The latest project layout had me wondering about past project layouts and where they end up. Some have been prizes, some are in private hands, some may be in the dumpster, I don't know. Specifically, does anybody know where the O'Dell County Traction Company layout from 11/88 to 4/89 ended up? Always wanted to know. Also curious about some of the others like the Joplin & Southern, Gold Hill Central, Burlington Northern from 1990, etc.

yes, we went to trainfest in Nov and took the MR /kalmbach tour and seen 2 of them that we were interested in the "red oak" & "the salt lake" . by the way its a great tour and we got to meet most the staff ,Steve Otte was our tour guide. we took 2 Amtrak trains to get to Milwaukee from so Calif ,the "coast starlite" the "empire builder" there and 3 the "Hiawatha " & the "cal zephyr" an "San Joaquin" home. It was a train polooza over ten days...Jerr
While we're on the subject of project layouts, I'd like to suggest for the next project layout that MR do the San Jacinto by Andy Sperandeo. And once completed donate it to the NMRA for the museum as a tribute to Andy. That's probably one of the best designed for operation small layouts and has been a favorite of discussion on here for years.

Some of the project railroads you name were, I think, built for MR by individuals who authored the articles. Presumably they retain ownership of the finished layout, or do with it what they want. But yes at least several of the more recent project layouts actually built by MR staffers at the Kalmbach building are retained and I recall from tours that they get tucked here and there where there is some room for them. Others I am sure were dismantled . The wonderful Clinchfield project layout was I think one of the prizes in the MR sweepstakes years ago.

I'll second that thought. That's a great modest size layout with lots of potential, and if you want to change the location slightly, you can change names and put an SP Common Standard where Perris is. An M-6 Mogul or a C-9 Consolidation for power would work great. When I first got into model railroading, the layout that really inspired me was the Yule Central ( anyone remember that one? ). IIRC correctly, it was given away in a drawing contest by Model Railroader. I didn't win and I was heart broken! I went on to build my first layout based on it and someday when I retire, I would like to build a modern version of it. I also was impressed by the Alkali Central and would like to know what happened to it.
