Feeling Lonely.. Any Modelers in my Area?
Posted by JamesNWR05 on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 12:18 PM

I've been hoping to find someone near me who is also interested in trains and model railroading. The closest club is 2 hrs away...if you're in the SC area, shoot me a PM. Thanks!

This is one reason why the NMRA exists and has Divisions.

It's surprising how many model railroaders there are lurking around, they just never open up to let folks know.  I know, I was for a long time.  Now I have found a number of people within a few miles, even in my small VT town.

One thing I have thought of, but never have done, is to make up some cards (index card with my name, address and phone number, maybe scale) and leave them at your LHS (hopefully you have one).  If you are nervous about leaving your address, just a first name and phone number can make contact.  Doubt many crank callers go to hobby shops looking for targets. This way you are not violating a confidentality issue, as you are not asking for names, you're leaving yours.  The store owner can give the cards to his customers that purchase model railroading items and if they are interested, they can contact you.

Though none of the folks nearby operate with me, we do chat and share ideas when we see each other.  Some have operating layouts, others just would like to, just  haven't gotten going.

Good luck,

Richard

Me too! There were once a core group of around 15 modelers who came over to play once a week and often more. Several have passed, some have moved, and others just got out of the hobby. I still sponsor open houses and friends I know in the hobby do assist, but the regulars are gone. I don't think it is me as I bathe every Saturday evening, refrain from talking politics, always have the ice box stocked, and offer advice to all who ask. If I don't know the answer, I usually make stuff up.

Anyone in central Maryland who is a serious model rail or an aspiring model rail feel free to come over. The layout is club sized and would welcome most anyone who wants to run trains and assist in maintenance. Pike runs on DCC and has 23 scale miles of mainline track. I'm not into prototype operation, but totally enjoy building, sharing, and just running trains.

Howard,

What a nice offer! I've always admired your layout and modeling skills. Many years ago you purchased an item from me on eBay and I felt honored. If I wasn't 2000 miles away, I'd be knocking on your door.

This brings up a point. I know there are modelers in my area but I am not really interested in meeting anyone. If I run into a problem, I ask my father in law. Story behind this is, we used to have a club in town. Have no idea if it is still there. I was about 12 and a friend and I went to their open house. I asked about joining. Dues were 10 bucks. No big deal, I had a paper route and that was nothing to me. Anyway, this one guy starts running his mouth about kids and screwing everything up, you won`t be able to pay. Guy just wouldn`t shut up. Others were trying to talk to us about joining and I just pointed to Mr big mouth and said, I don`t think so. So some opinionated a** cost them two memberships of two people that wanted to learn all they could. Hope you have success in finding people.

I'm in the Hendersonville NC area. 30 min drive north is close enough for model railroading. PM me for a visit.

Then you reside close to Beaufort,SC . Savannah,Ga is about 45 minutes from Beaufort,SC .

Try getting ahold of someone from Beaufort Railroaders. If not them Savannah has a model railroad club worth looking into.

I like the comment on the NMRA Regions and Divisions. That is only useful if people in your area are members of the NMRA. If you live in the hinterland of numerous Regions, it really offers you nothing. Via the map, I would be a member of the PNR, but everything that happens in the division I would be in is 10 hours away in the Spokane area. It is only 6 hours east to get to Fargo, ND in the Thousand Lakes Region. The closest would be the Northern WY division in the RMR and it is still 3 hours away.

I have been lucky enough to meet a few people here that are into model railroading via different online forums.

Try reaching out to the head of your local TCA division (Train Collector's Association) division.  Although the TCA's focus is on collecting vintage equipment, he/she might know a few members who are modelers/operators as well (like me; I'm in northern NJ for anyone who's interested).  Find your division at traincollectors.org.
