I have some recollection that there were some issues with this locomotive when it was first issued by BLI - and how easy those issues were to resolve I do not recall either.  It sounds like this particular seller does not really know what he has.  It is certainly a handsome locomotive.  I do not recall it coming in this TH&B paint scheme when new.

Thanks Dave. Yes it does look like the seller is not sure what they have as the price seem low for a BLI steamer.  I bid on it but I did also notice the engine seem to be are litte rough up,  I am just wondering if it a lemon in disguise.

It may be one of those sellers that start low and gets a lot of bidders and eventually gets a reasonable price that makes him money. I know one seller that starts bid items @ 99 cents and they all get up to $100 on Athearn and Walthers diesels.

Keep in mind that if you live in the US it will cost you some extra postage coming across the border from Canada.

It may be just fine.

It also may not even run at all.

Seller appears to have expertise in antiques and collectables, not model trains. (Based on seller name and recent history.)

Seller stated he has no way of testing, also does not know how to disassemble. (Possible issue here with shipping. All my BLI steamers the tender did not fit inside box while connected....)

Therefore, bid accordingly. (Carefully. Not more than you are willing to lose if it needs major repairs to run....)

Your call, but certainly a buyer beware here.

(Again, it might be a great deal. Might be perfectly fine. Might be DOA. No way to know for sure which here.)

The Toronto, Hamilton & Buffalo was co-owned by the CPR and the NYC, and it had both Berkshire 2-8-4 locomotives and a couple of NYC Hudsons, 501 and 502.  In their first Paragon series in the 2002/3 time-frame, BLI produced both Hudsons.

There was no problem with mine, 501, and about the only complaint at the time applied to all QSI-equipped BLI steamers; MTH had just threatened suit for the first of many times.  They felt QSI had infringed on MTH's BEMF control patent, so the BLI steamers shipped during the next two years had QSI's BEMF control disabled.  That meant rapid starts, sometimes jerky ones on what DCC enthusiasts have since come to appreciate as smoothly accelerating locomotives.

Good rule of thumb......do not post links to ebay items you are bidding on.....you just quintupled the amount of people interested....and are going to drive up the price. Next time try for a snipe....and keep it to yourself.

Hi,

Given the seller's feedback, I would say he is legitimate and likely has no real MR knowledge and is looking for a quick sale.   In fact, if it was ATSF, I would bid on it myself.  If anything would hold me back, its the fact it would have to go through customs (Canada to USA) and might be messed with in the process.

ENJOY  !

Mheetu:

How good are you at tuning steam engines?

The price is good but given the warnings posted about how well the locomotive actually runs, I would suggest that you should be prepared to do a lot of work on it. Could be a great learning exercise!

I bought my BLI Hudson new a dozen years ago for $250.  Were I to sell it today (which I wouldn't), I would start the bidding at $125.  But I could guarantee the bidders that the loco is undamaged, and in perfect running condition.

Unfortunately, in this case, the seller cannot make any such guarantee.  So, I would pass on this as a potential bidder.

Thanks guys for the reply.  Well it gone now beyond what i want to pay for it as it has so many problems including the back knuckle coupler looks broken.  With the weak Canadian dollar I might be better off just going to the local brick and mortar store and pick up the one they have which is a paragon 2 version

Just because the bidding starts out at $ 9.95 does not mean there is something with it. The seller is just taking a risk trying to attract more bidding and higher final price. The risk is that the final price may be low and he will lose money. But IMHO BLI stuff usually attracts a lot bidders.

If it was a buy it now for 9.95 then you should be worried.

I've got a BLI Hudson with sound that I paid about $120 for from Trainworld.some years ago.  It still runs fine.

It seems that some have great luck on Ebay and others chase dreams.  I tend to avoid that site since I prefer seeing the item first-hand.  The other issue is while the cost might be low, the shipping costs could boost the price higher than expected.  Perhaps there are estate sales posted there, but Ebay strikes me as a trap for the must-haves or those wanting to find a piece of nostalgia.

That may be, but as both a buyer and a seller on eBay, I contend that an informed buyer who understands the nuances of eBay will almost inevitably have a positive experience.

You got to do the math when bidding. Also you need to watch a lot of  things before you win something in some cases, also you can set up notifications. The real secret is to read carefully what is written and ask questions if you don't understand. Just bought a bunch of hoppers and the shipping per was high but in the sellers fine print I found out he only charges that for the first item, others were $2 each, on another deal I only paid shipping on the first item, all others shipped free!
