Trainworld (New York) opinions as a supplier?
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, February 19, 2005 5:54 PM
[?]Has anyone dealt with Trainworld as a supplier of products by mail? They have several advertising pages in Model Railroader every month and appear to be extremely competitive in pricing - but how reliable are they in real life . . . ?
Experiences welcome, as I am thinking of putting in a large order . . . ![:)]

I've dealt with them on several occasions and have always had good results and never heard anything bad about these guys.

I ordered from them today. They ship fast and the products have some of the best prices. The order takers can be New York short.

Bilby2k,

I've only order from Trainworld once but was very satisfied with the service. They had what I wanted, at an extremely low price, and it was in my hands in 4 days.

TW is awesome. Stay away from the one with zebra stripes on the edge of the page (suplus hobby or ???) MR should ban them. Lies lies lies, no ethics. Prices too good to be true are too good to be true. Never heard any good of them. TW is cool tho, order away.

All my dealings with Trainworld have been good. It pays to know what you want if you call the toll free number, otherwise I would call their regular number. Their service is great..

I buy from TW regular and trust them, all items get to UK in one piece and within 7 - 10 days, prices are spot on too,
it's a pity the UK customs rip me off[}:)] import duty for my BLI NW2 was $40,

A BIG THUMBS UP FOR TRAIN WORLD, buy with confidence from these guys

When you put in your order if possible, have all the product/model #s. Everything is by number with these folks. In the event an item is not in stock have a substitute. Be aware if it's not in stock if they
will back order and if there will be additional shipping charges. In most mail order cases if you return an item there's a 15% restocking fee so be absolutely sure it's what you want.
Defective out of the box such as a loco will generally have to be returned to the manufacturer and
repaired/replaced under the manufacturer terms, plus you eat the return shipping expenses.
Mail order firms are not in the repair business.

That's good to know Steve - was considering ordering from them. Is it still cheaper even after HM Customs have taken their share? At the moment I mostly buy from Totally Trains or Mac's Models who seem to vary between full retail pricing and discounts, just wondering how ordering trans-Atlantic measures up price-wise?

I recently ordered two Rivarossi Heislers, one for myself and one for a friend. A little over two weeks delivery to me in Canada, delays caused normally by goods having to go through customs Their US$24.95 postage charge is high, but spead between the two of us it was OK. The actual postage on the package was US$19.95, so price seems fair. The Heislers ended up costing us each about CND$135.00 delviered. (Their list price is US $299.95).

Seeing as a local dealer wants CDN $300.00 (plus $45.00 tax), they were an especially good deal!

I've bought a Proto 1000 RDC-2 and -3 for US $19.95, an RDC-1 for $29.95. They are around CDN $90.00 at LHS.

I look forward to placing more orders with Trainworld and would not hesitate to recommend them.

Good shopping!

I haven't used their mail order service but I've bought from the store a few times. Very nice people and once I goofed on a $150+ purchase and they were nice enough to exchange the stuff w/o a 15% restock fee. This could be different for mailorder as it is clearly stated in their policy.

I like them. IF you call the regular number instead of the tollfree one the people you get are more knowledgeable and laid back, so I call that number even to order. They sent me the wrong thing once, (the packaging was marked wrong,) and they ate all the shipping on that swap.
What could have happened.... did.

Always well packed and the only supplier I have dealt with where I can be sure that the UPS man will be at my door before noon the NEXT day with my order. Excellent in every respect as long as you know what you want.

First thing to do is sign up for e-mail newsletter, there is a special on in the next few days you get 10% off HO scale orders over $100, i think the minimum airmail via USPS is about $25 (£13 in real money) which is not bad at all, don't have surface delivery, everything gets hammered. saw a BLI NW2 loco at Bolton show (C&G models) today for £105, not a bad price when you think the UK tax man bumps the price up by over forty dollars
thats why i look for the special offers

Thanks for the advice Steve, I just signed up for their email newsletters - should be interesting! With £1 being worth nearly $2 these days this could be a very good idea!

My order went off today - with confidence!
It is nice to hear of a supplier who can be relied on for good service AND competitive pricing.
I must get on their email newsletter list ASAP!

I had only ordered from them once, until I placed another order yesterday. I was quite pleased with the service and, of course, the price they charged. I am certain that I will order from them again.

Trainworld is good. Here are some things to be ready for:

o - NYC attitude on some of the order entry folks(not bad, but in a hurry).

o - Order and specify no substitues, that way you are not shipping stuff back...

o - make up your order before calling.

I have had only one dealing with them.In speaking with them I found them to be very rude!.Which was followed up with a nasty letter from the manager.
And I have never delt with them since and never will.

I've ordered twice from Trainworld. Yup, the order takers are somewhat "New Yorkish", but being from NJ I was OK with that. Ordered 6 RDC-1 and the order taker asked what roadnames I wanted - I wasn't expecting that with the price I was getting! Order arrived quickly and was very well packed. Although phoning is somewhat more inconvenient than using the net - given the price point, I determined that it was worth it. I have abosultely no reservations about ordering from them again.

get people to write "returning for repair" on the side of packages when buying from the us! that way you dont get charged duty!

(of course i would never deprive gordon brown of money that is rightfully his!)

I have never been disappointed with trainworld or thier prices! The ony disapointment I've had with them is the lack of knowledge a portion of the staff have. They rely heavily on numbers. If you actually visit, you'll be able to tell who is more knowledgeable. Regardless of people's knowledge they all work to make sure you're satisfied for the most part.

They are usually my first option when looking to purchase a new locomotive or passenger car.
