Weekend Photo Fun - November 3rd - 5th
Posted by dti406 on Friday, November 3, 2017 7:00 AM

Good morning from cloudy and rainy Northeast Ohio!

Not much done this week so here are a couple of old pictures at the club that I took!

PC SD40 and SD45 with a general freight!

NYC C430's with a Flexivan Train!

Thanks for looking, and some new cars that will be finished next week!

Rule 1: This is my railroad.

Rule 2: I make the rules.

Rule 3: Illuminating discussion of prototype history, equipment and operating practices is always welcome, but in the event of visitor-perceived anacronisms, detail descrepancies or operating errors, consult RULE 1!

Brrr... Rick, Those mountains are giving me chills to go along with the weather lately. Good modeling weather.

A pic or two from where the last ops session left off in Eureka as the Animas Forks turn finishes it's work.

Back in Silverton, the yard crew's C-25 #375 waits patiently for the next shift, trailing a leased Gorre & Daphetid cabboose.

Rick ... Thanks for opening the thread. Your EMD SD's and Alco C430's look good.

Mike L .... Nice shots of 375 getting a workout.

....

I am continueing to restore buildings and structures from my previeous layout which was 1900 era.

These are a rectangular water tank from a Campbell kit, a scratch built coaling tower, and a scratch built sanding facility.

Another McHugh boxcar painted this week, part of the growing roster. The decals were a bit crumbly and was able to salvage by a shot of clear coat, which was the first I have tried that and was happy with the results. The Atlas Trainman car got a brake wheel door opener and a piece of styrene for the logo on the door.

My favorite thread of the week. I hope we get a lot of participation from everyone.

.

Rick: Thank you for starting us off.

Garry: Thise buildings are definitely worth restoring.

Casey: Love the green switchers and boxcars. In 1954 most everything in reddish brown.

The Turtle Creek Central finally showed up in STRATTON & GILLETTE territory:

Keep the pictures coming! Happy Weekend!

Rick, Thanks for the start-up and views of some really neat mountain railroading.

Garry, Structures like yours are timeless, though the prototypes are disappearing fast in the real world it's great that they can live on thru model railroads.

Forgot how much fun it is to weather a freight car.  Not confident in my skills I chose an older less detailed Athearn model to practice on.  Pretty much followed Gary Christensen's methods and color choices with brushed on acrylic craft paint washes, pastel chalks and artist oil paints.  Only used my airbrush to apply Dullcote and that could be accomplished with a spray bomb.

Thanks to all and regards,  Peter

Peter,

.

That is what I would call a darned good job of weathering. It looks very much like the real thing.

Great Contributions, Everyone!

Thanks for the startup of another fine WPF, Rick!

I decided to get away from the workbench and make some progress on the layout itself. One of the features you first see when visiting the layout is this boat dock (Great Lakes ships are called "boats") and the four Hulett ore unloaders.

 IMG_7442_fix by Edmund, on Flickr

Well, none of the track under these Huletts has been painted or ballasted, nor has the single-track main running behind them.

That was my target for this weekend!

 IMG_0237_fix by Edmund, on Flickr

Perhaps I'll get a preliminary coat of grimy black on the Huletts themselves. Then I need to figure out how to string some LED lighting on them. Confused

Then, maybe when the snow flies I'll make some progress on the ore boat Whistling

On to more Great Stuff, Folks!

Regards, Ed

Terry, Kevin, Peter .... Thanks very much for your comments about my structures.

Casey ... Your boxcars and switchers look great.

Kevin ... I like your TCC boxcars.

Peter ... Your weathered boxcar looks real.

Ed .... Those Hulett machines are massive. I'm impressed!

A great start to WPF again this week guys. Keep them coming.

Terry-the old buildings are works of art. Hope you will be able to "recycle" them on your current layout.

Ed-the Hulett machines are imposing. Great work on their construction.

From the BRVRR. An old photo from an operating session:

Santa Fe E-8A/B at the head of our 9-car passenger consist, west bound on the BRVRR layout.

Keep the photos and ideas coming everyone. Thanks to you WPF is always the best thread of the week.

I agree... and the sounds they made! Like a dinosaur with asthma!

Skip to the last few minutes for night scenes.

Those things are SO massive, it is had to relate to the size. One thing areund 7:30 where they are lowering a Payloader into the hold, shows how big the jaws are. The Payloader looks almost toy like

Kevin and Garry, Thanks for the nice words about the S.P. Hy-cube.

Ed, The movie about those gargantuan Hulett loaders was great.  Now I know why you've got skip-loaders on the ore boat deck.

Thanks and regards,  Peter

Renegade1c,

Sweet.  Nice progress on the layout.  Is that Front Range as in Joint Line?

I'm a D&RGW fan who started out interested in the late 80's - early 90's period, but just can't countenence trains without cabooses and want the RGZ to be part of the mix, so I've back dated about 10 years so I could have cabooses, RGZ, 40 TOFC trains, lots of colorful per diem box cars and fallen flag cars were common from NP, GN, CB&Q, NYC, PRR etc.

I expect you being from Golden, you'll need to have lots of PC&F beer cars from Eel River and ExactRail!  They were usually at the head end of hot shots heading west up the Front Range.

The Colorado Front Range Railroad (my version anyway) is a fictional joint venture between the BN and Rio Grande set in the '80s to do the local traffic in the Denver Metro area, more specifically the Beer line out to Golden, which then interchanges with Rio Grande/ BN at North Yard/36th street Yard. Since the beer line is actually BN trackage, I needed a way to justify running Rio Grande equipment on it. I will also have some BN locos and some CFRR equipment as well. See below.

20170408_143813

In this case I have the beer line out to Golden as the primary focus of the layout with a short segment of the "Main line" which goes North and South which allows me to also serve what was the Conoco (now Suncor) refinery. The upper deck of the center peninsula of the layout is dedicated to the Coors Brewery. I grew up around Golden so I would like to model a significant portion of the brewery. Most of what I skipped out on in the Brewery on the layout was the large classification yards they have. I focused more on the actual brewing complex and its rail traffic.

So all in all, I can run DRGW, BN, UP and my own custom painted equipment on the layout without issue.

My previous photos are of the Gunderson Railcar services (I added crane, creative license) right by McIntyre Ave. just east of Golden about 5 miles. Just beyond that is International Paper and Ball Can Manufacturing. My building flat is of International Paper (added the holding tanks, again creative license, to allow for some tank traffic from refinery).

I plan on having operations on the layout so I need to have some products go to other parts of the layout and not just to/from yard.

The Foamcore board mock up is a place holder for the Jolly Rancher plant. It was about 2 blocks from where I went to middle school before it got bought by Hershey and shut down. We could smell what flavor they were producing each day. I had to have that industry on the layout. that and the Keebler cookie factory (which was right next door to North Yard)
