A bit frustrated here.
Over the years, like a number of modelers here trying to help others, I've sometimes posted links to other threads on this forum that contains the detailed information that a poster is seeking.
For the past 6 months it has been hit or miss for me! Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt! Just now I tried to help CJTrainGuy with a couple of links regarding metalizing with Alclad2. The links arent' working. Is it me or this forum's software?
This is how I've been proceeding:
1. I tab open a new window.
2. Look for the specific past thread.
3. After finding that thread, I go up to its URL bar, highlight the thread and hit Control C.
4. I tab back over to the current thread, write a "Reply" comment, and below it hit "Control V", and the thread's URL is pasted on.
5. Next, I highlight that newly pasted thread's URL, click open the "Insert/Edit" link icon and paste that thread's URL into the blank URL box.
6. I then click the "Target" drop down menu and select "Open in New Window". I do, and the link turns blue, and is now underlined. All looks good.
7. Hit update Thread. I test it and..................
Again, as I stated, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Any tips or info would certainly be appreciated.

The last forum upgrade a couple years ago was not very good.
The icon rarely works so I do it manually like we use to have to do in the past. Works every time.

Ever since the last upgrade it's been hit-or-miss with either posting clickable links or using the "Add Quote to your Post" feature. When it doesn't work I use the bracketed method that Rich outlined above for links. For quotes I use a similar bracketed code:
(quote user="forum name")...message...(/quote)
All you have to do is replace the parentheses for brackets, paste the forum member's forum name inside the quotation marks, and paste the quoted message that you want to reference to in between. If posted properly it will look like this:
forum name...message...
If you comment to it be sure that your comments are posted after the [/quote].

As a teen would say: Rich, Tom both of you are "Bosses!" I went back over to the "Help with metal finish on Amtrak car" thread, applied the brackets to those links, and "Voila!" the links are working. I'll use that much simpler method from now on.

First you write the text that you want to click on, such as BroadwayLION.
Highlight that text and click the link Icon, and paste the URL in there.
But if you wish to refrence to THIS FORUM, it will not work.

Mostly miss, some web browsers, like IE, do not even show the link icon. I feel lucky to get smilies

You're correct about linking to anything on this forum, Lion, but it is hit 'n miss with other sites. Today the link icon method actually works properly. Later on today?...or, next week? - that's another story.
Microsoft is getting rid og Internet Explorer, their new entry is Microsoft Edge, it has a 100% different engine in it.
Apparently it must be a simple and valid URL with no unrecognized extensions.

Windows convinced me to switch to Firefox browser many years ago. The Add-On's stop a lot of Pop Ups and Videos.
I know many who have done the same.

You got me, Rich. Forum-to-forum links work when you do what you just did using the actual URL as the link. Not so if you link the address with a word or words - e.g. using the Insert/edit link icon.

I've never been a real fan of IE so I've been using Firefox (since release V3.x) for the same reasons you've mentioned, Rich. The newer Microsoft Edge is okay and has some pluses. I mainly use it for quick news updates but primarily use Firefox for browsing the internet.

I notice that when you click on the Insert/Edit Link, it does not add the URL before and after the link. So, I tried to insert it manually, but it didn't work. Dunno, this forum software leaves a lot to be desired.
