Train shops in San Antonio?
Posted by NevinW on Tuesday, March 15, 2005 12:13 PM
I am going to San Antonio, Texas in a couple of days for a convention. I was wondering if there were any train shops in that area worth checking out. Thanks - Nevin

I grew up in San Antonio and the last time when i left there, there were not any good ones save the one on Pat Booker Rd. in Universal City but it's closed now...if you can get on IH10 East to Houston (it's about a three hour drive from S.A.) take the 610 Loop South, get on U.S. 59 North and take the Kirby exit...go south on Kirby 2 blocks and take a left on South street and 1/2 block on the left is Papa Ben's Train Place and it's one of the finest MRR hobby shops i've ever seen...Chuck

There are two that advertise in the directory in the back of Model Railroader Magazine. I have no idea how good either one is. In a similar thread recently on another mrr forum, no one jumped up and said that either one was great.

Dibbles Hobbies
1029 Donaldson Ave
(210) 735-7721

Hobby Center
3441 Fredricksburg Rd
(210) 735-4218

Enjoy the trip. San Antonio is a neat place to visit. Don't miss the River Walk.

Regards

Ed

Fredricksburg road is easy to get to...it's pretty much on the north to northwest side of town...take IH 10 North to Loop 410 West and immediately get off on the Fredricksburg exit to the right and turn left onto Fredricksburg road...another way to get there is take IH 10 North and get off on the Fresno street exit, go west on Fresno..it crosses Fredricksburg road you can turn left or right on it...the first hobby shop egmurphy mentioned, I have no idea where it's at..i think it's in Alamo heights off of Broadway street and Somerset, but I'm not sure...
