Ed.. it’s been a lot of years , but I remember seeing three tri-level railcars on the CN that had been in a derailment . The tri-levels had been derailed and hauled to a terminal . I could see no damage on either the railcars or the new automobiles.  All 45 new automobiles were to be scrapped.

Give Ken some of the "Special Reserve-aged 4 months"

We had baby-backed ribs last night, (small deer) very good with BB-Q sauce, grilled over mesquete chunks I brought back from my older brother's house in Texas.

Here on the Island we call bike riders "Organ Donors". As a boy with a 306 pound Schwinn with baloon tires, it was easy to pull onto the soft shoulder to let a vehicle pass, not so much with the narrow tires on todays bikes. The off road bikes today are near to what I used to ride, and only weigh about 1/3 of the bikes in the 40s. and early 50s.  Our roads, other than being covered with asphault, are no wider than when they were cut in the 1700s--and it goes without saying that the only time a bike rider is overtaken is always on a blind corner.

The person who comes up with a "seat extractor tool" (from the pucker factor) will become quite wealthy I should think.

Good Afternoon!

November 30th! I am just glad this month will be over in a few hours. As I said earlier, November is not my month! I have put up a little Christmas tree next to me on my desk and I will light it up for the first time tomorrow. Nothing fancy, just one of those cheap & ready to use artificial contraptions faintly resembling a tree, but with hopes attached to it, that the warm glow of the lights will make me feel better. This will be our only Chrismas decoration, as neither Petra nor I feel well enough to work our way through all the stuff in the attic to retrieve the 1/2 ton of ornaments and decorations we have stowed away up there.

Jan - organ donor, that´s exactly what I call motor bike riders. They account for a high number of tjhe people getting killed in traffic in recent years, only surpassed now by young folks not paying attention to traffic while texting.

Anyone volunteering to facilitate the Diner move to the December 2017 location?

See you all next month!

First, thanks for all of the well wishes after my accident. This is a good community to be a part of. (Sorry. I left my participle dangling.)

An update or two on the bike accident. I made it through the day after without too much pain. The doctor has me taking Aleve on a regular schedule, regardless of whether or not I think I need it. She told me, "trust me, you need it." Other than the soreness, there is no real damage to me or to the bike. I will need to replace the rear tire as I scrubbed off all of the rubber in the skid.

Within four hours of the accident her insurance called, discussed the accident, and offered a settlement. It was fair and even included compensation for a missed piano lesson--their idea, not mine--and I took it. I should have the check by the end of the week. My smart-aleck son asked me if other people's insurance was part of my retirement financial plan. (And, yes, this is the son I will be working for come January.)

On the Toronto local news tonight there was a segment on bike riders getting 'doored', i.e. when a driver or passenger opens a door directly in front of a passing cyclist.

I have read that the best defense if a driver opens a door in front of you while riding is to aim for the driver. Their bodies are better at absorbing the impact than the door. Wink

Fortunately, Toronto City Council is very 'pro bike' so they are considering enacting local bylaws that will make said 'dooring' occurances a more serious offense.

The greater Phoenix area is also very bike friendly. Most of the secondary roads have dedicated bike lanes that are around 5 feet wide. These bike lanes are defined as a traffic lane giving the bicyclist the right-of-way when approaching an intersection. This means the driver in my case was at fault for not yielding the right-of-way.

Richard You are making riding motorcycle's seem safe! I have over 150,000 on bikes and I have been down twices in 30 years. One all most does not count because I was on a dirt bike in the front yard and hit some wet grass.

I have logged over 110,000 miles and nearly 7,000 hours on bikes (the pedaling variety) over the past 25 years. During this time, I have had five interactions with cars. However, one was entirely my fault when I ran into the back of a parked SUV a couple of years back. Honestly, given the amount of time spent on the bike, that's really not that many. The result of the riding is that I have low blood pressure (an hour after the accident it was only 117/75, it is usually quite a bit lower) and a resting heart rate of 45-55 BPM. Add in the endorphines and the positives outweigh the negatives.

Sir Madog
Anyone volunteering to facilitate the Diner move to the December 2017 location?

Well,

I've never done it before but I suppose I could give 'er a go.

Anyone have a suggestion for the location?

If nothing else surfaces I'm kind of leaning toward Loughborough, Charnwood borough, Leistershire, England.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loughborough

Lots of interesting sights to see here especially the Great Central Railway which will be hosting some special Holiday runs:

http://www.gcrailway.co.uk/special-events/christmas-holiday-trains-from-26th-december/

From December 26th to January 2nd, ride on our Christmas Holiday & New Year Trains and steam away those winter blues...

They will even open the griddle car for us:

Our Griddle Car service with its all day breakfasts and other hot food is scheduled to be on the services departing Loughborough at: 1015, 1215, 1415 returning from Leicester at: 1105, 1305, 1505
On Boxing Day, the Griddle will also operate; this will be on all trains except for the 1315 from Loughborough, returning from Leicester at 1405.

Any other suggestions?

Regards, Ed

 Afternoon Diners

Flo, Ed, Brent, Henery, Inch, Brent, Galaxy, Gary, Jan, Rob, Angelob, UP 831, Richard, Ulrich and I will have a Beer please.

 Foul Mood tonight.

Train Hate My Guts Tonight! Even the Mighty CB&Q F7's are picking turnouts that for all most a year they have been fine with. Sigh

Made my first payment to PFC. It is a personal loan and had to call in the payment, could not get on there web site for some reason? Seems they charge $1.50 to make a payment either at the website or over the phone? Now that make me mad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Angry I think it is wrong to charge me extra to pay my bill on time! Yes, I can mail them a check, but I pay all of my other bills on line with a extra cost!

Ed How about the old Washington Ind or East St Louis B&O yards? Or even the St Louis UP yard?

 Later, Ken
