I just obtained a Bachmann HO Overland 4-8-4, item number 41-0535. Its an old model from around 1990. I need to remove the shell so I can lubricate it, but I can't figure out how to do it. I even have a diagram of the locomotive, but it doesn't help. I did find one screw to remove behind the trailing truck, but something is holding the shell on towards the front.
Welcome. I do not have this loco, but I remember a discussion on this, and I think there is screw under one of the domes.

The Bachmann 4-8-4 line is very similar in every locomotive. If I'm not mistaken, there should be the mounting screw you removed under the trailing truck (or above it technically), and there should also be a small screw on the front of the locomotive behind (again, sort of above) the lead truck. This front screw tends to be small and is usually well hidden. I believe on all of the 4-8-4's these are the only shell mounting screws, but once you take the shell off, there is a plethera of screws in order to open the two part chasis and remove the driver plate should you need to.

I have this exact model and had the shell off a few days ago to repair the smoke unit. Here is how you remove the shell: With the locomotive upside down, turn the draw bar to one side so it's at a right angle to body of the loco. You'll see through the trailing truck frame a screw that holds the draw bar on and behind the draw bar screw (to the rear of the loco) is another slightly bigger screw. Remove the bigger screw, and then right underneath what's normally the right side running board where it steps up just above the valve gear assembly, you should see a small tab that holds the front of the shell in place. You need to gently spread the shell away from the frame at this tab with either a tiny flat head screw driver or a fine dental pick and the shell should lift right off. (Just for the record, I used the tiny flat head screw driver) I hope this helps. Good luck.
That did it! Thank you so much. Once I knew what to do it really wasn't that hard. I took the shell off, added two drops of lubricant, put the shell back on, and now the locomotive runs as smooth as can be.
Be advised. HO Seeker does not allow linking diagrams anymore. You can link the HO Seeker Main page but not a diagram. I have seen this in different forums. I tried contacting the administrator at HO seeker but he will not respond.
