay, fine. So you get crossways with MR, throw a hissyfit and stop buying it. Your loss, because the next issue may just be loaded with the things you've been looking for.

After 40 years of reading MR, I still find useful things in almost every issue. And I DO NOT hold them to the impossible standard of pleasing me completely with each and every issue.

I loved the diesel fleet article! It was exactly what I was looking for. I had just been "collecting" locomotives that caught my fancy. Now I see how a realistic fleet can be put together. This has lead me to narrow my locomotive purchases to build my fleet. I model the MRL and Milwaukee Road (anachronism I know, but in my world the NP and Milw merged, and the MRL is operating the MILW pacific extension) in N Scale. What a bonus for me! But even if I modeled another scale or road, that fleet article would sharpen my focus. Great issue.

AAAGH!!! Where is mine already?! Maybe it came today. As I live in the great white north, I do get it delivered by dogsled, which does take some time.
