The Colorado Front Range Railroad (my version anyway) is a fictional joint venture between the BN and Rio Grande set in the '80s to do the local traffic in the Denver Metro area, more specifically the Beer line out to Golden, which then interchanges with Rio Grande/ BN at North Yard/36th street Yard. Since the beer line is actually BN trackage, I needed a way to justify running Rio Grande equipment on it. I will also have some BN locos and some CFRR equipment as well. See below.
In this case I have the beer line out to Golden as the primary focus of the layout with a short segment of the "Main line" which goes North and South which allows me to also serve what was the Conoco (now Suncor) refinery. The upper deck of the center peninsula of the layout is dedicated to the Coors Brewery. I grew up around Golden so I would like to model a significant portion of the brewery. Most of what I skipped out on in the Brewery on the layout was the large classification yards they have. I focused more on the actual brewing complex and its rail traffic.
So all in all, I can run DRGW, BN, UP and my own custom painted equipment on the layout without issue.
My previous photos are of the Gunderson Railcar services (I added crane, creative license) right by McIntyre Ave. just east of Golden about 5 miles. Just beyond that is International Paper and Ball Can Manufacturing. My building flat is of International Paper (added the holding tanks, again creative license, to allow for some tank traffic from refinery).
I plan on having operations on the layout so I need to have some products go to other parts of the layout and not just to/from yard.
The Foamcore board mock up is a place holder for the Jolly Rancher plant. It was about 2 blocks from where I went to middle school before it got bought by Hershey and shut down. We could smell what flavor they were producing each day. I had to have that industry on the layout. that and the Keebler cookie factory (which was right next door to North Yard)

I decided to get away from the workbench and make some progress on the layout itself. One of the features you first see when visiting the layout is this boat dock (Great Lakes ships are called "boats") and the four Hulett ore unloaders.

Well, none of the track under these Huletts has been painted or ballasted, nor has the single-track main running behind them.

Garry, Structures like yours are timeless, though the prototypes are disappearing fast in the real world it's great that they can live on thru model railroads.
Forgot how much fun it is to weather a freight car. Not confident in my skills I chose an older less detailed Athearn model to practice on. Pretty much followed Gary Christensen's methods and color choices with brushed on acrylic craft paint washes, pastel chalks and artist oil paints. Only used my airbrush to apply Dullcote and that could be accomplished with a spray bomb.

Another McHugh boxcar painted this week, part of the growing roster. The decals were a bit crumbly and was able to salvage by a shot of clear coat, which was the first I have tried that and was happy with the results. The Atlas Trainman car got a brake wheel door opener and a piece of styrene for the logo on the door.

I am continueing to restore buildings and structures from my previeous layout which was 1900 era.
These are a rectangular water tank from a Campbell kit, a scratch built coaling tower, and a scratch built sanding facility.
Brrr... Rick, Those mountains are giving me chills to go along with the weather lately. Good modeling weather.
